Does anyone work in M&S food? What's it like?

I've always thought it must be a nice job, no idea if the reality matches my little daydream though!
Anyone work there who can enlighten me? Thanks in advance

10 years ago it was fairly horrible with productivity targets and I'd imagine it's worse now. Clothing/home and store ops were definitely easier positions.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/10/2022 13:30

Are you good with food pairings?

MrsMoastyToasty · 14/10/2022 13:32

Warehouse or shops?

ooohlittlesebastian · 14/10/2022 13:33

OK there's obviously a previous thread I'm not aware of. Forget I asked😬

What sort of chips would you suggest go well with steak?

Hiphopopotamus · 14/10/2022 13:59

What a weird dream to have. Surely it’s just like working any other retail job?

JamMakingWannaBe · 14/10/2022 14:10

I understand from the other thread they are recruiting Xmas staff at the moment so now would be a good time to apply.

It was pointed out on the other thread that Lidl and Aldi pay more, and have better staff conditions.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 14/10/2022 14:12

Avoid if the manager is called Aiden

Alarae · 14/10/2022 14:13

Admittedly this was about ten years ago, but I worked there while at university for about 3 months. As far as retail jobs go, I quite enjoyed it. Kept busy but not ridiculous.

Best job I had was as box office staff in a cinema. Couple of rushes then quiet throughout the rest of the shift so could have a chat. I often watched films behind the counter if I was doing the close on Saturday nights.

RomilyH · 14/10/2022 14:43

@ooohlittlesebastian

I do.

THE TRUTH

The pay could be better but it’s not the worst in retail by far.

It’s non-stop from when you hit the floor. I do 04:30 - 12:30. My daily shift involves cleaning milk and juice and dairy shelves, filling all dairy, juices, desserts and FOTM (Food on the Move) put out any new tickets, then go to help colleague’s who haven’t finished their ‘fill’.

Then we scan all the gaps in our departments whilst running to either go on a till or help a colleague already on one; help customers with any queries, refunds, food orders, complaints….whilst keeping an eye out for our regular ‘people who take without paying’…there’s only 1 security guard at 8am for the entire 3 storey shop.

Go to break. Go to our warehouse/bay to see if we can find any stock for our ‘gaps’…straight to counts (required by HO…or ‘The Office’ as they’re known) which could be anything between 20 and 150 items per shift. The Office also requires TARGETTED counts so we scour the bay again and shop floor with constant interruptions from colleagues and customers alike so this can take a while. Then HOME TIME

We are horribly short staffed sometimes 4 people for the first 3hrs of opening…run from pillar to post. We’re dealing with more and more complaints as the company appears to want everyone pushed towards self service….I can’t and won’t turn down anyone who has a trolley, is elderly or just doesn’t want to use them and will always open a belted till.

Most customers are lovely…some are truly vile. My colleagues are a mixed bunch

The expectations from management are high and there’s never enough time in the day. WE are knackered BUT most days are good.

It depends how good your knowledge of the product is. And if you're a teenage boy.

ooohlittlesebastian · 14/10/2022 15:01

@RomilyH thank you so much for that insight, very helpful and informative

I don't know but I can't remember what is was called now

StupidSmallFruit · 14/10/2022 19:12

You’ll need to interview well, OP.

DodgyLeftLeg · 14/10/2022 19:21

OP you’re either unaware there is an M&S troll or you are it. I suspect the former but just be aware there is an ‘interesting’ poster who repeatedly asks about M&S having been declined a role there.

This may not be the place for you to ask.
