The end of Twitter? Elon Musk owns it now

Do you think Twitter will die the death? Or go from strength to strength?

I think Elon is a prat and will soon come to realise that moderation is needed.

He sounds like Trump going on about 'free speech' and how he wanted to make his own Social Media platform where anyone can utilise hate free speech

I always wondered if ‘Twitter’ was rhyming slang for something…

Mosik · 04/11/2022 21:37

I only do MN and Twitter.
There are similarities. There is poison and nastiness on both or you can hide in a fluffy corner.
My Twitter is all gardening, sheep farming and art.

True, but MN isn't full of Dick enlarging ads,. Scams, nazi propaganda, Fw:fw:Fw:fw:few: share this...., Hot blonde babes in your area, You'll never believe what x says....

He only owns a majority share in it not 100% of it

With the big advertisers pulling the plug it could well end up being waste of his money , oh dear never mind eh !

NightFright · 05/11/2022 09:16

$8 a month to buy the blue tic!

Lots of celebs saying they will quit!

Naunet · 05/11/2022 10:13

Yep, all the paedos, misogyny, death threats and racism currently on there is just fine, it’s free speech that’s the big problem. 🤣

itsnotdeep · 05/11/2022 10:19

I only use twitter for work, so don't need to see any of the far right or indeed any other tweets I don't want to see. It's a valuable tool in my industry.

I wouldn't pay per tweet, but might pay a monthly subscription bill. I suspect though that another platform will come into existence and everyone decent will just migrate there. Musk must realise that all social media is pretty fickle and platforms fall out of fashion as new ones start.

I loathe everything he stands for, and hope he loses a lot of money!

RedRiverShore2 · 05/11/2022 10:21

I only use it to get in touch with companies to complain as that or Facebook is often the only way and I am not having a Facebook account, so never really look at twitter posts, I won't be happy if it goes.

RedRiverShore2 · 05/11/2022 10:22

Isn't Twitter a left leaning site like Mumsnet

AnyFucker · 05/11/2022 10:25

Hopefully. My life has not been enhanced in any way by Twitter.

RedRiverShore2 · 05/11/2022 10:31

If you haven't got Facebook sometimes Twitter is the only way to get in touch with companies like BG

roarfeckingroarr · 05/11/2022 11:04

Twitter was a cesspit where TRAs threatened women with rape and violence with impunity.

I can't see how new ownership can make it any worse.

roarfeckingroarr · 05/11/2022 11:06

@RedRiverShore2 it's very much of the left

Strong agree! I just said on another thread that the politically dubious cess pit that is Twitter - who ban GC feminists but allow disgusting porn to stand - needed a massive shake up and I am glad that someone with enough money decided to do it.

00100001 · 28/10/2022 09:58

Yes it can.

Imagine all the racist, homophobic, sexually depraved and horrific content that might be allowed to stay....

It already does, and frankly the misogyny left to stand doesn't speak well of the quality of moderation anyway does it?

I've reported tweets which deliberately faked tweets from well known posters (with the link to the original tweet) in order to whip up hostility to the original poster and had the reports rejected for not being against the rules.
The manipulation of feeds over the past year has reduced its usability and value for many users rather than driving content.

Bottom line - Twitter loses money, it always has done. It has run on the tech boom of investment on the promise of money tomorrow but has never delivered. Whether or not Musk's cuts/changes can turn that around is debatable but Twitter has been in trouble for a long time.

roarfeckingroarr · 05/11/2022 13:03

@LondonWolf absolutely agree.

All this fear of "the far right"... why didn't these people care when GC women were being threatened daily with rape, mutilation and death?

Annierosetexas · 05/11/2022 13:14

At the moment you can be banned from
Twitter, as many women have been, for stating that women do not have penises and men cannot give birth. Whilst tweets from MRAs who threaten women with rape and violence are left to stand.

I was once doxxed on Twitter by a TRA who published all of my personal details. Me and about 50 other women complained and all received identical messages saying that the doxxing did not contravene their community standards.

As far as I’m concerned any measures that Musk introduces to address the abuse and hatred of women on his site can only be a good thing.

I think social media in general has been a detriment to society. It just breeds gossip, abuse, echo chambers, misinformation and division. Twitter certainly ticks all those. I've also already ditched Facebook - my real friends and family are on my WhatsApp. I don't need to read people I went to school with and never seen since preaching about politics or being bombarded with clickbait news articles about Katie Price and Philip Schofield....

I think Kate Winslet has recently given up social media suggesting that people will find themselves in a happier state of mind if you ditch social media, and I tend to agree with her on that.

LesterBiggott · 05/11/2022 14:42

I think the chances of a mass exodus from twitter is similar to the amount of people who swore they would leave the UK after Brexit, but didn't.

Twitter will be fine. And I'm glad that Elon has taken it over and booted out the power crazy children.

Emily in many ways I agree with you, but the other side of that is that for instance the uprising in Iran would have been impossible without social media for many reasons, not just me saying that but I've heard Iranian activists interviewed making exactly that point.
I think it's both a force and forum for good and a force and forum for evil, because human beings contain both and we are the creators of all content, in the end.

00100001 · 05/11/2022 16:22

It will be interesting to see what Twitter is like this time next year and if the likes of TikTok will grow and grow, because they're paying their content creators, rather than charge them!

I've never seen "Dick enlarging ads,. Scams, nazi propaganda, few: share this...., Hot blonde babes in my area" on Twitter. None of it. Not certain if I've seen the precise phrase "You'll never believe what x says...."

My twitter feed is a funny informative huggable place.

In contrast, My MN would be hugely nicer if I could filter away & never see the misandry, the hysteria, the self-pity, & the "experts know nothing" claims.

Because I'm sad... I just figured out which account I follow has the most followers. CNN news. I'm also realising how few tweets I see from most the accounts I follow. Intriguing!!! Like... can't recall last time I noticed one from CNN, lol.

It's the blind people describing an elephant when people describe what their Twitter is like. We're all correct & we're all wrong.

00100001 · 05/11/2022 19:38

I'm saying if moderation went down hill on twitter we'd see all those things.

A moderated site is then reason we aren't seeing those kind of things
.

Oh yeah it's useful for situations like that, but I'm surprised social media isn't surpressed China-style in places like Iran. I don't particularly like how the Ukraine war is being played out social media with people celebrating tank's and jets being blown up. It's someone being killed they are celebrating, someone who probably didn't ask to go to war.

Iamgu · 06/11/2022 06:16

Twitter has plenty of nazi propaganda, dick enlarging posts, porn, scams etc that haven't been removed pre or post Elon, but a larger increase post Elon along with racist, dog whistle usernames that could easily be blocked be aren't. It's mostly the follow system that stops most people seeing it, as you see who you follow and similar things to that.

Advertisers may have some sway?
It seems to me that just like this site, advertisers are the somewhat hidden power movers and shakers.
