FRIENDS - Monica and Richard ❤️

Watching this, for the millionth time. Because it's great. Obviously. I'm on series 3 and Monica and Richard have just broken up... and it bloody well guts me everytime. He is the PERFECT man. Someone of his character is literally the only one who could pull me out of single life. Strong, stable, funny and genuine. Just a lovely man.

Yes he knew her as a child but I don't think he "watched her grow up" or was very familiar with her, same as I don't really know some of my friends kids. He didn't even recognise her when they met up years later but saw her for what she was - a 26 year old woman.

He was much better for her than man baby Chandler. Richard was an equal partner, she didn't have to "tutor" him. Shame they wanted different things in the end.

Oh and also she was absolutely stunning in series 2, best she ever looked.

I know, I know and the answer is no - I have nothing better to do right now! So thought I'd start a thread on my favourite TV show 😃

FFS title should say Richard not Chandler! Have requested it.

I had/have a HUGE crush on Chandler but yeah even I think Richard was better for Monica - however, she really wanted kids and obviously that was the deal breaker.

lemmein · 02/12/2022 17:49

Nah, Richard was ok till they broke up. When they bumped into each other in the video store he took her back to his, shagged her, told her nothings changed, then went on a date 🤨

AND he had a collection of homemade porn videos with previous girlfriends!!

I'm on Team Bada-Bing 😎

What was the age difference? And I say that as someone with a dh 15yo than me! I get it shouldn’t matter but they were at such different stages in their lives they never seemed very compatible to me.

FuckConvoGiveMeAForest · 02/12/2022 17:54

She was 26 he was 48. Don't see the issue to be honest, but then I love an older man and don't want children at all.

She was 26 and he was 52, literally twice her age. Regardless of how he was painted as a nice character it was uncomfortable and creepy as fuck.

codehelp · 02/12/2022 18:06

Yeah, I'll bite, I thought he was a creepy older mismatch and your title was dead right! Grin

Kanaloa · 02/12/2022 18:25

I preferred literally any of her other boyfriends - I liked Pete and loved Chandler. I always remember Rachel telling the story of falling off her bike and Richard coming to pick her up and kiss her. 🤢 He has a daughter who went to high school with Monica!

I mean do you really not see the issue? Maybe imagine you did have children. And one day your husband has a few friends round with their kids, and one of them is sitting next to his little girl and your little 6 year old girl… who he will have sex with in 20 years.

MarieTharp · 02/12/2022 18:33

The age difference was creepy. And would have been even worse when Monica hit 40.

DillDanding · 02/12/2022 18:35

When I watched it as a young person, I thought this relationship was very creepy. Mostly because of the huge age gap and his moustache.

KitchenFleur · 02/12/2022 18:38

I could never get to grips with the age difference. As much as I like Tom Selleck, Monica and Richard made be cringe. Major ick.

DillDanding · 02/12/2022 19:18

I am watching an episode now where Rachel is having a fling with Bruce Willis. That was almost more revolting than Tom Selleck.

Agreed. It only barely passed the sniff test even in the mid 90s.

pictish · 02/12/2022 20:27

Nope nope nope. He was too old and had known her in the capacity of his friend’s child from an early age. Yuck.

dayswithaY · 02/12/2022 20:32

No, it was wrong. Richard was a long standing friend of Monica’s Dad - they played golf together. Would you date your Dad’s friend?

Monica was friends with Richard’s daughter who was the same age.

Richard told Monica he had only ever slept with one woman before her - his ex-wife. He was never going to commit to Monica.

Then Monica snogged Richard’s son!

Wrong on every level. Even in 1996.

FuckConvoGiveMeAForest · 02/12/2022 20:44

He was totally committed to her! Plus if he'd only slept with two women, both of whom he was in love with, he's hardly a player. Team Dreamboat Richard! 💕

I think it helped a little that Courtney Cox actually was 31 (although I think Selleck was in fact 50). But yeah, the whole thing was creepy. I mean hadn’t Richard served in Vietnam for crying out loud!

Alopeciabop · 02/12/2022 21:10

Ugh the age gap thing gets so boring. There’s literally no issue with it. It is however creepy that he knew her as a kid. And also later, I believe, her dad calls Richard his best friend. Which means he MUST have known her as a kid reasonably well and also must have kept up (even vaguely) with her progress as she grew up and moved away because of her father.

pushing that aside, yes, he was amazing. And chandler was a dweeb. BUT then after they got married Chandler totally blossomed and by the end of the show he was totally responsible and mature and thoughtful and kind.

so you should be over Richard by the time you get to season 10 OP. I go through this every time too. Especially when he mentions pig sex.

ps well done on the fabulous taste in television

ChicagoBears · 02/12/2022 21:12

Team Richard all the way!

Kiss her knee, surely. That's quite an important word to omit. I thought he was boring tbh think she was better matched with chandler. God imagine the long winter nights watching civil War documentaries with cigar smoke getting right in your face.

Pumperthepumper · 02/12/2022 21:14

No, I thought that when I first watched it too, but when I watch it as an adult it’s such a fucked-up relationship. He definitely knew her when she was growing up and that’s just rank. Plus Chandler and Monica have undeniable chemistry, even though I can’t stand either of them.

Nope. Sorry, there is no getting over it. He is literally my perfect man 🥰 I'm 38 so hopefully not too young for him if he time travels into my reality!

No, it’s her face isn’t it? Doesn’t she say ‘he kissed me right here’ and point to her face?

OneCup · 02/12/2022 21:16

I found him to be such a boring character. There's nothing to him. He's not funny or interesting.
