Why do people talk on their phones through the speaker bit?

Is it just me, or is it really fucking weird and a bit annoying?

I see a lot of people these days shouting through the speaker bit, and hearing the person on the other end shouting back in a tinny, irritating manner.

Why don't they just use the phone in the normal way, ie hold it to your ear?

Yes this too - I rarely take calls in public. Stuff generally isn't that urgent

I don't normally take or make calls in public. It's annoying when I'm out and about doing something.
However, at home, I always talk on speaker. The reason is that if I have the phone to my ear, somehow the microphone does not pick up my voice correctly. It doesn't seem to be near my mouth if you see what I mean. If I get the angle of the phone between ear and mouth exactly right it works, otherwise the other person can*t hear me. I've had far too many calls with people saying "Can't hear you", "You're breaking up AGAIN" because the phone has slipped a couple of millimetres out of the exact position. So tedious
So yeah, I just have it on speaker when I am at home. Also avoids accidentally pressing mute or hang up with my ear and means I can look at my calendar while I'm talking as most calls are related to people wanting me to do something rather than just wanting a chat.
