Socks and sliders...

..why?

Comfort? Trend?

My dad used to wear a pair of Dr Schol sandals with socks in the 1980's, and I distinctly remember my mum being embarrassed if he stopped to talk to the neighbours in them!

So where has this particular trend come from? The US I'm guessing.

My DS aged 11 wears this combo for context. Just 'because'...🤷‍♀️

It’s fashion. We’ve all worn daft things (stilettos anyone? Massive bellbottoms? for it and at least this trend adds comfort rather than danger.

@BogRollBOGOF I was feeling nostalgic for the 80’s and found some shorter black slouch type socks in Primark. I think they look good with my Chelsea boots.
‘But I’d love a pair of the 80’s over the knee socks to slouch at the ankle !

DS will make a length argument for how cool this is. Especially if the slides are Yeezy slides apparently.

But he’s also considering growing a sheepdog mullet.

So I’m just going to gather photographic evidence for the future. 🤣

I had crap ideas as a teenager too.

BlueBar · 30/10/2022 07:07

I thought it came from footballers doing it, but they have a sensible reason for removing muddy boots and getting into sliders. Or they did when they started doing it.

Trends seem to hand around much longer now than they did when I was young. As a teen it always seemed that by the time I realised it was in, it was all over 😆

I wear socks and crocs. Absolutely don't give a toss what anyone thinks. My girl crush has always been amd akways will be Helena Bonham Carter who doesn't give a fuck either. Comfort over fashion any day. 😁

Helena Bonham Carter spends an awful lot of time and money on looking like she doesn't give a fuck 😆

It because prisoners can’t have laces, incase they hang themselves, so sliders are used.
‘It’s like the teenagers who have their jeans half way down their bum. Prisoners can’t have belts for the same reason. Like a pp said, it’s idealisation of prisoner status.

Haudyourwheesht · 30/10/2022 07:16

I agree they do look ridiculous but I am loving comfy fashion. Loose fit jeans, chunky boots, baggy sweatshirts and hoodies - just great. And no more ridiculous than teetering in 5 inch heels that will be killing your feet ten minutes after putting them on.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2022 07:46

Going back to the OP though... crocs and socks is (if not raining) a comfortable and sensible choice of footwear. I had no idea it was on trend when I was wearing mine in public (rather than for putting the bins out )on a boating holiday last month, perfect for that (except where too muddy). However, her DF was wrong to wear socks with Dr Scholl's - I wore them in the 70s, the shaped wooden soles of these 'exercise sandals' were intended to interact with your foot.

Sparklingbrook · 30/10/2022 08:14

Eww Crocs. Maybe for gardening in the summer (minus socks) but that’s it.

dudsville · 30/10/2022 08:23

Glamourising US prison life???!!! That's a bonkers idea. Slouchy socks and birkenstock arizonas are a long standing trend, and going back 100 yrs there was a trend for sports sandals and socks. It is a fabulous combination.

Strangerthings4NW · 30/10/2022 08:23

@ErrolTheDragon crocs are not sliders.. sorry.

I know, but people are talking about their youngsters wearing crocs and socks as well as crocs and sliders.

Tbh, that comment just screams moral panic about the things young people do.

i doubt the socks and sliders wearing 15 year olds of Barnsley are giving any thought to us prison life in their fashion choices.

Davethecat2000 · 30/10/2022 10:34

Yes I thought it was probably something to do with US prison culture, similar to your trousers hanging round your arse ( which just always looks really uncomfortable)

Nobody’s going to be making a quick getaway in socks and sliders 😂
How come a hamburger is also a ‘slider’ 🤔

PuttingDownRoots · 30/10/2022 10:43

Common look in ski hotels. Puts practicality (change out of boots in boot room, need something to walk through hotel in)
And at the rugby club (something easy to get on and off when take boots off)

I've given up understanding fashion trends

VladmirsPoutine · 30/10/2022 10:51

Surely it's just another trend the youth are engaging in before they move on to something else. I much rather that than the trend to fill their faces to the point they resemble Jigsaw.

AnnieSnap · 30/10/2022 12:13

ErrolTheDragon · 30/10/2022 01:23

They won't look or feel good in rain - and worse if there's any mud.
(This is born of experience of socks and gardening clogs, but will apply moreso to open toe sliders)

I wouldn’t wear them in rain, or mud!

Tinkers2021 · 30/10/2022 12:44

Footballers is where my son got it from. When he finishes a match, he takes his muddy boots off and puts on sliders - with his football socks. Also wears them to the match before putting his boots on.

Sparklingbrook · 30/10/2022 13:19

DS2 wore a pair of old Crocs in much the same way after football matches. I do not miss those muddy weekends one bit. Grin

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 30/10/2022 13:54

For ages I didn't know what sliders were called and referred to them as poolside slippers!Blush

AnnieSnap · 30/10/2022 17:30

@Whereisthehugeteddybear 😂🤣

Davethecat2000 · 30/10/2022 18:27

They were Dr Scholls in my dad's day
