A few family and friends meeting up for Christmas, and I would like some ideas for a Board Game to amuse and interest us. Any recommendations please?

I heard of one called: Things they dont teach you in School
and another called: The Hygge Game

Are they good, or of course any other please???

Thank you

Camel Up (betting on a camel race) is our go to board game to play with adults who aren’t board gamers.

Love Letter is a quick card game that's more fun than Uno, I think.

Shock More fun than Uno? Impossible! Wink

The shine did come off Uno at about game #367, when the DC were younger, it's true ... I was so glad when Exploding kittens and Love Letter came along!

If you are broad of mind
Cards against humanity
but only if you are all on the same 'wavelength' (can be rude etc)

Mysterium is a great game for a group.

As victorian mediums you have to work out who was murdered, in which room, and by what method, only receiving 'visions' from a ghost in the house. Each player has their own murder to solve, and the 'ghost' will try to communicate this with a series of vision cards across 7 rounds. In the final round players must use the information they have collected to identify which victim has been communicating with them and still haunts the house.

The game lasts a good hour or so, but due to the set number of rounds won't go on for eternity, and personally I find the victorian theme quite 'christmasy'.

We love taboo but its not a board game, just howl inducing fun

BIWI · 22/11/2022 17:03

Scrawl is really good - light-hearted, as rude as you want to be, and very funny.

BIWI · 22/11/2022 17:06

And also Chameleon

Some classics we love:
Bananagrams
Monopoly Deal
Skulls
Perudo
Articulate
Boggle
Upwords

We are a little obsessed with Rummy Cub 🫣 it's a numbers game without the adding but we are hooked! Spent the whole summer touring wales playing it in the evening. I also have a deluxe Argos bingo set which is also a firm favourite!

We have travel Rummikub, it's been to Mexico, Cape Verde, Mauritius, Scotland. Me and DH love it!

lurchermummy · 22/11/2022 18:54

We love cards against humanity but it's filthy

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/11/2022 18:56

Phase Ten is brilliant (card game similar to Uno)

Articulate great for a big group

ApolloandDaphne · 22/11/2022 18:57

Listography is our favourite.

Myjobisanightmare · 22/11/2022 19:09

Which would you choose for yourself and partner and two adult daughters with a few drinks and loads of laughter Telestrations or one of the others?

donttalkaboutbookclub · 22/11/2022 19:33

If you like Uno, you have to get Uno Extreme as it launches cards out of a machine at you - so brilliant!

Throughabushbackwards · 22/11/2022 21:05

Haven't RTFT but I'd always go with Balderdash. It's the best game for people who don't 'do' board games, and it can be absolutely hilarious

teachermummyme · 22/11/2022 23:04

Balderdash, which has been mentioned, is great fun. Sillier, but also great, is Speak Out!

CantStartaFireWithoutaSpark · 22/11/2022 23:12

Placemarking! Great thread!

Has anyone got Taskmaster the board game? During a family discussion yesterday re how to entertain my ........... errr tricky ...... in-laws for a few hours on Boxing Day, since we won't be able to go out for our traditional walk due to mobility issues, Dd said we could do with something like taskmaster where you're not tied to an actual board and can do challenges around the house etc and I saw today there's an actual game of it - reviews look good but you can never tell! Is there somethings similar/better perhaps?

Pea79 · 22/11/2022 23:51

Linkee and Bananagrams always go down well with our family at Christmas.

Cards Against Humanity is good with an older, open-minded crowd.

There's loads of info on the website called boardgamegeek

Excellent site

Oops, didn’t mean Boggle - should’ve put Dobble!

also - Yahtzee can be played without buying a game (just need 5 dice, and can download and print out scoresheet) and likewise Scattergories - no need to buy it - can google some lists and use a phone timer

Notcreativeatall · 23/11/2022 05:14

we play loads but a fave at the moment is secret hitler

Pepperama · 23/11/2022 05:56

In a similar situation we usually play the card game Uno Flip - but more exciting/strategic than the traditional Uno but just as easy to add more people, quick rounds so fits around good courses etc
