Why do people talk on their phones through the speaker bit?

Davethecat2001 · 28/10/2022 20:27

Is it just me, or is it really fucking weird and a bit annoying?

I see a lot of people these days shouting through the speaker bit, and hearing the person on the other end shouting back in a tinny, irritating manner.

Why don't they just use the phone in the normal way, ie hold it to your ear?

My wing nuts like to work the controls and invariably end up hanging up on people mid conversation. That said, I only use speaker when I am by myself. If at work or in public, the caller is advised my ears could hang up at any time, don't take it personally...

OliveKitten · 28/10/2022 22:50

It's a dickish thing to do. Barring disabilities it's just selfish and ignorant.

willowstar · 28/10/2022 22:57

My mum does this all the time, she is in her 70s, no hearing troubles whatsoever. She doesn't tell the people she is talking to that they are on speaker and that everyone can hear them. I really have no idea why she does it but I am very guarded when I speak to her as I know that others can hear everything.

Because phones aren't phones anymore - they're mini computers that you just happen to be about to make calls on,.almost as a historical relic from their previous use.

They aren't the right / comfortable shape to go against your head because they're designed to be looked at / typed on. Sad but true - that's why I use headphones or the home phone for calls as they fit human dimensions.

Because they're cunts.

😂😂😂😂

Rockbird · 28/10/2022 23:24

And yet people will look at you like you're a twat when you talk into your AirPods. You really can't win.

LimitIsUp · 28/10/2022 23:50

Mostly to wind people like you up
Op

So I don't get foundation on my phone. I mean, that would be the reason but I'm a millennial so obviously only take phone calls at a last resort.

andmostofallyouletyourselfdown · 29/10/2022 00:04

Some phones have crap audio. Not everyone gets on with earbuds or they've mislaid them. A lot of people have some degree of hearing loss. Like, millions. Some are just being noisy whatsits, it was always thus whether mobiles or just talking loudly on the bus or in the pub for no reason. You can't really tell which is which though.

andmostofallyouletyourselfdown · 29/10/2022 00:07

I don't want hear the conversation

In prior decades could we not hear everyone's conversations going on around us in the pub, workplace, shop, bus, train, street, garden... though? It's not like talking has just been invented is it?

Thighdentitycrisis · 29/10/2022 00:21

This isn’t a thing so much in my area anymore because phone snatching is rife.
Its risky to take your phone out on the street

HappyAsASandboy · 29/10/2022 00:22

I use the speaker rather than holding it to my ear because I can't hear it without it being on speaker. I used to be able to but can't now and can't afford a new phone.

I try to avoid using my phone in public, but sometimes it is unavoidable so I try to be quick.

My parents wear hearing aids and they can only hear me if I speak to them hands free.

Same for me, I am hard of hearing. I can't wear earphones as constantly have DC with me.

Although everyone in my life knows not to call me. Send a text like a normal person. Grin
If I get a phone call, I panic that something has happened...

Bumply · 29/10/2022 01:10

I rarely use my iPhone as a phone, but when I do it's usually speaking to customer services or booking something and I need to be able to look up other information or type my credit card or reference number into it. I'll then have it in speaker mode so I can still hear the conversation.
This is in the privacy of my own home.
I rarely actually phone people just for a conversation and almost never outside

This really made me smile.

Blablablaaaaa · 29/10/2022 03:53

i have to as otherwise I can’t hear a sodding thing.

MightyOaks · 29/10/2022 04:34

I have to do this as I have a hormonal issue which makes my face sweat profusely. If I put my phone anywhere near my face, the screen would get wet. Also I can’t hear very well

Krabapple · 29/10/2022 04:44

This drives me mad! People talking like this also tend to be louder. Fair enough in private but on the bus: train in a cafe or shop I don’t want to hear every detail of someone’s shouted conversation so loud I can barely hear the person next to me.
have also heard people having quite personal, conversations littered with foul language shouted to the entire room as well. Seemingly oblivious that everyone can hear.

Krabapple · 29/10/2022 04:46

Stripeyrug · 28/10/2022 20:28

Because they're cunts.

Lol - couldn’t agree more. I’d most add the word selfish to your summary.

MsBucket · 29/10/2022 04:53

Davethecat2001 · 28/10/2022 20:31

I can kind of get it if you have your hands full, but if you're walking solo down the street, or on the tube, no one needs to hear your conversation. I notice it's youngish people that seem to do this more.

Is this what is now referred to as Main Character Energy/Syndrome? I’ve been quite curious about this terminology.

Worriedaboutethics · 29/10/2022 05:10

@Davethecat2001

because they are ignorant idiots

TriceratopsRocks · 29/10/2022 05:20

Personally I'm convinced that everyone who holds their phone like this is a closet Trekkie, and is pretending they are communicating with Captain Kirk. I'll be disappointed if that isn't completely true!

Nowheretoogo · 29/10/2022 06:29

i think it’s because YouTube/tik-Tok have videos that say phones close your ears causes brain tumours.

hooksb · 29/10/2022 06:38

It's young people I see and hear doing it too. (Including the teens and tweens in my family circle).
I put it down to the fact they record voice notes far more than they have a proper phone conversation. Not just a quick voice note but full on, back and forth conversing via voice notes but they will rarely actually call each other. So on the odd occasion they are on a call, they don't even think to hold the phone up to their ear.

And some young people I see/hear out and about are having those annoying voice note conversations on the go!

Bournetilly · 29/10/2022 06:42

My old phone only worked on speaker so I just got into a habit of only using it on speaker. If I was somewhere very public I wouldn’t answer it though.
