FRIENDS - Monica and Richard ❤️

Watching this, for the millionth time. Because it's great. Obviously. I'm on series 3 and Monica and Richard have just broken up... and it bloody well guts me everytime. He is the PERFECT man. Someone of his character is literally the only one who could pull me out of single life. Strong, stable, funny and genuine. Just a lovely man.

Yes he knew her as a child but I don't think he "watched her grow up" or was very familiar with her, same as I don't really know some of my friends kids. He didn't even recognise her when they met up years later but saw her for what she was - a 26 year old woman.

He was much better for her than man baby Chandler. Richard was an equal partner, she didn't have to "tutor" him. Shame they wanted different things in the end.

Oh and also she was absolutely stunning in series 2, best she ever looked.

I know, I know and the answer is no - I have nothing better to do right now! So thought I'd start a thread on my favourite TV show 😃

Ross and Charlie

I can't get past this tbh. Someone of his age seeking a relationship with a 26 year old women, particularly knowing he didn't want more kids but even without that factor, cannot be the perfect man. He'd be lucky just not being a creep.

And that's without the fact that he knew her as a kid!

It should have been:

Chandler and Janice
Monica and Richard
Phoebe and David

I would definitely have wanted to date Richard when I was 26. He's gorgeous. I have always liked Tom Selleck and have always like much older men. Weirdly Chandler was always the one I fancied more than Ross/Joey though.

However I love Monica and Chandler together, from the episode where he pretends to be cross about her booking the venue to the engagement (which makes me cry without fail every time, which is probably about 100 times) I just love how they are together. I agree that their chemistry has always been clear throughout.

Excited101 · 22/04/2023 19:17

I mean, I have an age gap of 20 years with dp… but we’re that bit older than Monica and Richard! I did like her with Chandler/ he was more on her level and obviously the children thing made it a definite. I liked Richard too though, even though the knowing her as a child thing was very weird.

No, I can't get over the fact he knew her as a child. Gross!!

I'm another one who thinks Rachel and Joey had better chemistry than Rachel and Ross. The way they rushed to finish up the Rachel and Joey storyline was so unsatisfying.

Controversial one maybe... I think that Chandler and Phoebe would have made a much better couple than Chandler and Monica! I find Chandler and Monica so dull.

I thought Rachel and Joey had 0 chemistry. Just didn't feel believable at all. Gavin however ...

ComfortablyDazed · 22/04/2023 21:22

Ah, yes. Gavin….

Ah, yes. Gavin….

He's gorgeous, out of all the guest stars and main cast he's definitely the one I'd choose 😁

ComfortablyDazed · 22/04/2023 21:44

Agree - 100% my type!

Kiss her knee, surely. That's quite an important word to omit. I thought he was boring tbh think she was better matched with chandler. God imagine the long winter nights watching civil War documentaries with cigar smoke getting right in your face.

Shark porn though. I’d rather the civil war tbh

ComfortablyDazed · 22/04/2023 22:19

Well, to be fair, Chandler wasn’t actually watching shark porn!

GettingThereCharleyBear · 22/04/2023 22:23

Very very creepy. My dh is 52 and his bf’s daughter is 24 and absolutely gorgeous. We’ve known her since she was a baby - it would be as creepy as fuck for them to date! And his bf would not be ok with it either 😬😳🤬.

It should have been:
Chandler and Janice
Ross and Emily
Monica and Richard
Phoebe and David

Rachel and a spin-off in Paris (“les amis” obviously) where she ends up with the chef from Emily in Paris.

I don’t know about Joey. He never had anyone who suited him.

Curveball but I actually think Joey and Janice would have been a great couple (if he could stand her lol). Both quite warm, caring and genuine personalities, both ditsy and silly.

I used to love Phoebe and Mike but actually I do think David would have been better for her.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 23/04/2023 15:02

I love Janice. The comic timing that actress had was amazing!

CocoPlum · 23/04/2023 16:06

Monica would not have had biological children with Richard ... wasn't the point that the fertility issues were both her and Chandler? So unlikely she would have conceived naturally with Richard, and they would have broken up as she would want to go the adoption route and he wouldn't.

Iamtheonwandlonely · 23/04/2023 17:24

I didn't like Joey and Rachel they had no chemistry.
Also I feel Joey wouldn't have done that to his friend.

Phoebe and David would have been a better match.
But I never liked Phoebe she comes across as mean but "it's a joke" kind of person.

Diddelydi · 23/04/2023 17:29

Team Richard 😘

I'm genuinely curious to know why people so often say this - I can't see anything wrong with Mike and Phoebe as a couple, they seem great to me!

dayswithaY · 02/12/2022 20:32

No, it was wrong. Richard was a long standing friend of Monica’s Dad - they played golf together. Would you date your Dad’s friend?

Monica was friends with Richard’s daughter who was the same age.

Richard told Monica he had only ever slept with one woman before her - his ex-wife. He was never going to commit to Monica.

Then Monica snogged Richard’s son!

Wrong on every level. Even in 1996.

No.but none of my Dad,s friends look.like Tom.selleck😂
They wanted different things in life and they were at different stages of life so ultimately I don't think.it would have worked

God, no! I couldn't stand Emily. Thank god she didn't become a regular feature.

I really like Mike - great guy and they were a good couple.

But she’d been in love with David since series 1 (and him with her). He was funny and quirky and they just seemed the better match.

Nothing against Mike - he just didn’t have the history, and the oddness.

Hank Azaria (David) and Matthew Perry were good friends in real life before Friends even started airing.

Mike was great but fairly normal - I think it's because David was a little goofy and esoteric like Phoebe.

With Mike you feel like he could have had a million women and been fine with all of them, but David probably Phoebe was the perfect lid for his pot.

Plus Hank Azaria is just lovely.

They didn't have much of a history though ,they were only together a week before he went to Minsk, and then there was a brief interlude at some point ,was she in love with him?
It may not have worked out had he been around for longer .

I agree. Mike was actually quite boring. But also if you think about it, she decided she wanted to have a wedding and be a "soccer mom" so bla Mike makes sense

Interesting, I see Mike as goofier than David. David was a funny character but seemed very shy and self deprecating as a person. With Mike I always think of the episode where they both changed their names, or when she gets him to mime playing the piano when they first meet. He just seemed more confident and like he matched her silly energy better.
