Is an oodie better than a dressing gown? šŸ¤”

Been seeing oodies mentioned a lot on here lately. I’m always looking for ways to stay warm without turning on the heating and currently wear my dressing gown in the evening when it’s coldest in the house… So my question is, is the oodie better than the dressing gown?

I have an Oodie and it's fantastically warm, sometimes too warm, but I can't do anything in it as there's just so much of it!

Also, I am constantly knocking over glasses of water with the voluminous sleeves and if I wash up in it, the front gets soaked. But for just sitting in, it's wonderful.

There is one negative.. I struggle to answer the door in mine, I feel like I'm wearing a fatsuit.. did it the other day and they took a photo of my parcel as proof of delivery, which they then emailed me and I saw myself in the photo like a massive behemoth covered in sloth print šŸ˜‚

I bought myself one in poundstretcher! It's a shop I never usually go in, I know I sound like a dick but I'm usually more John Lewis/ M&S, anyway, I went to poundstretcher as was looking for a plastic storage box and I saw a load out front, I saw the fleece hoodie thing and was surprised how thick and comfortable it looked, it was £25, so I bought one.... omg best purchase ever! Much warmer than dressing gown! Went back and bought DH one.. for the last week we've both had them on every evening! Love them!

I use a Kuddly. Purchased last year on MN recommendations. I bought one for all in our family and they appear to be on offer quite often so wouldn't need to buy full price.
It really is very warm but not uncomfortably so.
Great for WFH if you sit down a lot but, as one PP above mentioned, the hood is huge and annoying. I keep thinking of cutting it off. Also wouldn't wear it on video calls. But the it is easy enough to remove because the neck is wide so it doesn't mess up my hair.
When sitting down it does cover most of my legs which is useful.
Absolutely impossible to cook or do housework in it. Sleeves are huge and overall it is too wide for fast nimble activities.
I mean, I ain't no sexy goddess wearing this damn thing, but it is nice and warm and I'm very happy with it.

Dressing gowns are not on the same level of warmth for me. And the gap at the front doesn't help keep warm at all.

Doingmybest12 · 09/11/2022 07:40

I love dressing gowns and an oodie isn't long enough in my opinion. I like to feel I am swooshing about a bit and to be around to do jobs in the house with it on. Oodie is more for sitting about I think? No where near the same thing for me.

POTC · 09/11/2022 07:45

@Doingmybest12 you can get long length ones, my ds2 has one and it's down to his lower shins at 6ft!

POTC · 09/11/2022 07:51

We don't have genuine ones, if you want warm go for the double layer, I have this one amzn.eu/d/iabhCLW
DS have amzn.eu/d/cNBUI1G which is long but only single layer, warm enough for them

Laughing a lot at this.

dudsville · 09/11/2022 08:03

I don't have an oodie or this sort of fluffy robe, but surely the key differences are the absence of a belt and the potential to gape, so one is better for quick on/off between shower and dressing the other more suited to lounging. I'm getting my mum an oodie for Christmas as her house gets very cold.

The long one you mentioned has a Ā£3 voucher if you’re a prime member making it only Ā£20.99

I have dressing gown for after shower, oodie (cheap Primark knock off) for everything else. I wear it ALL the time. It's brilliant. Heating only been on three times so far and that's only to dry washing etc

Choconut · 09/11/2022 08:21

Etsy has oversize hoodies for about £16 if you want a cheap one and extra long hoodie blankets for £18. I have an oversize hoodie and I do everything in it as they have cuffs and love it - but I've only just seen the long ones and wish I had one of them now!

Flyingbye · 09/11/2022 08:23

@ErinAndTonic very jealous of your sloth print though! I love the real oodie prints but can't justify the cost.

It's a bit like wearing a duvet so definitely warmer, but with the limitations that come with that. I have a teddy fleece poncho thing from M&S which is also pretty warm for watching TV, but too flappy to do much in.

Tarkan · 09/11/2022 08:24

I have a wearable blanket from Lucy Locket Loves which is the same idea as an Oodie. It's super warm so as others have said, I don't tend to move around in it and just wear it when I'm sitting. I've also got a hooded blanket which you just wrap around yourself but there aren't arms so again best for sitting.

They've just announced wearable ones with a zip front so I'm very tempted to get one which u can then use as a mixture of a dressing gown and the wearable blanket. DH keeps stealing my wearable one anyway so another one would be handy.

Mirrorcell · 09/11/2022 08:29

I sometimes wear both 😁

Dh and i have primark ones and they are brilliant! It even gets so warm sometimes I have to remove them šŸ˜…

mondaytosunday · 09/11/2022 09:15

My son has a oodie knock off and wears it all the time. He's 19 - don't think he'd ever wear a dressing gown! An oodie looks like normal day clothes, just supersized.
I feel a bit odd and feel kinda undressed if I was in a dressing gown if not bed time or early morning.

PopcornChewingGum · 09/11/2022 09:31

An oodie newbie asks: what makes an oodie 'genuine' please?

Flyingbye · 09/11/2022 09:35

@PopcornChewingGum Oodie is a brand. Theirs are expensive but they have loads of funky prints. Other brands/own brands are just copies and often plainer.

Buzzinwithbez · 09/11/2022 09:45

How do you dry them? How do you keep them fluffy?
Anything my daughter has had in a similar fabric hasn't lasted very long before the pile has gone flat and tatty.

(Does anyone else worry about the amount of microplastic ending up in the waterways when they was them?)

Dreamstate · 09/11/2022 10:11

I bought this last year www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07VCFFVJX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It has button at the neck to hold it together but its great for sitting on sofa but also if I need to cook its open enough. I do take it off if i go to the bathroom though

yaboreme · 09/11/2022 10:14

If you aren't bothered about the brand. I'd recommend this one

https://www.dunelm.com/product/dreamscene-check-adult-oversized-blanket-hoodie-1000206586?defaultSkuId=30800906

They do different colours Bear

PopcornChewingGum · 09/11/2022 10:49

Ah, thank you @flyingbye. So like Uggs then? Think I'll stick to my dressing gown for now
