Weirdest thing you've had in a lasagne?

My DH wants me to put carrots in a lasagne. Yay or nay? What's the weirdest or nicest thing you've put in a lasagne?

Me too @Vallmo47 ! They put a layer of crushed cheese and onion crisps on the top and it is surprising tasty 😁

Meadowbreeze · 15/11/2022 22:08

@lasangya I've seen spinach added to the fancy recipe ones with goats cheese. I feel the taste is quite strong, though I can imagine it goes well with lentils and some goat cheese. If you want to bulk it up further, I recommend mushrooms. They're cheap and you can't taste them once they're minced in the red sauce. I don't like them and I never taste them.

I use my food processor to chop the carrots and celery into tiny pieces but grating it would have a similar effect!

Me toy but I'm lazy and bung the onions in too. Easiest way to get a fine soffritto I think.

gogohmm · 15/11/2022 22:10

Soffrito, the basis for a good ragu, contains celery, carrots and onions so he's right

Leftleg · 15/11/2022 22:12

I put carrot, onion and celery in the food processor, to start the ragu. This also bulks out the mince so there's no need to add lentils to bulk out.
Strangest was a slimming world baked bean lasagne recipe but it was quite nice!

BretonBlue · 15/11/2022 22:13

Weirder to put lentils in a lasagne than carrots!

I have a family member who makes a Slimming World lasagne. The mince is watery and it has cottage cheese instead of béchamel 🤢

Nicest surprise in a lasagne which shouldn't work but does is to use a really deep dish and alternate the ragu layers with veg ones for a lighter dish overall.
So a layer of roast veg, then ragu and cheese, then cottage cheese mixed with garlic mushrooms, then ragu and cheese, then sliced tomatoes and basil leaves, then ragu etc. cook it very long and slow.

Most disappointing lasagne was when DM had a 'moment' and used baked beans instead of tinned tomatoes and still went on to make it into lasagne. It was unsuccessful.

Where’s the pasta?

IWasFunBeforeMum · 15/11/2022 22:15

Ex housemate put peas in his.

QuietYou · 15/11/2022 22:17

SIL once served a chicken and mushroom lasagne made with mushroom soup. It was deeply unpleasant not least because it was so grey.

Otherwise,
Mushrooms
Peppers
Lentils
Tuna and prawns
thankfully not all in the same dish!

PorridgewithQuark · 15/11/2022 22:18

Apple and quark lasagna - had it at work yesterday. To be fair its not really lasagna as the pasta layers are thin pastry and it's served with vanilla sauce, but it's called lasagna on the menu... It's pretty good.

ODFOx · 15/11/2022 22:19

@BretonBlue
lasagne sheets between each layer , as always

So do you grate the carrot?

I haven’t cooked since approximately 1994, but no for a soffritto you dice it small. That won’t help you with bulk though, it’s like a stock flavour.

Yellowcakestand · 15/11/2022 22:23

Once mum served up something yellow with green spots. I couldn't eat it.
Turns out she did something different. Chicken and broccoli lasagne. She never did it again

moofolk · 15/11/2022 22:27

Rachel's engagement ring

lasangya · 15/11/2022 22:31

I might chuck some mushrooms in too

Olive oil, diced bacon/pancetta, fry add small dice carrot, onion, celery, garlic (I add small diced courgette and mushroom too to add veg and bulk) , oregano, thyme, soften the lot until just about to brown then up heat and add beef mince, brown mince. Add a glass of red wine, cook off alcohol, add 2-3 cans of tomatoes and 2 of beef stock (I don't buy it canned just use the cans to measure), squirt of tomato puree cook for at least 60-90 minutes on low, longer if you've got time, if it's reducing too quickly add water. Freezes nicely, good for lasagne or just with spaghetti

LondonWolf · 15/11/2022 22:35

Butternut squash. Jamie Oliver recipe and actually scrumptious.

catfunk · 15/11/2022 22:39

Kerry Katona was flogging a chicken tikka lasagne for Iceland years ago

I ordered a veggie lasagne in a pub and it had big lumps of cauliflower, broccoli, parsnip and potato along with peas and beans.
Pretty sure it was the leftover veg from the sunday rost between two sheets if pasta!!!!

🤢 That sounds grim.

I tried that once in a restaurant it was nice but it wasn't lasagne for me.

racquel86 · 15/11/2022 22:54

Boiled eggs in halves - my DP puts them in and apparently it's the 'Italian way' ....... he is part Italian. I find it weird tho, not totally unpleasant but weird. And he hardly uses any white sauce which to me is the worst part 😰🤣

MargaretThursday · 15/11/2022 23:02

We always have carrots (and courgettes and mushrooms) chunks in our lasagne. Chunks partially because dd had a number of food phobias after she'd been very ill and hardly ate anything and she could pick the chunks of carrots out.

My mum puts raisins and celery in lasagne.

But the winner goes to ds. I think he was 3yo at the time, and loved helping me cook. So I gave him the mushrooms to cut with a butter knife and he was happily chopping them up and dropping them in the pan as he did so. I was chopping the onions so my vision wasn't quite so good at the point when I realised he'd finished the mushrooms and had also chopped up the cherry tomatoes (not too bad), a good few grapes, and about half a rather soft apple and added them all to the mix.
I didn't tell his sisters until after they'd eaten it. Grin

BirdWatch · 15/11/2022 23:05

An Italian women I knew 0ou sliced hard boiled eggs in her lasagne too.

Carrots, onion, celery, tomatoes and mushrooms go in my lasagne.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 15/11/2022 23:11

We make a Christmas lasagne on Dec 27th using shredded Turkey, sliced pigs in blankets and slices of stuffing in a tomato ragu sauce and then layered up like a "normal" lasagne. It's delicious!
