A few family and friends meeting up for Christmas, and I would like some ideas for a Board Game to amuse and interest us. Any recommendations please?

I heard of one called: Things they dont teach you in School
and another called: The Hygge Game

Are they good, or of course any other please???

Thank you

Munchkin is good silly fun and out can totally stitch people up (looking at you my own mother...)

I would second magesterium. Dh, dds and I are serial board gamers but my mum will join in sometimes and likes slightly less complex ones. She loves this as we all do.

Another one we like is dixit - you have to suggest words based on pictures then guess who guessed what (sort of - easy to play hard to explain). Has led to many rows and laughs here.

Cranium. Particularly if you're drinking/drunk 😂

Saboteur is a fun and easy game, you play as gold mining dwarves and you're playing together to teach the gold by building tunnels- you're not allowed to discuss the route and watch out because there may be a saboteur amongst you!

Machi Koro is also another favourite- monopoly like but far more fun and engaging!

Otherwise, Hues and Cues is good, Dixit, Ticket to Ride is great too.

Apples to Apples is brilliant for large groups.

Cards against humanity isn't even a game. It's just reading out faux shocking statements. It's entertaining for maybe 10 mins max the first time you open the box.

What about a murder mystery puzzle rather than a boardgame OP? Or party games like secret hitler, coup, werewolf, resistance- they all have an element of bluffing or teamwork and are good with a bigger group. Secret Hitler has a free print and play version on their website so you can give it a go before buying.

Otherwise definitely agree rummykub is great. The rules are simple to pick up which is useful if you dont play a lot of games and don't want to get bogged down in a rule book at christmas.

as said by someone else - Exploding kittens is great

also for a board game Sequence is really good

Fishbowl although it’s not a board game and you don’t have to buy it.
I’ve never played it and not laughed so much I still felt in in my stomach muscles the next day.
The contents are driven by the players so it can be tame or risqué and still be a lot of fun.

Has anyone got Taskmaster the board game? During a family discussion yesterday re how to entertain my ........... errr tricky ...... in-laws for a few hours on Boxing Day, since we won't be able to go out for our traditional walk due to mobility issues, Dd said we could do with something like taskmaster where you're not tied to an actual board and can do challenges around the house etc and I saw today there's an actual game of it - reviews look good but you can never tell! Is there somethings similar/better perhaps?

We've got taskmaster. I'm not a massive fan because I'm quite shy and there's lots of role playing, dance and general showing off... some people in our family love it, people who are less keen on board games are even less keen on this.

Forbidden Island is quite a nice co-operative game for up to 4 people. Exploding Kittens is fun. I've enjoyed playing Carcasonne with my parents before (my Dad quietly owned everyone much to my Mum's disgust!). Ticket to Ride is another good one. Scrabble is a classic.
Might be worth considering a more co-op style of game to stop everyone falling out with each other if there are any grumpy losers in your group (speaking as a grumpy loser myself!)

BIWI · 23/11/2022 20:20

Pass the Bomb is also great - results in lots of tense hysteria!

DriftwoodOnTheShore · 23/11/2022 20:23

Concept. Very good. And any Ticket to Ride.

This was a big hit in our house

Mysterium is a great game for a group.

As victorian mediums you have to work out who was murdered, in which room, and by what method, only receiving 'visions' from a ghost in the house. Each player has their own murder to solve, and the 'ghost' will try to communicate this with a series of vision cards across 7 rounds. In the final round players must use the information they have collected to identify which victim has been communicating with them and still haunts the house.

The game lasts a good hour or so, but due to the set number of rounds won't go on for eternity, and personally I find the victorian theme quite 'christmasy'.

Our family loves Mysterium- it's great if you enjoy something a little bit spooky, the artwork is beautiful and the gameplay is different to any other boardgame I've ever tried. It uses imagination and interpretation rather than pure chance or strategy. It also stands up to repeat plays which is important as some games are pretty pricey.

Stay Cool is a really great party game. Need minimum of 3 players. One person is doing the answers. At the same time you have 1 person asking you general knowledge type questions whilst someone else is asking other questions where you have to spell the answers out with lettered dice. Very good when a few drinks have been had!

"Green Mexican" is genuinely the best board game. Its plot is entertaining and exciting. Don is the leading Mexican. He began to think about going on a well-deserved rest. To do this, he needs a receiver. To earn Don's respect, you need to do his tasks. However, there is a severe obstacle in the face of the insidious adviser of the Mexican because he also wants to get a tasty place, so he will try in every possible way to interfere and prove to Don that the other players are not able to perform his tasks. Another option is to collect puzzles; there are various drawings and difficulty levels. I think you will decide for yourself what suits you best!

Great recommendations!! Noting some of them to try with my family. We are kind of classic, we love playing Jenga Giant any chance we get. Just like the regular game, but I guess the bigger size (and bigger mess made) makes it funnier for us.
