I like the three ships one.

I’m atheist too, but the English choral tradition is sublime. The sheer kitsch of Christmas carol services can’t be beaten.

Moonflower12 · 22/11/2022 20:27

In the Bleak Midwinter. Due to this carol I am now with my husband so it has a very special meaning.

I also love Oh Come, Oh Come Emanuel.

PigLightingBastard · 22/11/2022 20:27

Film? Muppets, clearly.

Songs? O Holy Night as sung by a Welsh male voice choir, and God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen as sung by John Finnemore.

In the bleak midwinter. Beautiful music, gorgeous words.

Rauha · 22/11/2022 20:28

O Holy Night

maddiemookins16mum · 22/11/2022 20:29

Oh Holy Night. I get weepy hearing it sometimes (especially if on the Sherry).

Germolenequeen · 22/11/2022 20:29

Oh Come All Ye Faithfull
Once in Royal David's City
Hark The Herald Angels

In fact I love most carols - as a pp said they make me cry because they bring back childhood memories

dementedma · 22/11/2022 20:29

And pretty much all other carols.
Love a local carol concert

Germolenequeen · 22/11/2022 20:30

Oh Little Town of Bethlehem too

YorkshireMom · 22/11/2022 20:31

Oh come all ye faithful - especially with the descant
Once in royal David's city

That's a good one yes.

I'm going to have to look at Carol of the bells

In The Bleak Mid Winter - for me this is a perfect song for piety, though in some ways a bit self-indulging, sanctimonious even. Dish out some help, before going back to the castle. Food banks rings a bell.

Hark The Herald Angels Sing - this is uplifting, about being within humankind, joyous, hopeful and prosperous. All being together, as one. It is a happy, joyful, song about living together. Not in the same house though.

We Three Kings - this is a cover version. According to the alternate rhyme they came 'bearing their gifts from Leamington Spa'. Or Silicon Spa as it is now known. This is a song about streaming the latest video game - Gold, Frankincense and Forza Horizon. It is about gifts. Before Bitcoin.

Are you sure you're not moving up the message with Good King Wenceslas? As there is no nobleman in In the Bleak Midwinter?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 22/11/2022 20:37

In Dulci Jubilo, in 8 parts.

Three Kings from Persian lands afar.

oujiawoowoo2 · 22/11/2022 20:38

I love the holly and the ivy when sung by a proper choir - it just evokes that proper Christmas feeling for me.

user1471453601 · 22/11/2022 20:38

As a total change of pace, one of the most "beautiful" carols for me is Johnny Cash, in old age, singing The little Drummer Boy. Thankfully without the awful " dum de dum" bit. I find it so emotional, it's banned from our home now.

I agree. It's one of the few times I like choirs

In the Bleak Midwinter - but there's 2 versions and I only like one of them.

AutisticLegoLover · 22/11/2022 20:46

I'd really like to make it to church this year. I live midnight mass. When I was wee I dreamed of being old enough to go to midnight mass. Ds is 7 going on 8 and I'm debating it. Silent night and In The Bleak Mid Winter make me cry. I sniffle like a right fool at Christmas mass.
