Need Advice On Vaping

Recently, DH decided to try to stop smoking and I ordered him a vape kit and juice online.
Four years ago we both had a different kit and both hated it - we found it made us choke. It so happened that I succeeded in giving up smoking using nicotine patches and DH tried, but was unsuccessful. Both of us were unimpressed with the vape kits and we threw them out eventually.
Now, DH asked me to buy another one so that he could have another go. I was wary because I remembered how we'd both felt when we used the previous ones. DH thought that vape kits had probably evolved after four years and I figured it was worth another go.
(They've certainly gone up in price, anyway).

I got him one which cost about £40 and some juice with 11 mg nicotine in it, which was a further £11.

He cannot cope with it at all. Same thing as before - it makes him choke.
Is he doing something wrong? Can anyone give us any advice about this?

Too strong. Try magic mist cartridges and batteries

Yellowdahlia12 · 10/11/2022 13:37

Try 6mg liquid instead.

PeloFondo · 10/11/2022 13:37

Coughing isn't unusual at first
Inhale very gently
How many cigs was he on as that affects what nicotine level he needs

He was (still is) smoking 30 roll-ups a day.
He has given up trying with the vape kit for the moment.

He needs to use the nicotine salt juice rather than normal nicotine. It doesn’t give the throat hit that will be making him choke, it is smooth. Comes in 20mg, 10mg and 5MG if you can find it, but honestly start higher and work your way down or all he will do is go back to the fags.
I would also suggest a smaller pod kit rather than a larger kit which will give a harder “hit” (look at a Vaporesso xros 2 or an aspire Flexus for my personal recommendations)

I use a cheap vape off Amazon that's about £15 and use the small bottles of 6mg vape juice. Anything stronger than that gives me a headache. My DH had a more powerful vape but that was too much for me as it made me cough. Also make sure the coil is working properly and has been primed because that can give off a burnt taste. You can also get disposal vapes that are about a fiver and taste a bit better than reusable ones, so maybe he could try one of those to start with.

Too strong.

Try an aspire pockex - £20 on amazon.

PeloFondo · 10/11/2022 14:44

Ok I quit from 30 a day so he is going to probably need a decent amount of nicotine! I quit on 18mg but that was before nicotine salts existed

TheShellBeach · 10/11/2022 15:54

Thanks everybody. I have ordered a cheaper device and some nicotine salts.

Thanks. I hope that this is the answer. We had never heard of nicotine salts. Just ordered some.

I stopped smoking and moved to vapes about 6 months ago, I bought the elf bars (I know, not the best environmentally). They do catch a bit in your throat to start with but soon stops. If he's smoking 30 roll ups a day he will probably need to start on 20mg or he will have nicotine withdrawal

I don't disagree with this premise but if he cannot actually use the vape kit, he is no better off.
It seems to have been quietly discarded ATM.

Make sure the vape kit & coils work with nicotine salts as not all coils do!

MyCrumpetIsCold · 10/11/2022 16:31

What is the vape kit? There is a huge variation between devices - and how they’re supposed to be used - so without knowing what it is, it’s very difficult to say! Some are only designed to be used with low nicotine.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 10/11/2022 16:47

I prefer Nic salts too. I find the other kind too rough. I just use elf bars and recycle them - maybe get him to try one of those rather than investing in expensive kits to start with?

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 10/11/2022 16:52

You can get rechargeable elf bars with pods that are refillable with nic salt juices instead of pre-filled pods.

PinkButtercups · 10/11/2022 16:57

You need to go into an actual vape shop. They will help him choose the right amount. 11mg is quite strong.

Elieza · 10/11/2022 16:58

My mum gave up fags in favour of vaping.

Her advice is what the guy in the shop told her:

He said don’t smoke it like a fag. It’s not a fag.

Take small draws.

Expect to cough like crazy for three days.

You might want to time giving up fags over a period you’ll be at home so you can be near water if you choke a bit and need a drink and not be at work or whatever.

Day four you’ll notice it’s easier to take a drag. Your cough won’t be as bad.

After that it’ll be easier.

Good luck to everyone whose trying to give up.

PinkButtercups · 10/11/2022 16:58

Also those silly elf/geek bars don't buy. They're dangerous and you might as well just keep smoking if you're using them tbh.

LangClegsInSpace · 10/11/2022 17:04

One other thing to look at is the ratio of vegetable glycerine (VG) tp propylene glycol (PG) in the liquid.

The higher the proportion of PG, the harsher the vape. High VG liquids are much smoother but they kill coils quicker.

Beepops22 · 10/11/2022 17:06

@TheShellBeach try totally wicked products, the arc mini is a good one to start with. Go for the lowest strength liquid. I would suggest the 0.3mg in a mild flavor like vanilla or menthol.

To use, you have to breathe differently to how you would with a roll up or cig. You draw the vapour into your mouth and then inhale into your lungs. If you inhale straight into your lungs you will cough and splutter. Took me a while to figure it out but I was on vapes for years and ended up completely unable to smoke a roll ups after because I was so used to inhaling differently.

I have stopped now due after catching COVID I had a lot of issues so gave it up but would recommend totally wicked to anyone. They have stores nationwide that you can into for advice or you can just order online.

OatFox · 10/11/2022 17:09

Get him a Caliburn pod kit and nic salts in 10mg. Much much smoother.

Ironytheoppositeofwrinkly · 10/11/2022 17:28

I work in a vape shop (have done so for around 8yrs) and the amount of incorrect advice on here is shocking.
I'd suggest a little pod kit with salts, however 11mg is already salt nic, but if it's making him choke, I'd guess that you were trying to use it in a big sun ohm device. Vape shops are always the way forward for a new starter or someone unsure, a good one will always help you out without trying to rip you off.

Dangerous in what way?
