Hoping for a bit of perspective on this as feel really upset by it. The last few months I've managed to get into what (to me) was a pretty consistent exercise regime of running 3x a week (I did couch to 5k and now hoping to work my way up to a 10k), and strength training in the gym 2x a week. The other two days I do walking or might do a bit of swimming or cross training at the gym if the weather is awful. Anyway considering I have been overweight my entire adult life and always hated exercise I felt very proud that I have managed to keep this up. SIL asked me about it as I've lost some weight and so I told her what I'd been doing. She said the exercise I was doing was fairly minimal, didn't really count for anything and that the 30 minutes I do of strength training per session was "nowhere near enough". To be clear I push myself really hard during the 30 minutes, I do this amount of time because I have young DC and a busy job and I just do not have the time for longer sessions. She said "oh well I suppose it's better than nothing but it's the bare minimum really".

I feel totally deflated now tbh.

What a cow she is. You are doing amazing!

MintChocCornetto · 13/11/2022 20:24

I exercise loads and I think you should be really proud of yourself OP.

Not necessarily the weight loss but getting into an exercise routine, sticking to it and making it a regular part of your life. It's not easy, it really isn't. Building that habit takes persistence and hard work.

Your SIL is a miserable cow. If I knew you I'd say well done!

LimeCheesecake · 13/11/2022 20:29

Why do you assume she’s healthy because she’s thin? I’m a size 8 and really not healthy, damaged back means I do little exercise and you are probable stronger than me (I just am slim via how much I eat).

she probably threatened because she’s the slim one - you are losing weight. You are getting stronger. She is “the slim one”, the healthy one - you are now competing - in her mind anyway. So she’s putting you down and belittling what you are doing.

keep at it.

Well I’m slim and fit and well capable of dog walking but I don’t have the determination, discipline and focus to do C 2 5K .

chimayrah · 13/11/2022 19:43

She's slim and very attractive herself so I can't see why she would be jealous tbh.

She wants to keep you as the fat SIL the one she can look down on and congratulate herself on being slim and attractive. While judging you on being fat and greedy.

Seen this happen so many times and had it done to me. You being fat makes her feel that age is superior to you OP.

saraclara · 13/11/2022 20:35

You exercise seven times a week, whilst working and parenting, you are amazing! That is LOADS of exercise.

It really is! I felt tired just reading about your week! I feel really proud of myself if I manage to go to the gym three times a week, and I don't work.or have kids at home any more. Oh, and I failed to complete couch25k both times I started it 😳

I have no idea why she's being so ridiculous, but please ignore her and don't let her rain on your (very impressive) parade.

DuploWife · 13/11/2022 20:35

What an absolute waste of space she is. I'd be so proud if I was you, never listen to her again!

Essexexile · 13/11/2022 20:39

Nasty cow, she sounds jealous to me. I’m of the mind that if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.

Ignore her and keep doing what you’re doing.

My DH seems to be struggling with the fact I’m losing weight and gaining confidence, I’m now like f**k you and will keep going for me, you do the same 😀

MrsPerfect12 · 13/11/2022 20:41

You're doing loads, she is just being a nasty cow and doesn't want to see you do well. Keep going and we'll done.

Shrubb157 · 13/11/2022 20:43

You’re doing really well and are seeing progress. She sounds threatened by your progress to be honest.

If 30 mins sessions were ineffective PTs wouldn’t run them and there would be no 30 minute gym classes.

Well done! Ignore her.

pictish · 13/11/2022 20:45

She doesn’t want you to progress from the place she has assigned you (fat and unfit) as it makes her feel threatened. You do more exercise than her now.
The best way to achieve this is to put you down. Diminish it.

Picklewicklepickle · 13/11/2022 20:47

30 minutes can be really effective if you make the most of it, after that it can be the law of diminishing returns..it’s so hard to fit it in when you have a job and kids, it’s great you’ve found a routine that works for you

Also who is she to sneer about the bare minimum if all she does is walk the dog?!

Well done OP, it’s the absolute best thing you can do for your physical and mental health

Thundercats77 · 13/11/2022 20:47

Well done OP that's amazing and the fact you lost some weight too is incredible. I would ignore what she said. Its great you have a regime going on and have stuck to it. Keep it up.

Scandiscrepancy · 13/11/2022 20:48

Well done @chimayrah ! The best bit is that you’re enjoying exercise for benefits other than weight loss which means it is sustainable. Your SIL’s comments were horrible and designed to try and knock your confidence. For whatever reason she feels insecure and is seeking to bring you down so she can feel better about herself. I would just distance yourself from her and carry on doing what you’re doing.

MintyGreenDreams · 13/11/2022 20:48

Are you prettier than her by any chance? Sounds like she feels threatened that you're getting fit and will "outshine" her

baxterstockman · 13/11/2022 20:49

OP you are doing amazingly well. Ignore the horrible cow! After a serious health scare, I lost weight and now exercise a lot, and all my friends and family are nothing but proud of me and I get lots of lovely comments about how well I'm doing. Anyone who genuinely likes or cares about you would be complimentary not mean.

imnotthatkindofmum · 13/11/2022 20:52

Well when I was running just 3 times a week and 1 yoga session a week I was fit enough to run regular half marathons. She's taking out of her arse!

You sound like you're doing really well.

chimayrah · 13/11/2022 20:52

MintyGreenDreams · 13/11/2022 20:48

No I don't think so. You couldn't really compare us, we look totally different. She is tall, blonde and athletic and I am short, dark and more of an hourglass.

I always thought she was very pretty. I don't actually know what her problem is but you have all made me feel much better!

OP posts:
TicketToRideFan · 13/11/2022 20:54

You do way more than me, in fact you are inspiring me to up my game. Ignored her, she is being ignorant.

Godsavetheking2022 · 13/11/2022 20:55

Very bitchy

StaunchMomma · 13/11/2022 20:58

She saw a chance to be a cow and she took it.

This is all about her, not you. She put you down to make herself feel better.

Don't let her dent your resolve, OP.

She made a shitty choice to lash out but now you have the choice of how her pathetic words affect you.

SemperIdem · 13/11/2022 21:01

She’s a bitch.

You should be really proud of yourself for getting into, and maintaining, such a good routine.

Crazycatlady202020 · 13/11/2022 21:01

What you do sounds great and you should be proud of yourself. Ignore her rude comments

Trudij123 · 13/11/2022 21:02

Well because of you, I’m just re-uploading couch to 5k to do day 1 on my dog walk tomorrow…

StClare101 · 13/11/2022 21:08

She doesn’t want you to better yourself as she has you in the category of overweight relative. I bet she’s deeply insecure.

Fuck her. I wouldn’t be organising to spend time with her for a long while.

Congratulations on getting fit and healthy.
