I love In the Bleak Midwinter, but I also love O Holy Night. Not sure which I prefer.

PurBal · 22/11/2022 19:47

In the Bleak Midwinter. In particular the setting by Harold Darke.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/11/2022 19:47

We Three Kings of Orient Are.

Although I suspect this is because my class rebelliously belted out a rude version at a carol service in our village square which mortified our teacher and still makes me laugh over thirty years later.

avocadoandchill · 22/11/2022 19:48

So many good ones! Yet the carol singers we get always sing we wish you a merry Christmas and stick out their hand for their cash.

Coventry Carol
and
Carol of the Bells

CaronPoivre · 22/11/2022 19:48

Too many and different ones for different occasions.
Away in a manger by tiny children.
Adeste Fidelis as a decent ‘belt it out and raise the roof’ hymn as the Christmas Eve finale. Must be in Latin though.
A pure voice opening Christmas with Once in Royal David’s city.
Silent night at our candlelit village Carol service.
To play, Lo How a rose ere blooming or O Holy night. Love the Sussex Carol too.

Haha oh yes I remember singing a rude version too!

It's a good tune though.

I might see if I can get a cd of them.

In The Bleak Midwinter is glorious, but my favourite is Jesus Christ The Apple Tree, particularly when sung by King’s College choir or similar.

Always4Brenner · 22/11/2022 19:55

I saw three ships
past three o clock.I think it’s called.

Carol of the Bells

MissyB1 · 22/11/2022 19:58

O Come O Come Immanuel
Come Come to the manger.

Vigneau · 22/11/2022 20:01

In The Bleak Mid Winter - for me this is a perfect song for piety, though in some ways a bit self-indulging, sanctimonious even. Dish out some help, before going back to the castle. Food banks rings a bell.

Hark The Herald Angels Sing - this is uplifting, about being within humankind, joyous, hopeful and prosperous. All being together, as one. It is a happy, joyful, song about living together. Not in the same house though.

We Three Kings - this is a cover version. According to the alternate rhyme they came 'bearing their gifts from Leamington Spa'. Or Silicon Spa as it is now known. This is a song about streaming the latest video game - Gold, Frankincense and Forza Horizon. It is about gifts. Before Bitcoin.

Myeyeballsareonfire · 22/11/2022 20:01

Oh Holy night or Silent night. I actually cry to both of them 🤣

AnImaginaryCat · 22/11/2022 20:02

I feel like I read the question wrong as my answer was going to be "Muppets".

😐

PhotoDad · 22/11/2022 20:04

I like Hark The Herald Angels Sing, mainly because of the trumpet-like tenor line. Even if it seems to embrace the heresy of docetism.

TheNewlmprovedMrsMadEvans · 22/11/2022 20:06

Carol of the bells

LadyOfTheCanyon · 22/11/2022 20:08

Carol of the bells because it's slightly creepy.
