Xmas Grin Living without heating for as long as possible and I've been looking for ways to keep warm. I can highly recommend wool socks. My feet are now toasty which is fab.

Ooh, lovely! Any you'd particularly recommend?

Tayegete · 02/12/2022 18:26

I agree, I bought a 5 pack of mens woollen socks a couple of years ago and they are amazing! So warm and comfortable.

TruestRepairman · 02/12/2022 18:40

I love them! Sheep know what they're doing.

I love this comment Grin

A friend knitted me some house socks during lockdown - I adore them.

TeaAndJaffacakes · 02/12/2022 18:42

Sheepskin lined boots :)

splatfrog · 03/12/2022 08:07

@TriciaMcMillan 'Pachamama' hand-knit. Super thick and long. And right now, priced £10 cheaper at my local garden centre than online..

Do you recommend any particular makes? @TeaAndJaffacakes

They look great! Don't know about anyone else, but if my feet are cold, I'm cold!!

Beanbagtrap · 03/12/2022 08:10

Do they not itch? I just remember itching all the time when forced to wear wool as a child.

splatfrog · 03/12/2022 08:11

@Beanbagtrap I wear these over my regular socks/jeans as a 2nd layer, so no itching.

They look gorgeous, I am always envious of anyone that can wear wool, even with a cotton layer underneath I find it unbearably itchy.

Teaandscone · 03/12/2022 08:15

I sympathise; I’ve been very grateful for my Shetland wool jumpers this week!

splatfrog · 03/12/2022 08:19

I think some wool is particularly 'hairy' & itches @EspeciallyD I think Pachamama wool must come from a different kind of sheep because it's quite thick but not wirey and doesn't itch.

I couldn't wear anything woolen as a child. I discovered merino wool socks a couple of years ago and managed to train myself to bear them, I've now moved up to merino tights too, they're a life saver at the moment.

user175438765 · 03/12/2022 08:24

Also wool, especially if you are wearing it as an outer garment as you are with your socks underneath needs very little washing. Your socks look lovely.

Benjispruce4 · 03/12/2022 08:27

I bought some thermal socks online for my DD who was cold in the north east at uni a few years ago. She always feels the cold but she said they were transformative so I bought some. They are my slippers.

CloudJam · 03/12/2022 08:28

Oh @splatfrog I wish I hadn't opened your thread! Just had a look on their website and I want all of it. Especially the puffin things. And the rainbow things. And the sheep things. It all looks so cosy.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/12/2022 08:29

I have Smartwool walking socks that I’ve started wearing around the house in the day.

absolutely not itchy or scratchy and definitely warmer than my usual cotton socks

lightlypoached · 03/12/2022 08:30

Alpaca socks are the business. Soft, warm and non itchy.

The other brilliant thing about wool socks is they don't need to be washed at every wear. that sounds yucky but the lanolin in them kills bacteria and smells so they can be worn without being scuzzy for a few days. I know that sounds nasty but it really isn't.

WellTidy · 03/12/2022 08:32

For anyone wanting thermal (but not wool) socks at a cheaper price, I buy the 3 pack of boys thermal navy school socks in M&S in size 4-7 and they’re lovely and warm. I wear them every day. I think they do them in black and grey too. About £7-8.

Rubytoos · 03/12/2022 08:32

Woollen clothes are always warmer than synthetics. Different types of wool are softer, but may be more expensive. If you have a base layer on it doesn’t really matter, but I only like to wear merino or cashmere next to my skin. I lived in the Andes for a few years, they use alpaca wool as no sheep. It’s seven times warmer than sheep wool as it has hollow fibres that trap the warm air. Baby alpaca wool was soft enough to wear next to skin.

Nat6999 · 03/12/2022 08:46

I wear Heatholders socks, they are like a duvet for my feet, 2.3 tog.

Mirabai · 03/12/2022 08:52

Now you need some sheepskin slippers and you will be toasty.

BarrelOfOtters · 03/12/2022 08:59

Sheepskin slippers are the best. And merino next to the skin.

Bluevelvetsofa · 03/12/2022 09:18

I’m currently wearing thick tights, fleece leggings and Nordic socks. They often have a promotion and they come in packs of five. They aren’t itchy, I don’t think.
