Socks and sliders...

..why?

Comfort? Trend?

My dad used to wear a pair of Dr Schol sandals with socks in the 1980's, and I distinctly remember my mum being embarrassed if he stopped to talk to the neighbours in them!

So where has this particular trend come from? The US I'm guessing.

My DS aged 11 wears this combo for context. Just 'because'...🤷‍♀️

Yep, US. I believe it’s to do with the glamorising of being arrested/imprisoned.

My 11 year olds are still firmly into crocks and socks, I've given up arguing with them.

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 29/10/2022 21:59

They've been a thing for teenagers for probably about 5 years but I still don't like it.

I also remember when it was really uncool to pull up (sports type) socks to mid calf height ...but that seems to be the current way to wear them.

runjy · 29/10/2022 22:06

It was a thing in the 90s, US sports people. Just come back again

yep think 90s Princess Di at the gym.

AnnieSnap · 29/10/2022 22:10

Personally, I love it. Pick nice socks and stylish slides. So comfy and look good. What’s not to love?

whokilledlizandseb · 29/10/2022 22:18

Fine around the house but in public - would not be caught dead. Awful look.

Rockbird · 29/10/2022 22:23

Looks absolutely bloody ridiculous. These kids will look back on themselves and be mortified the same way I am with my 80s photos.

ButterflyBiscuit · 29/10/2022 22:24

I like it when comfort trumps image!

TheChosenTwo · 29/10/2022 22:25

@KangarooKenny this made me chuckle 😂
I think the trend looks bloody Stupid personally but I’m very live and let live, would never tell anyone wearing it that I think it looks ridiculous.
but after you said that I do agree it gives off slightly ‘incarcerated’ vibes 😂😂

wibblewobbleball · 29/10/2022 22:25

@nonstoprenovation I am still sporting this look as I'm 9 months and it's all that fits BlushGrin

Sux2buthen · 29/10/2022 22:30

stylish slides?

Sparklingbrook · 29/10/2022 23:24

In the house or on the garden sort of ok. Out, out then no unless you’re on the beach maybe (minus socks)
If it’s so cold you need socks to keep your feet warm put some shoes on 🤷‍♀️

I can't pull my "ankle" socks up that far anyway because my calves are too muscular, so I have to fold them over.

I miss slouch socks.

I'm glad the days of pretending that you're not wearings socks have passed though. Socks slinking off your heel underfoot gets really annoying.

stylish slides?

In the eye of the beholder

Strangerthings4NW · 30/10/2022 00:15

Well it’s a fashion trend that many people wear! I like it and here’s a few examples of a famous (taramays25) person wearing socks and stylish sliders! She has 266k followers on Instagram so she’s doing something right.

runjy · 30/10/2022 00:24

famous person? 😆

They won't look or feel good in rain - and worse if there's any mud.
(This is born of experience of socks and gardening clogs, but will apply moreso to open toe sliders)

Laughingravy · 30/10/2022 01:51

Round these parts the teen girls finish off their best trendy outfits with that combo - often fluffy - and look like right buggers as a result. So it's a no from this jury. Not to mention why on earth would any rational human being pay £££ for a pair of little more than flip-flops because they're a brand.
Like my Gran always said 'don't you see some sights when you've not got your gun'.😱

Dartmoorcheffy · 30/10/2022 01:59

I wear socks and crocs. Absolutely don't give a toss what anyone thinks. My girl crush has always been amd akways will be Helena Bonham Carter who doesn't give a fuck either. Comfort over fashion any day. 😁
