The end of Twitter? Elon Musk owns it now

00100001 · 28/10/2022 08:02

Do you think Twitter will die the death? Or go from strength to strength?

I think Elon is a prat and will soon come to realise that moderation is needed.

He sounds like Trump going on about 'free speech' and how he wanted to make his own Social Media platform where anyone can utilise hate free speech

"I wish I'd spent more time scrollin", said no-one on their death bed, ever. If Twitter dies, it will be no bad thing, in my opinion.

Thankfully, using such a cesspit of a platform isn't mandatory, regardless of how awful it will (most likely) become.

I'll be scrolling is there an afterlife and looking for the most upvoted Quora answer and telling my family about the funeral "How much !!!! I'm not paying for that!". One of his 7 children is a boy with Grimes is called X Æ A-Xii - he was banned from calling him X Æ A-12 which was his first choice. I think he is some off the spectrum highly functioning genius with some very weird views.

balalake · 28/10/2022 13:43

Hopefully it will decline, as there will be those who leave the platform if it has minimal or no moderation.

MarshaMelrose · 28/10/2022 13:53

Will just become a far right platform now, offensive under the guise of "free speech".

Is the right more offensive than the left, though, with their diktat that only what they think is acceptable and everything else is offensive.

Wonnle · 28/10/2022 14:20

Musk is an attention seeking BELL END of the highest order

Blackbirdblue30 · 28/10/2022 14:29

Massive job loss in the staff too- he's allegedly going to cut the workforce by 75%. My friend works there and is pretty low today. The poor people!

Grimes was the idiot who came up with that name. He also has more than 7 children. He has IVF twins with a Neuralink employee. He's also allegedly the biological father of Amber Heard's baby.

People love to get themselves into a froth, but a bet in a year's time this will be seen as a non-event.

I doubt anything noticeable will even change.

picklemewalnuts · 28/10/2022 14:40

I'm pretty sure it will be more even handed. Now, some people are removed while those who threaten them get to stay.

I suspect it will get very rough, then will settle down a bit.

I don't know what he'll do about fact checking. That will be interesting.

Tinner01 · 28/10/2022 14:57

We are constantly told that billionaires have little liquid cash, all assets, shares etc. yet Musk can purchase Twitter for $44 billion? Imagine if he had donated that money to a worthy cause.

MintyFreshOne · 28/10/2022 15:04

Good for Elon. I was suspended for saying that intersex was a physical problem while transgenderism was a mental health problem. Since TRAs always like to conflate the two …

BoneAppleTee · 28/10/2022 15:07

Has it not been a vile far left platform for such a long time. The sooner it dies a death the better. Many high profile cases where GC tweeters have ended up being arrested for saying biology over gender and raising the issue of the erasure of sex segregation in private spaces and sports. About time the plating field was levelled, or demolished entirely would be my preferred outcome.

vera99 · 28/10/2022 16:18

Trump lying as ever is happy.

TRUTH SOCIAL has become somewhat of a phenomena. Last week it had bigger numbers than all other platforms, including TikTok, Twitter, Facebook, and the rest. It also looks and works better to my eye. I am very happy that Twitter is now in sane hands, and will no longer be run by Radical Left Lunatics and Maniacs that truly hate our country. Twitter must now work hard to rid itself of all of the bots and fake accounts that have hurt it so badly. It will be much smaller, but better. I LOVE TRUTH!

KenAdams · 28/10/2022 08:16

Yep it's done. Will just become a far right platform now, offensive under the guise of "free speech".

Well, it would make a change if it did!

vera99 · 28/10/2022 16:24

And the ex-President of Russia Medvedev who is still allowed an account has tweeted in support of Elon with a rider... weird old world.

lljkk · 28/10/2022 21:39

No-one is going to pay per tweet, when Instagram /Snapchat etc exists for free...

The institutions, journalists & scientists I follow on Twitter aren't on Snapchat. or Instagram. I guess they could go there, but that's the same scenario as Twitter dying a death anyway, right?

Twitter at moment has the advantage that it's "the" breaking news platform. And £10/2 months would be very cheap for most people/tweeters.

Twitter is the only social I'm on

Mumsnet forums is a kind of social media.

GrimDamnFanjo · 29/10/2022 16:30

Hmm I feel very conflicted.
In my mind I support free speech, but then when I think about it, I don't want dangerous people to have a platform. Which isn't the essence of free speech I know!
I am hoping that some banned feminists can make a come back.

FortunesFavour · 29/10/2022 16:33

That’s the million dollar question isn’t it…who gets to decide who or what is dangerous or benign.

travellinglighter · 29/10/2022 17:23

We all like free speech but exercising your right to free speech comes with the realisation that there may be consequences for your words. The classic example is yelling fire in a crowded theatre. If people are hurt in the stampede then you are responsible and should be held responsible.

Twitter as a platform allows you to exercise that right in a way that could mean you aren’t held responsible. For example, which tweet was the one that finally pushed the mentally Ill person to kill himself. Or, which tweet was the one that finally convinced someone to go carry out a racist/homophobic attack.

Social media of all types has an effect, it almost certainly affected Brexit. Given it’s affect then all forms of social media need to be fairly moderated. I dislike censorship but challenging lies and hatred doesn’t really count.

Hes sacking 50% of staff. Today. God knows what his business model is and why he bought it.

Those poor people

Major advertisers have pulled out temporarily.

Audi, VW, General Mills, Pfizer etc

The platform is just going to be full of spamming now.

No doubt he'll be trying to sell it in a couple of months ...

I only do MN and Twitter.
There are similarities. There is poison and nastiness on both or you can hide in a fluffy corner.
My Twitter is all gardening, sheep farming and art.

Emily1583 · 04/11/2022 21:42

Twitter is easily the most toxic social media platform. Pretty much every comments section decends into arguments with abuse giving out. If Twitter disappears then it would be no sad loss.

OminousBirdAWing · 04/11/2022 21:49

00100001 · 04/11/2022 21:10

This will get worse (if/before it gets better)

He can have 'free speech' but the more free it is, the more toxic it gets, the more advertisers will give it a wide berth.

And so far Twitter only makes money from ads. I dunno how they monetise a bunch of hate speech megaphones all shouting at each other if the brands stay away.
