A few family and friends meeting up for Christmas, and I would like some ideas for a Board Game to amuse and interest us. Any recommendations please?

I heard of one called: Things they dont teach you in School
and another called: The Hygge Game

Are they good, or of course any other please???

Thank you

Cranium, it combines all sorts of abilities so good for a group of people

Many thanks, I will check out that one. x

There are so many now - it depends what you like. What are some of the games you've enjoyed in the past?

Me and my adult DC love Telestrations.
We are literally howling with laughter all through playing it, even though we've played it countless times.

watcherintherye · 21/11/2022 19:52

Articulate is always fun! We also play Scrabble a lot and Uno, which is cards rather than a board game, but easy to play without being boring.

I have just seen something similar in the Christmas section, and was stunned by the huge selections. Don't laugh when I say I remember enjoying Cluedo!! But there will a mix of 30 somethings, so I will need to explore some updated games!

How many people, and how long do you want it to last? More of a silly party game, or something with some strategy? Competitive or co-operative? There are so many boardgames now!

Indigo

Quick to play and very competitive but easy to be chatting whilst you go. Big hit with older kids and friends.

The Hygge Game is really rubbish. It's like a team-building exercise in a box.

TragicMuse · 21/11/2022 19:59

Qwirkle! Great for adults and kids. We really enjoy it.

Hadalifeonce · 21/11/2022 20:00

We love Balderdash.

Ilovetocrochet · 21/11/2022 20:03

Our family favourites is Scattegories, but we argue so much about the words chosen! I forgot to take it with me to my sister last year and was almost sent home in a taxi to get it!

I am taking on board (scuse the pun) all your comments and thoughts. Did not really realise just how complicated the choice of Board Games can be. Have crossed Hygge off my List, thanks for the comment.

The ones I have up listed at present to check out are as follows. Any comment about them would be appreciated.

Cranium
Robinson Crusoe
Munchkin
Splendour
The King's Dilemma

We are a little obsessed with Rummy Cub 🫣 it's a numbers game without the adding but we are hooked! Spent the whole summer touring wales playing it in the evening. I also have a deluxe Argos bingo set which is also a firm favourite!

00100001 · 21/11/2022 20:16

Robinson Crusoe if this is the co-op verso, it's hardcore and not a "family" game!

Try What Next, by Big Potato Games

Good bit of dexterity, puzzle solving etc involved

Some of those are fast/fun, others are a lot more strategy/head-scratching. I recommended The King's Dilemma on another thread but it's a story that unfolds over a dozen games, which probably isn't what you're looking for!

If you and your friends like detective stories, then "Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective" gives you mysteries to solve together and lasts a couple of hours.

If you want a "teamwork" game that lasts an hour, then "Pandemic" is fantastic but a bit puzzle-y.

Something in between might be "Port Royal" which is also very cheap?

Lots of PP have suggested fast party games already!

00100001 · 21/11/2022 20:17

Splendor is a great game.

Depends what kind of vibe you're going for?

00100001 · 21/11/2022 20:19

Coloretto is a good, fairly quick, light.card.game, enough choice and thought needed.

Busygoingblah · 21/11/2022 20:19

Big potato games make lots of good party games for small groups

Mondaymoultingtherestoftheweekisgoodtoo · 21/11/2022 20:55

Yes, I think I understand what most of you are saying now. Some Board Games are obviously very good, but probably require more experience of board gaming. Thank you for some lighter suggestions, and suggestions for easing into games.

You have all been superb x

Obama Llama is fun for small groups. As is Telestrations - which can end up being hilarious. You've Got Problems - is sort of a much more pleasant version of Cards Against Humanity which doesn't require you to 'do' anything other than talk.

Strategy type games we like Isle of Cats, Carcassonne, Settlers of Catan. Pandemic is good too but isn't a competitive game - you're all playing on the same side.

Squiblet · 21/11/2022 21:38

Splendour is not much fun IMO, just a lot of swapping tokens for cards and cards for tiles.

Poetry for Neanderthals is fun if you are quick with words. Dixit is great if you like to make up stories. Forbidden island/desert/stars etc are co-op games that are a bit more involved but my kids had no trouble with them at ages 8 and 10. Love Letter is a quick card game that's more fun than Uno, I think.

Squiblet · 21/11/2022 21:39

There's loads of info on the website called boardgamegeek

Mondaymoultingtherestoftheweekisgoodtoo · 21/11/2022 22:23

You are all really kind in taking the time to suggest and explain these games. Thank you. I will do research, with great ideas now. Will be great to get people involved together. x👌

Not a board game technically but Exploding Kittens is good.
