Weirdest thing you've had in a lasagne?

My DH wants me to put carrots in a lasagne. Yay or nay? What's the weirdest or nicest thing you've put in a lasagne?

I always put carrots and mushrooms in my lasagne, and a powdered stock cube for flavour.

SunshineAndFizz · 15/11/2022 21:49

I found a pineapple chunk in my dad's lasagna once.

He'd accidentally used a jar of sweet and sour instead of Dolmio sauce Grin

My friend once made a stewed apple and cinnamon lasagne with custard for the top layer! It was actually quite nice but definitely weird.

Littleguggi · 15/11/2022 21:49

Steamed veg, including cubed chunks of carrot
Don't mind grated carrot if mixed with mince

Boiled egg sliced!!! I forgot that. I think I'm also still recovering... it was the post about ham reminded me

No that's just rank!!

I mean lentils are unusual.

Ham is common in Italian lasagne.

That sounds delicious!

100% carrots ! I like to grate mine . It adds very little difference in taste but packs in some extra nutrition ( plus my kids don’t notice 😛)

Also half pork and half beef mince. Makes it richer.

Vegetable lasagne at a local pub had whole sprouts in it. That was interesting.

OMG @MarxandMarzipan when I was in hospital having DS I had a veggie lasagne with halved sprouts in it. I think I'm triggered... Christ, that was 18 years ago and I still remember how foul it was.

lasangya · 15/11/2022 21:55

The lentils are to bulk out the mince.

Ok I shall put grated carrot in it. I'm wondering about spinach.

100cookbooks.wordpress.com/2012/05/14/lasagne-sam-sterns-cooking-up-a-storm/

This has the recipe for Sam Stern's lasagne. He does a great student cook book, very reliable recipes. I'd start with this and then mess about with it once you've made that.

I would personally add cheddar to the white sauce and red wine to the Bolognese sauce. I'd use 5% fat mince.

Tortillas instead of lasagne sheets - ace min!

TheSausageKingofChicago · 15/11/2022 21:56

Chicken instead of beef. I like chicken and I like lasagne, but never the twain…

That is revolting

Are they the chips? So like nachos? Or the wrap things?

Tuna and cheese lasagna was lush

MilkshakesBringAllTheCoosToTheYard · 15/11/2022 21:58

@lasangya to add insult to injury (I was in for a week) they came round and told me i was 'bunged up'. You don't bloody say, you've fed me on boiled slop all week. Vom.

RedSoloCup · 15/11/2022 22:00

I put everything we have in it.

I do meat sometimes but mainly quorn as dd2 is veggie.

This weeks had onions, mushrooms, quorn, sweetcorn, pepper and courgette.

mondaytosunday · 15/11/2022 22:00

I put Milano salami in mine. No mince. Peppers as an vegetarian alternative.

Lookingformymarbles · 15/11/2022 22:02

Can I just defend the humble boiled egg for a moment? My friend worked with Italians and was taught to make lasagne 'properly' which includs chopped boiled egg between the pasta and white sauce.

It is the nicest lasagne ever!

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/11/2022 22:04

Turkey mince lasagne was absolutely awful.

katseyes7 · 15/11/2022 22:06

Carrots, in a veggie lasagne in a place in Amsterdam. Not just 'carrots' but big thick chunks of them. About an inch thick.

Chicken instead of beef. I like chicken and I like lasagne, but never the twain…

I used to buy a scummy chicken and bacon lasagne from M and S. They then of course stopped making it so I now make my own...
When I was working in the school kitchen they used to serve Baked Bean lasagne!!
