Tell me your best porridge topper ideas

My new favourite breakfast - porridge - as it's warm and filling. I cheat and use the sachets. Current fave toppers are chopped banana with a sprinkle of sweet cinnamon.

What else can I try?

Honey blueberries and chia seeds 🥰

theyoungishman · 17/11/2022 08:33

Honey, banana, chia seeds and chopped toasted nuts / peanut butter and grated apple / fresh mango and roasted shredded coconut / A big dollop of Biscoff and cacao nibs

Best porridge topper I ever had was at the Slieve Donard hotel: Bushmills whiskey, honey and pouring cream. Yum yum!

justanoldhack · 17/11/2022 08:41

Almond butter, blueberry/raspberry compote, flaked toasted coconut. Cooked in oat milk
Just buy a big bag of oats and portion out yourself - sachets are just unnecessary packaging

BobbyBobbyBobby · 17/11/2022 08:43

Chocolate chips and if plain porridge, also drinking chocolate stirred in.

LucySno · 17/11/2022 08:43

When I was younger (like.. 32 not a child! But single and no kids) I used to not open my dairy milk advent calendar mon- Fri and then on Saturday morning have a bowl of hot porridge with the weeks advent calendar chocolates melted on top.

Another thing gone by the wayside due to mum life!

My favourite porridge ATM is Jamie Oliver's granola dust made with Almond Milk.

I layer my porridge. oats, chopped apple, oats, cream

Or use any of .....maple syrup, sultanas, chopped plums, chopped rhubarb, hazel nuts in honey, bramble jelly, bottled blackberries, rosehip syrup, etc.

Basically, all the produce I collected in the summer and froze, or bottled. It keeps us going through the winter and means DS gets two of his 5 a day at breakfast without noticing 😊

Makes note to try this next time DS is out. 🙂

Rhubarb compote is my go to
DH has cinnamon and honey

Floydthebarber · 17/11/2022 09:00

Maple syrup, just a small drizzle.

Over Christmas though, cream and a splash of whisky.

KupoNutCoffee · 17/11/2022 09:00

Too much sugar and evaporated milk.
Mum used to get dried fruits and put them in, they'd partially hydrate and go all soft and warm.

Xiaoxiong · 17/11/2022 09:02

A pat of salted butter (amazing!!!!) and maple syrup. Apples and mixed spice as well if I have time.

Need to start making porridge for breakfast again!

OllytheCollie · 17/11/2022 09:03

Whoever said a whole mince pie - total fecking genius!!! My post Christmas comedown breakfasts always involve stirring leftover mincemeat into porridge.

NCFT0922 · 17/11/2022 09:04

Can’t believe mine hasn’t been mentioned; 4 squares of dark chocolate and a handful of raspberries. Heaven in a bowl 😍

AlannaOfTrebond · 17/11/2022 09:04

Grated carrot, sultanas and cinnamon cooked with the oats, sprinkle some crushed walnuts on top.

Carrot cake porridge!

Hillrunning · 17/11/2022 09:07

I put a few frozen raspberries in while cooking. Fun as it makes it bright pink. Then a spoon of any nut butter on top after.

AlannaOfTrebond · 17/11/2022 09:09

A spoonful of nutella mixed in and crushed hazelnuts on top.

One square of dark chocolate stirred in, topped with coconut and hazelnuts.

My actual daily breakfast is porridge with cinnamon, greek yoghurt, blueberries, raspberries. If I'm feeling decadent I add some of those dried fruit and seed toppers that you get in health food shops.

The nutella and chocolate ones tend to be evening treats.

SuperCamp · 17/11/2022 09:20

I defrost frozen blueberries in the microwave in the bottom of my bowl and then pour the porridge on top.

Or just stir frozen berries in which cools the porridge: handy if you are in a hurry.

Soscrewed · 17/11/2022 09:24

My children like fruit puree (from.the baby aisle, though they are no longer babies). My favourite is a tin of pears blitzed with the blender and mix some.of that through.

Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia · 17/11/2022 09:25

Real jumbo rolled or even pinhead oats only take a couple of minutes if you soak them overnight. It's also healthier as oats contain phytin which can block absorption of certain nutrients, but soaking reduces the effect.

I like blackstrap molasses (just a small drizzle)
Or sometimes raspberries or strawberries mixed in while it's cooking. Frozen are great for this. And maybe some cream mixed in at the end if I'm feeling indulgent.

HeatwaveToNightshade · 17/11/2022 09:38

Grated apple, coconut and a few sultanas. Heated with the porridge rather than added afterwards.

Or a banana mashed in.

Like the sound of dark chocolate and raspberries though!

NoDairyNoProblem · 17/11/2022 09:40

Warm frozen black cherries and then crumble one small square of dark chocolate.
