How often do you check your bank account?

I used to be terrible about checking my bank balance, mainly because I was in denial about it!

I've since cleaned my act up. While I'm not rich, I'm no longer overdrawn at all let alone soon after payday, and part of this is by regularly checking my account so I know if I can actually afford something. I check it about 5-7 times a week and it helps me stay on track financially without a doubt.

I see my balance multiple times a day as I have a widget on my phone that shows my balance without even needing to log into my banking app.

Hi Notjusta,

What widget is that? It sounds really handy?

Thinkbiglittleone · 04/10/2022 14:38

I last checked mine maybe 2 weeks or so ago.

I usually check it if I have made a few large purchases close together.

I should check it more often really for fraud protection, I don't have it on my phone or on an App, I need to log in online.

Not notjusta but if you have android, depending on if your bank does it they will have a widget option, I have one on my home screen for my tesco credit card.

reigatecastle · 04/10/2022 16:06

Every day, I either check online or on the app.

Zippedydoo123 · 04/10/2022 16:29

I check online every morning. I thought most people did this. To check no fraud.

LadyWithLapdog · 04/10/2022 16:35

I have a joint account which I haven’t checked in a few years. I trust DH and he checks it at least weekly. I keep on top of my own credit card.

Titsflyingsouth · 04/10/2022 16:40

About twice a week. I'm on a mission to be on top of my finances...

TeenDivided · 04/10/2022 16:42

Monthly when the paper based statement arrives.
With bank statements & credit card statements I always check through, annotate anything unusual and make sure I know what all the spending was.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 04/10/2022 18:58

Minimum once a day

Years ago in days of paper statements I used to keep a written daily tally then do a bank rec once the statement arrived

Yes I'm an accountant 😄

Smellywellyhoo · 04/10/2022 19:12

At least once a day.

Sparkle900429 · 04/10/2022 19:14

Everyday.

Badbadbunny · 04/10/2022 19:15

At least weekly. I keep some book-keeping software and enter all transactions from all bank and credit card accounts onto it, and reconcile the bank balances per the online systems against the book-keeping software at least weekly, often 2 or 3 times per week. I'm VERY on top of our finances and pick up on anything unusual or unexpected almost immediately.

Gingersay · 04/10/2022 19:15

Multiple times a day on my phone, I much preferred it when you had to wait on the statement.

StupidSmallFruit · 04/10/2022 19:21

Several times a day.

I have a budget spreadsheet and know how much we have to the penny in all bank accounts, savings accounts, mortgage and pension.

I budget like a ninja because we have several large outgoings a month and I like to keep on top of it.

CandyCaneLane0 · 04/10/2022 19:23

Every morning

declutteringmymind · 04/10/2022 19:25

Almost every day. I've really got my act together and have actually started to save these past few months without feeling at all hard done by. In fact I treat myself just as much, and when I do it feels much more satisfying when I do.

rhowton · 04/10/2022 21:41

Twice a day, sometimes more, it's linked to my business account too.

CaronPoivre · 04/10/2022 21:46

You’re meant to check your accounts? I’m not sure I ever have.

TheChosenTwo · 04/10/2022 22:54

I look at mine monthly, just the app on my phone. Transfer whatever’s left just before payday to savings.
My sister in law once told me she checked hers every day and I privately thought she was very strange and obsessive. I now see that it’s really common!

PuckleP · 06/10/2022 13:43

I was the same, totally in denial but now check the balance on my accounts on an almost daily basis. I've also set a calendar reminder for the day before payday to move anything over x amount into my savings.

Lovemusic33 · 06/10/2022 13:49

Every day, sometimes twice a day. Usually before buying something big (to check if I can afford it), before doing a food shop, to check if things have gone in or out and to see if anyone has magically paid a small fortune into it 🤣

Quveas · 06/10/2022 13:51

Weekly. But I check alerts on the phone app as they come in to ensure I recognise them.

Doggiedoodoos · 06/10/2022 14:22

Every morning when I wake up and I have no idea why as I know exactly what goes in and out every day. Perhaps I think someone will find my account details, feel sorry for me and make a lodgement to it!

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 06/10/2022 15:41

Multiple times a day. It’s easy as I have the Monzo app. I’m probably hoping the balance will magically go up 🙈.

Mischance · 06/10/2022 15:45

Every day - online.

I started this after there was fraudulent activity on my account, which was discovered by amazon, who emailed me to check - I will always be grateful to them for being alert. I realised that I was not checking my account frequently enough or I would have picked it up myself.

I still have no idea how the fraud came about; and was very disappointed that the police did not show any interest in following up, even though it would have been easy to trace the perpetrators - they used my account to pay their council tax!
