To start a thread for those of us on baby night shift?

Hi all,

First night on duty, forgot how lonely it can be whilst the worlds asleep so I thought I'd start a thread instead of online shopping Grin

I thought we can talk about what we're doing to past the time, just chit chat, recommend tv shows/books whatever we want.

So far tonight I've watched senior year, not sure if I'd recommend it though, it did the job an easy watch but meh.

I also tried vampire diaries and not sure if it's because it's a product of it's time or really marketed towards teenagers but I found it a bit cringe, does it get better??

I can't sleep as baby is on my chest, she seems really refluxy and I've changed her twice due to being sick everywhere but she's settled nicely on me so I'll leave her to it.

I am not on baby night shift, but on work night shift and It's very quiet! Happy to have a bit of a chat. Do you have any plans for the weekend?

I wish I could share baby duty with you-been ages since I held a baby!

Tezco · 28/10/2022 04:30

All is welcome!

I just thought people might be busy at work haha but hopefully the shift goes quick for you.

It DH's 30th birthday today and we did have plans but I went into spontaneous labour on Wednesday at 36+4 which ended in a c section so plans out of the widow Grin but beautiful new baby haha I keep joking that I got him the best birthday gift ever.

What about you??

Congratulations on your new baby 💕

My 13 month old woke at 3am and seemed wide awake, tried for an hour to settle him again before giving up and going to the lounge. I’m sitting in the sofa while he plays making little plastic farm animals walk on me 😂

Feeling a bit deflated as his sleep has been so much better lately 😕

What time is you DH taking over baby shift? Will you be able to get some sleep?

Stade197 · 28/10/2022 04:50

Congrats on the new baby!

I'm up with my 14 month old, he woke up at 3.30am and is wide awake so he is playing with his toys whilst I'm trying to eat his chocolate buttons super quietly because if he hears the packet rustle I will have to share them 😅

babysharksb1tch · 28/10/2022 04:53

Joining! My 12 month old was up at 3, my 3 year old then wet the bed and can't get back to sleep. He's been up for nearly two hours now, I'm going to have one really cranky child for nursery 😬

Tezco · 28/10/2022 04:56

I've also got a 21 month old and I've been there haha it's a good job they're cute isn't it.

Hopefully off the "shift" at 8 when toddler gets up but honestly I might be cheeky and ask him to get up at 7 - we went into hospital 1am Wednesday morning and left like 4pm yesterday and I think in all the time I've had about 20 minutes sleep - they really bug you at the hospital don't they? Like I know they have to but I can barely keep my eyes open - I've moved baby back into the bassinet and listening for any reflux in case I do fall asleep but I think it's the pain from the section and all the baby love hormones keeping me awake now

Currently feeding a baby! Congratulations on your baby OP. Are you still in hospital?

Eek3under3 · 28/10/2022 04:57

oops cross posted and see you are home :)

Almondcroissant12 · 28/10/2022 05:02

It’s definitely a good job they are cute ☺️

Nice to know there are a few of us awake but I would rather we were all getting some sleep!

You must be exhausted @Tezco sorry you are in pain as well, hopefully little onde settles okay in the bassinet and you can get some rest too.

northernlola · 28/10/2022 05:06

Up feeding my 4 month old who has always been a poor sleeper! Hi everyone ☺️

I did have a 3 hour chunk at the start of the night which is unheard of for us. So actually feel well rested after that. Baby has been super fussy ever since though. I don't watch TV during the night but maybe I should start!?

sjxoxo · 28/10/2022 05:07

Can I join! I’m away visiting family with my 9 mo who normally is a brilliant sleeper but this week has woken up at least twice a night.. I’m over it! Tonight it’s been once but I’m terrible with no sleep and really struggling after several nights In a row. He’s gone from 8.30pm until 4.15am tonight but now wise awake. You’d think nature would know we’re all better off after a full nights sleep and design it that way! x

Oh god! Well glad your baby is here safe and well! Did all go okay? And congratulations, a newborn and a 21 month old-I can imagine you're exhausted!

I love night shift actually (I WFH). It's quiet normally so I get all my boring admin things done, housework etc as long as I am awake and here for any calls (I am a helpline worker) all is fine. I am going out for dinner on Saturday but other than that just relaxing.

whatasillybilly · 28/10/2022 05:22

I'm awake for the millionth time feeding my four week old. My older child was a terrible sleeper and I was hoping for a magic sleeping baby this time round but clearly isn't to be! I sit on my phone during feeds or read my kindle. This too shall pass, right? I so miss my sleep! Also hate never knowing what the night ahead holds.

CrabbyCat · 28/10/2022 05:33

Congratulations on the baby!

I've been awake for the last couple of hours with my 3 year old. We're away, and he has insomniac tendencies even at home - the change in routine seems to have properly upset his sleep. Trying not to think about how tired I'm going to be today.

ForgottenNurseryRhymes · 28/10/2022 06:24

Motherland on Netflix (I think) or working moms was made for the 3am club.
Sending love and congratulations!

Tezco · 28/10/2022 15:52

My eyes were in the back of my head and I gave in and woke DH up at 10 to 7, couldn't cope anymore Grin

Hope everyone has managed some sleep and feels a bit more rested.

I'll be back on here tonight no doubt WineWine wonder what mischief I can get up to tonight haha (no mischief really just feeding and changing a baby every three hours haha)

OP posts:
whatasillybilly · 29/10/2022 01:43

@Tezco every three hours sounds amazing right now my baby is currently waking hourly and taking over an hour to get to sleep! 😭😭😭😭 The sound of my partner gently sleeping next to me is quite enraging!

Tezco · 29/10/2022 01:52

I spoke too soon, we've been every 2 hours tonight, an hour feeding (she's late prem so takes a bit to get an oz down her, she's very windy haha) and then takes a bit to settle - I can hear DH snoring from upstairs - must be nice Grin

She's only two days old so it may change again yet, forgot how hard the night shift can be!

Congratulations!! A brand new baby is just so squishy and special.

I’ve been up feeding my 7 month old. It’s his first night in his own bedroom, hopefully he’ll sleep better there. He’s not slept for longer than 4 hour stretch since about 4 months and I’m back at work full time whilst still doing all the night feeds (breastfeeding). I’m knackered!

CurbsideProphet · 29/10/2022 02:02

Hi 👋🏻
Currently breastfeeding my nearly 15 day old baby 🙂
His tongue tie means he takes in too much air and it gets trapped, so we're in a cycle of feeding and winding. Last night he settled for 2.5 hours at 2.30am, so 🤞🏻 for the same tonight. Hoping the tongue tie will be snipped on Tuesday. The poor little guy will be much happier afterwards.

YukoandHiro · 29/10/2022 02:08

Congratulations on your new baby! Those early nights and long but special.

Can I join if Im on toddler night shift? My 2yo has an awful chest cold and im holding her upright to prevent wheezing and help her cough. She's too heavy and long to sleep easily on my shoulder now!

We also moved house today so everything is chaos and I keep expecting the 5yo to wake up and forget and get upset wondering where the hell she is 😂

I'm definitely too wired to sleep myself

mrssunshinexxx · 29/10/2022 02:30

Fully recommend motherland over binged it this week so so funny

mondaytosunday · 29/10/2022 03:19

Luckily my babies rarely woke up other than to feed and went back down fairly easily.
But I'm up now as I'm type 1 diabetic and just had a hypo (very low blood sugars). Had to get up to eat something and now waiting for my levels to get to normal. Calories I did not need!
I'd usually read a bit then fall back asleep - silly going on MN!

Bbomb · 29/10/2022 03:35

Congratulations! The early baby days are crazy and lovely.

Just stumbled on this whilst up with my poorly 8 month old DD.

Anyone good any Halloween plans/plans this weekend?

MandaLynn · 29/10/2022 03:37

Hi!
Currently up with my 4 week old. Normally she settles in the night okay after a feed, but been up 2hrs with her now 😫

Finally just got her asleep, but now afraid she'll pop back awake when I put her back down!
