The end of Twitter? Elon Musk owns it now

00100001 · 28/10/2022 08:02

Do you think Twitter will die the death? Or go from strength to strength?

I think Elon is a prat and will soon come to realise that moderation is needed.

He sounds like Trump going on about 'free speech' and how he wanted to make his own Social Media platform where anyone can utilise hate free speech

Yep it's done. Will just become a far right platform now, offensive under the guise of "free speech".

00100001 · 28/10/2022 08:26

It will be interesting to see if it bombs or not...

OP posts:
00100001 · 28/10/2022 08:28

Maybe it will just pootle along and no sweeping changes actually made.

It's easy to say 'me, a billionaire, should be able to say things like "just work harder" to poor people '.... So therefore, whoooooo free speech.

But when it comes down to it, I don't think racism, threats sexual assaults, child sex abuse, rape, violence etc are going to be allowed to stay if he wants a viable product making billions!

CrunchyCarrot · 28/10/2022 08:37

I think he's going to find out the hard way that he might need to rethink his views!

My Twitter is a funny informative place.
Musk has some advertising ideas I'm not sure I'll like, too.

An obvious income stream (has Twitter ever made a profit?) is to charge per tweet. Say 1p for commenting on existing tweet, 2p for retweets & 5p for generating brand new tweets. You'd deposit £10 and see how long that lasted. DMs could be free. These rates could apply for the first 30 tweets (in each category) made each month, with higher tariff (say triple the prices in each tariff band) to apply for tweets #51-200, and 201+. You'd buy the ability to amplify your tweet (would come near the top of feed for your followers).

I might not have the amounts right, maybe they should be a bit higher. Main thing is that charging would go a long way towards reducing misinformation and reducing impulsive bots, abuse & prat comments, too. All without inhibiting "free speech" because the amounts would be trivial for anyone who can afford the technology , yet disrupt profit calculations (not profitable enough) for the misinformation & hate purveyors.

No-one is going to pay per tweet, when Instagram /Snapchat etc exists for free...

cakeorwine · 28/10/2022 09:43

I don't know his idea of free speech will tie into the digital online safety bills coming through various Parliaments - as they seem to clash.

JennyForeigner · 28/10/2022 09:44

Twitter is the only social I'm on because it's public anyway, so I dunno, I find it easier to manage my engagement and privacy. I just got fed up with Facebook getting mixed up with work and and feeling like I was inviting people in as friends when I wanted to keep it professional. Never missed them. Twitter conversely has been great professionally because I engage on a gentle laid back daily basis with astonishingly clever people who lead in my area.

But now I'm done with us. Musk is a dick, I refuse to be part of anything that would re-enable Trump and you can bet his 'free speech' bollocks won't apply to the values I hold. MRAs only, and honestly, there has always been a really shitty background hum on twitter of mainly male arseholes who lecture and dismiss and never bloody read what you've written. It was already tedious enough to be marginal. This just tips it to no thanks.

MarshaBradyo · 28/10/2022 09:48

I don’t use it although I know there’s some good stuff on there which gets shared but also a cesspit at times.

I don’t know what will happen to it, but a fair bit of talk re Trump returning to it - which was his main platform so we’ll see what happens with that

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 28/10/2022 09:55

@lljkk nice basic idea but I would suggest that original content should be priced either positively or negatively according to its "Ratio" (proportion of likes and retweets vs replies) - original content that gets loads of likes and retweets should actually be paid such that the tweeter gets 20% of the revenue generated from all the likes and retweets, but stuff that gets a bad ratio with lots of people commenting (arguing back) and few likes get charged up to 20p proportionally to how bad the ratio is. This would encourage people to generate thoughtful and constructive ways to contribute to public discourse and discourage posts that are designed to anger and upset others.

badbaduncle · 28/10/2022 09:55

Twitter is a sewer of misogyny, can it get worse?

00100001 · 28/10/2022 09:57

Maybe it will go the way of "Truth Social" and be banned from app stores for lack of moderation etc ha ha ha

OP posts:
Tired2tired · 28/10/2022 09:58

Pay to tweet or pay based on ratio would be the absolute death of twitter.

Yes it can.

Imagine all the racist, homophobic, sexually depraved and horrific content that might be allowed to stay....

I’m on a wait and see basis. Love twitter, I ignore the bad stuff and engage with the good stuff. Not sure where I’ll go if it gets too bad.

ArcticSkewer · 28/10/2022 10:02

And further down 'active threads' is a thread about Maya being banned from twitter for posting about safeguarding children.

Twitter has its own idea of what 'free speech' should look like. And it couldn't care less about misogyny for starters

"Free speech" on big social media platforms has certainly not been free and has had some rather peculiar and inconsistent boundaries on censorship.

NiceTwin · 28/10/2022 10:10

Never bought into Twitter, have no interest in randomer's thoughts in 140 characters, or whatever number it is now.

The only press I.see about it is bad press.

NotDavidTennant · 28/10/2022 10:12

People love to get themselves into a froth, but a bet in a year's time this will be seen as a non-event.

FortunesFavour · 28/10/2022 10:18

Well it’s hardly been a bastion of free-speech, responsible moderation and impartiality to date has it? Just changing one massively biased model for another.

PronounssheRa · 28/10/2022 10:23

00100001 · 28/10/2022 09:58

Twitter already allow men to post dick pics etc on twitter, while pedophiles can be fairly open displaying their age of attraction in bios 🤮

Twitters current moderation policy is a mess.

Women obviously get banned for talking about safeguarding, especially if they mention the emperor is stark naked

PerkingFaintly · 28/10/2022 10:24

Yeah, considering how he used his power to try to destroy that poor cave diver for the terrible crime of <gasp> telling Musk he was being an idiot...

Musk has done and is doing some excellent work (batteries, Starlink for Ukraine), but his ability to be a jerk and to damage other people as he thrashes around is unlimited.

vera99 · 28/10/2022 13:07

He is reported that he will let Trump back on the platform, he is a backdoor mouthpiece for Putin in flying "peace kites" and he has Giga-factory in Shanghai and is tweeting vaguely conspiracy tweets. My guess is he wants Trump back - helps to broker "peace" with Russia and China and is left free unencumbered to play with his rockets and projects. The alt-right is going mental with joy today.

It's absolutely disgusting on there now. Not sure how it could be much worse.

GarfieldsAunty · 28/10/2022 13:31

"I wish I'd spent more time scrollin", said no-one on their death bed, ever. If Twitter dies, it will be no bad thing, in my opinion.

Thankfully, using such a cesspit of a platform isn't mandatory, regardless of how awful it will (most likely) become.
