I've always thought it must be a nice job, no idea if the reality matches my little daydream though!
Anyone work there who can enlighten me? Thanks in advance

My friend did! He said it was fun, and he got a lot of sell bye to take home (his mum got mad when he brought home 10 pots of double cream - what the heck are we going to do with all this? But he said it was freezing cold down there!

My friends Mum took a part-time job there because she thought it would be a good way to get a bit of pin money and a decent discount too. It was busier and more stressful than she anticipated but she eventually quit because they kept turning down her annual leave requests so she could never book a holiday.

Are you good with food pairings?

😆

BalmyBalmes · 14/10/2022 22:22

Is that you Adrian?

BalmyBalmes · 14/10/2022 22:23

Sorry Aidan not Adrian!

Backbreaking if they put you on the milk.

A life dream to work in Marks & Spencers? Aim higher @ooohlittlesebastian Aim higher!

Also, M & S are planning to shut down a lot of stores. So the job wouldn't last very long anyway.

They're replacing stores with M&S food stores, so you're pretty damn wrong there @WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps as usual.

@RomilyH

Wow that sounds like they squeeze every penny out of you.
I didn't understand the targets part.

Management sound crazy to be asking all this really.

I’m lucky enough to
not need to work anymore but I often think about working in Simply Foods. Seeing all that lovely food, getting first pick of the yellow stickers and meeting new people every day. I’m sure the reality is different, one of my former senior managers retired and went to work there as a Christmas temp on a really early shift and she absolutely loved it. She did a stint at Morrisons before and hated that.

I don’t think it’s necessarily about aiming higher, after 35 years in an often stressful career many of us are happy not to aim anywhere anymore. Work is more about the social than the money.

MrsArrDee · 15/10/2022 15:27

I worked at M&S in the food hall while I was at Uni. Loved it.

It was very busy especially in the run up to Christmas, but good fun.

The food reductions were phenomenal - I used to pay 1p for a loaf and milk, 75% off perishable food in the waste shop at the end of the day.

20% staff discount on everything else.

Like any job there's good and bad, great colleagues and lazy colleagues.

But the interview was absolute bonkers - I had to advise a "customer" on what to serve at a buffet lunch when there were no cooking facilities and convince them that an uncooked chicken wasn't the best idea.

I also had to deal with a customer who wanted to return a Christmas Gift - a selection of mini port bottles. They were at least 15 years old, and given to them from their Gran who was known for regifting 😊

@TheHouseonHauntedHill

Yes every last penny. Most things have a target….stock counts, speed on till etc. They removed all chairs from the tills as they felt we didn’t need them and we’d work quicker standing? That didn’t last long as most of us are 40/50/60s some with various ailments and you can’t stand for 3 or 4 hours in that small area without discomfort.

We know the company has to move with the present climate and we have to change processes/procedures constantly with not much training time and it can be back breaking some days.

Someone mentioned first dibs on yellow stickers items…NOPE. Reductions are now done in the evening ready for morning trade….no staff shop anymore.

The discount of 20% helps a lot and I appreciate it.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 15/10/2022 18:33

@RomilyH

That's absolutely abhorrent to remove chairs!

Disgusting and I'm not sure that's legal?
