Thanks 😊

Just watched PMQs on catch up. She's insane. Absolutely totally out of her fecking tree. And since when has it been ok to jab your finger at the person you're speaking to, pretty much the whole time she's talking.

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2022 18:23

Johnson did the finger jabbing as well.

Roussette · 13/10/2022 18:31

I've watched clips of PMQs.

Oh my golly good god. When will she realise she is the PM of the party in power and is supposed to answer questions as opposed to ask the actual opposition questions?
It was absolutely frightful. Her Ministers looked embarrassed, Starmer was bemused and this tweet sums it up...

'I don't think Starmer quite knows what to with Truss at #PMQs.
It's like trying to explain trigonometry to a labrador. She just stands there, gazing uncomprehendingly at him.'

Blossomtoes · 13/10/2022 18:34

I saw that tweet @Roussette. It made me laugh.

Long ago on the Westminstenders threads there was talk of how we might be heading for an Argentina or god forbid a Venezuela situation.
I don’t think we actually are, but heaven knows the situation is out of control.

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2022 19:18

I was mostly a lurker on those threads but I learnt lots and found many resourses through them. So many times they have proven to be spot on.

Same here, also lurk on this thread very informative & helps in keeping me from going totally bonkers.

Thread from Robert Peston -

"A couple of important things. First I am as confident as I can be that early next week Truss and Kwarteng will cancel their promise NOT to increase corporation tax by 6 percentage points to raise £18bn, in one of the most humiliating ever tax u-turns 1/10"

twitter.com/peston/status/1580620931487387651?s=46&t=IWgjPiwQPYyUwNhv7Eg4pw

I think if I've interpreted this thread correctly T&K will U-turn because the markets have acted on the basis they will. So if they don't U turn the financial implications are such that they would be finished (and we will be in an even bigger mess).

But they are probably finished anyway because of the U turn.

I remember reading similar comments. If I'm honest I didn't really fully appreciate the references or how quickly our political system would be overrun post Brexit.

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2022 20:01

"or how quickly our political system would be overrun post Brexit"

Scrap that.
I didn't realise that the Conservatives were no longer recognisable (to me) Conservatives.

DuncinToffee · 13/10/2022 20:01

I agree with your interpretation of the Peston thread, that's how I read it too.

If you know which way the market will go, and when, you can make an awful lot of money........

TokyoSushi · 13/10/2022 21:26

I had a Labour canvasser at the door earlier (quite unusual) asking what I thought of the current political situation? I gave her about 20 minutes of 'views' back. She said that I was very well informed! Grin

They definitely seemed to be on an election footing!

Tory MPs on manoeuvres (again)

They predicted a pact between Sunakk, who lost to Truss in the members’ ballot, and Mordauntt, who finished third in the leadership contest, would have the support of an overwhelming majority of Conservative MPs.
Around “20 to 30” former ministers and senior backbenchers are attempting to find a way for a “council of elders” to tell Truss to quit. “Conversations are stepping up,” said one former minister.

So Sunak or Mordaunt as a "unity candidate." Can't quite see how this would pan out - which would settle to be No 2?

I really think it ought to be Gove.

Notonthestairs · 13/10/2022 21:58

"I really think it ought to be Gove."
Maybe they should all get a turn?

TokyoSushi · 13/10/2022 22:07

I'd be astonished if Gove didn't have a big part in the overthrowing!

the80sweregreat · 13/10/2022 22:07

I wished I understood markets and all that
Maths is a subject I'll never get ;(
I've tried!

the80sweregreat · 13/10/2022 22:08

Gove likes doing people over
He'll be involved somewhere no doubt!

Kwarteng flying home early from US for crunch talks with PM. 😬

jgw1 · 14/10/2022 05:54

Govey, Govey, Govey.

TokyoSushi · 14/10/2022 06:29

Morning! Grin

I think it's going to be a fun day, if you like that sort of thing! I reckon the whole mini budget will be scrapped, I wonder if KK might be sacked too for good measure?

It's not going to save them though, it's way too far gone. The notion of some sort of Sunak/Mordaunt combo seems to be gathering pace. I know it has absolutely nothing to do with how she'd perform as PM or similar, but Mordaunt was very impressive at King Charles proclaimation a few weeks ago. They'd do for now so to speak as they'd likely steady the ship a bit until we get a GE.

"I'm not going anywhere" wasn't quite correct then!
