Why do people talk on their phones through the speaker bit?

Davethecat2001 · 28/10/2022 20:27

Is it just me, or is it really fucking weird and a bit annoying?

I see a lot of people these days shouting through the speaker bit, and hearing the person on the other end shouting back in a tinny, irritating manner.

Why don't they just use the phone in the normal way, ie hold it to your ear?

This made me laugh. It is annoying OP. Sadly I am temporarily one of those cunts as DD flooded water over my phone and I can’t hear through my phone unless it’s on speaker!

Blueuggboots · 29/10/2022 07:32

This is one of the reasons I'm glad guns aren't legal!!!

Anotherbloodyusername2 · 29/10/2022 07:44

Stripeyrug · 28/10/2022 20:28

Because they're cunts.

Got it first time (disabilities aside, of course)

For attention and it does my head in. I'm not interested in the conversation.

WhatHaveIFound · 29/10/2022 07:52

My MIL does it because it works better with her hearing aid. I do it when I'm sat at my desk so that I can work and talk at the same time. Neither of us would do it in the street though.

Maybe the young people in the street like to add a bit of background noise?

WingBingo · 29/10/2022 07:54

Possibly could be that youngster’s don’t have the concept of landlines and they have never needed to put a phone to their ears.

still, I agree that they look like wankers, what ever the age.

WakingUpDistress · 29/10/2022 08:02

Because my phone is broken and otherwise people don’t hear me.

ItsHitTheFanNow · 29/10/2022 09:09

I do this a lot. It's because I often need to look up info that's on my phone during the call.

RewildingAmbridge · 29/10/2022 09:10

There was a woman at the hospital doing this yesterday, not on speaker but holding it as if it was then shouting I can't hear you speak up! Just put the phone to your ear!!!

RewildingAmbridge · 29/10/2022 09:11

She wasn't a youngster either, I'd say late fifties early sixties

RewildingAmbridge · 29/10/2022 09:15

I also hate voice notes. They are very controlling! I have to find somewhere quiet/private and take several minutes to listen to someone go on about something , without allowing me to have any input, that's not conversation. Texts are fine at you can read at your leisure and respond anywhere. I had a friend who would voice note me 5/6 minute long messages then get annoyed I couldn't instantly listen to them because I was working, cooking dinner, putting DS to bed etc. I could've glanced at a text in some of those circumstances or even had a chat on the phone (speaker when at home). The friendship fizzled out eventually

Fingernails4Cash · 29/10/2022 09:16

Because I'm a bit hard of hearing and sometimes I don't have my Bluetooth headset handy.
Can't use AirPods due to the shape of my lugholes, they just fall straight out

Cliffordthebigreddog · 29/10/2022 09:21

I’ve noticed this and I find it so cringe! I hate it! I think it’s an influence of the kardashians etc as they do it from what I’ve seen (I’ve not watched it ever, just seen clips)

Abracadabra12345 · 29/10/2022 09:23

PrincessSpanky · 28/10/2022 21:22

Fuck knows. So irritating!!!! I don't want hear the conversation. Just about everyone seems to do it.

I remember the old days, when people survived somehow without needing to be contactable when they went out. Odd I know. They even used landline phones inside their homes so no members of the public, or neighbours, heard their conversations.

There is something about the tinniness of the sound of speaker phones,

PeloFondo · 29/10/2022 09:24

KenAdams · 29/10/2022 00:00

So I don't get foundation on my phone. I mean, that would be the reason but I'm a millennial so obviously only take phone calls at a last resort.

That made me laugh
My boss "Pelo, did you use my phone? Because there's highlighter on it"

BlushGrin yep sorry

Ivealways wondered this. Theres a woman near us I see walking with a pram, a dog on a lead and then she bends over the pram handle so she can hold her phone out and talk. Ive always said she needs a pair of earphones with a mic attached, then she wouldnt have to bend over and would still have a hand rach for the dog and the pram. People are just a bit weird to not think of si.ple logical solutions

itsgettingweird · 29/10/2022 09:34

I've noticed this more and more lately.

I've started walking every evening for exercise and I walk with my friend through some quiet cycle/foot paths and through a town.

People are walking either have a public conversation through speaker or with ear phones in and so are loud!

I wondered if it's become more frequent or I'm just noticing it more as I'm out more!

LimitIsUp · 29/10/2022 09:45

Like some other posters, if I put the phone to my ear my face touches a mute or hold button on the call 🤷‍♀️

I try to walk away from others to take a call though as I don't want an audience

Angelofthenortheast · 29/10/2022 09:56

Pretty sure it comes from how they show phone calls on reality TV.

They do it on loudspeaker so the cameras can here, but then so many young people's main viewing is reality TV (the hills, kardashians, towie, made in Chelsea, Jersey shore - they all do it) - then everyone mindlessly copies.

I live in a studenty area and often hear them structure their conversions like reality tv too (as in, that manufactured scene where two people step aside from a group to discuss an issue relating to another member of the group)

FinallyHere · 29/10/2022 10:00

Headphones, people.

Bone conduction, open ear headphones mean I can hear everything around me but can also listen & speak on the phone at normal volume, as well as listen to music, podcasts, audio books etc without disturbing anyone.

Looking at you DH is is getting ver deaf and needs the TV volume up at max but has not idea of the impact on anyone else. Sigh.

greenhousegal · 29/10/2022 10:16

We don't need to speak to people all day every day in every situation/surrounding. Whatsapp, text work fine too. Personally I don't take calls when out and about as I feel like an idiot talking out loud in a crowded supermarket or wherever.

I never use the speaker either. I couldn't.... too embarrassed for others to hear the conversation, and I'd be mortified if the caller wasn't aware they are on speaker and blurt out something that shouldn't be said in public!

Constant communication about rubbish things is such a time waster anyway.

roarfeckingroarr · 29/10/2022 10:23

I do it at home or if I'm out and there's nobody around. I don't like having to hold the phone to my ear. I don't do it around other people because I'm not a narcissist or a wanker.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 29/10/2022 10:30

I only make calls in public if I absolutely have to & rarely have headphones with me. If I get a voice note when I’m out I normally text the person back explaining that I won’t be able to listen until later & asking them to text me anything that can’t wait.

Davethecat2000 · 29/10/2022 11:01

Interesting perspectives.. thanks all.

Had never constantly it was a sign of the times.

Now on to my next question....

Aware that this is a potential solution but as it doesn't trouble me why bother
