Just wondered your thoughts if you had

I have done it quite a few times.

I don't believe in channelling energy and unblocking chakras etc - but I have chronic pain and I find it deeply relaxing, enough to calm my nervous system and turn my pain off temporarily. So it's nice for that.

Relaxation rather than woo for me.

RMNandthensome · 20/10/2022 18:35

Yes i have a few times, also know a few people personally that do it and i have def felt a release in heavy energy, emotions, and calm after. You normally talk through why you are there first of all and what you would like to work on. Nothing wrong with giving it a try and it is very relaxing during the process after you have discussed initially why you are there. I know a few people that also get reiki and also only have good experiences..

ChunkyMonkeyIsBack · 20/10/2022 18:50

I tried it once. Every few minutes I would laugh uncontrollably, I couldn’t stop it even though I wasn’t thinking of anything. That was strange. The lady told me it was fine and she’s had people sobbing before. About an hour after the session I had a weird headache that tablets wouldn’t touch.

User19876 · 20/10/2022 18:53

It is complete and utter bollocks. How is having someone’s hands hovering over you going to do anything? Absolute nonsense.

Milknosugarta · 20/10/2022 18:54

It's a little bit woo.

Purplecatshopaholic · 20/10/2022 18:55

I have, as a friend is a therapist. It did nothing for me, although I didn’t want to offend her by saying so, lol. I wouldn’t rush to have it again.

Me. It was bollocks. See also Hopi candles

^ this was my experience too. I had a few sessions while deeply stressed and anxious.
I was spoken to gently and kindly, wrapped up in a nice warm blanket & had permission to lay down & do nothing for 30 minutes in a calm room with relaxing music & incense burning.
I left feeling a whole lot better but I'm sure it was the environment & practitioner, rather than the actual reiki Wink

Wibbly1008 · 20/10/2022 18:58

I liked the calm and relaxation of it, but it didn’t cure/heal or do anything I noticed. Nothing a massage wouldn’t have done better really .

Ooh what’s Hopi candles ? Any good ?

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 20/10/2022 19:35

Depends what your expectation is🤷‍♀️

I use a pain management programme that promotes deep relaxation and sending safe signals to my brain. Reiki is one way that helps me with this. So it's "healing" in a way but only because it helps me retrain my brain. Being cosy under blankets and having someone hold you is nice. It's comforting. I can't have massages as it's too painful.

Pumperthepumper · 20/10/2022 19:38

It’s bollocks. It’s fraud, it’s praying on the desperate to sell them something.

wetpebbles · 20/10/2022 19:39

Had it a few years ago and felt very grounded and calm afterwards

wheresmymojo · 20/10/2022 20:03

I am very anti-woo but had reiki from a friend of a friend who needed to practise on people.

I figured having a nap for a while was an easy favour.

I was quite surprised that I started to feel heat and pins and needle type tingles (not painful at all just an odd sensation). Parts of my body felt heat from her hands well beyond anything that could be explained by body heat from them...it was very weird!

WorkerBeeeee · 20/10/2022 20:18

Useless at best.
Occultist at worst (see also: ouji boards)

gluenotsoup · 20/10/2022 20:45

Fabulous. I went in with no expectation, deep scepticism and came out converted. It was relaxing, but something more than that, it was like pressing an emotional and physical reset button. At times I felt intense heat, and both laughed and sobbed. So odd but so good.

Moisetting · 21/10/2022 09:50

Interesting. I'm going to give it a go

Definitely try it! There's no belief system, just go with an open heart, relax and enjoy.

I studied Reiki a few years ago and every person I had as a case study had a positive response. Some profound, some subtle but all benefitted from it in some way. Some amazing physical reactions too.

No charge while studying so not ripping people off.

Perhaps we are so sophisticated as humans we have forgotten how to tap into our own energy?

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 21/10/2022 11:21

I know a good number of people who sing the praises of reiki.
IMVHO the chakra stuff is bolleaux, but they're benefiting from having a caring interaction with protected 1:1 time devoted to them, being listened to and sympathised with, in gentle, relaxing surroundings. I think if you've paid no more than for a pseudo scientific spa treatment then you've not been ripped off.

I’m not a woo person in any way. But…. A friend’s wife had just qualified in Reiki and offered me a session. At that point I had had four failed rounds of IVF/ICSI and had just turned 39.

I felt a warmth at the time and a lightness afterwards and our next IVF cycle worked.

Probably no connection, but it has left me slightly more open minded.

I've been laughed at for mentioning this before, but one of my rabbits had reiki many years ago. She, along with 2 others, had caught a virus which, in her case, left her paralysed in the back legs.

This semi-feral rabbit who would never relax in human company positively melted onto the table whilst my friend did his stuff. She'd have sat on his lap all afternoon, I'm sure. She even let me repeat the movements later.

She recovered to the extent you'd never have guessed she'd been so poorly. I'm not saying her recovery is due to the reiki but it definitely had a positive affect on her.

theshadeofgreen · 21/10/2022 12:22

I fully believe it is fraud.

I had it done, believing it was fraud.

Then I vomited and had a headache so bad I couldn't move for hours.

Bizarre.

I sit firmly on the fence - many years ago my dm bought us both a training experience where I ‘graduated’ and can give Reiki to myself and others - I was happy to do a thing with dm and it was an interesting experience but they were clear that there was no need for me to subscribe to any belief system - and it would still ‘work’. Over the years, I’ve been in situations where hope has completely gone and in those moments it has been a privilege to offer the simple act of laying on (or near) hands. I’ve ‘given’ it to dying relatives, mothers in labour, people suffering acute or chronic pain who are in extreme crisis, following giving first aid while waiting for ambulance, following bereavement. I’ve also given it to pets who are dying or unwell. Not as a cure but to offer a physical act of compassion during the situation. It also helps me. Without wanting to delve into the woo - I also have a side interest in particle physics and theoretical physics - and I’m learning that the tiniest stuff in our universe isn’t really made of anything - just folds in space time making matter - obviously that’s my very basic understanding but my point is - it’s not magical or supernatural - the universe is and we know that we don’t know what’s going on at the sub-atomic levels so who’s to say what’s happening!
