How often do you check your bank account?

I used to be terrible about checking my bank balance, mainly because I was in denial about it!

I've since cleaned my act up. While I'm not rich, I'm no longer overdrawn at all let alone soon after payday, and part of this is by regularly checking my account so I know if I can actually afford something. I check it about 5-7 times a week and it helps me stay on track financially without a doubt.

Every day. I have an allocated amount to spend daily and I like to make sure I'm keeping to it. Plus I make sure direct debits are correct etc.

RosieRainbow1986 · 04/10/2022 11:36

Every day or maybe every other day...I like to know my direcr debits have gone out and then how much spending money I have. Trying really hard to cut back so checking more often than normal!

Zingy123 · 04/10/2022 08:49

Every morning.

This..on the App. Let's me see what payments have gone out and where l stand. Takes a second.

MissingNashville · 04/10/2022 12:00

Once a month to move wages to a bills/savings account, make any other payments and send the kids their allowance. If I’m expecting a refund, I will sometimes check again to see if it’s gone in.

megletthesecond · 04/10/2022 12:02

Daily.
I stopped a fraudulent spend that way.

AuntieMarys · 04/10/2022 12:09

At least 3 times a week...ditto credit card transactions.

WaddleAway · 04/10/2022 12:11

Every day. I like to see what’s going in and out, and we operate to a tight budget so have to look for anything unexpected coming out that might make us go overdrawn.

Floydthebarber · 04/10/2022 12:16

I used to be the same, checked a couple of days after payday, panicked and didn't check it again until I had the text telling me I was nearly at my overdraft limit. Not from frivolous buying, just a difficult time financially.

Now I check several times a week. I have the texts about my overdraft and set up the messages from Halifax that tells me whenever I spend. I still don't buy excessively, just essential things and a small treat (face wash, moisturiser and eyebrow gel this month!) but I like feeling more in control.

Beachbabe1 · 04/10/2022 12:17

Everyday on the app! It's good to know what's going on with your finances.

Floydthebarber · 04/10/2022 12:20

I also switched to using the app (this was a few years ago, I know loads of people do now) but as it was so quick to log in it took away some of the sick dread feeling that I had when I typed in the website, entered my log ins, waited for it to load. Now a couple of clicks and I get a nice clear picture.

TheFlis12345 · 04/10/2022 12:28

Most days on the app. I have a spreadsheet of all outgoings that I keep updated regularly so I always know how I am tracking and how much I have left to go into savings or use as fun money.

Scottishwidow193 · 04/10/2022 12:31

Every day here too. AM and PM. I often transfer small additional amounts into the savings accounts and I like to check the direct debits and what we've spent. Keeps us on track.

TeaCosyApplePie · 04/10/2022 12:57

Twice a day, morning and evening. I'm a bit paranoid but it puts my mind at ease to see all is in order.

WestCovinaCalifornia · 04/10/2022 13:04

Actually logging in not very often, once every 2 weeks maybe. I get app notifications whenever money moves or when it gets below a certain amount so don't feel the need to actually login as get all the info I need.

TooHotToTangoToo · 04/10/2022 13:07

Daily

moosel · 04/10/2022 13:13

At least twice a day and update my spreadsheet accordingly. On a very tight budget and like to plan ahead 2/3 months.

Soproudoflionesses · 04/10/2022 13:18

I check it every single day without fail and it keeps me on the straight and narrow.
Used to be permanently overdrawn before online banking.

Rover83 · 04/10/2022 13:26

My H has a massive issue with over spending, he's like a small kid with money and seems to view it as a challenge to spend every penny as fast as possible. We are constantly broke and overdrawn, honestly I think if I won thousands of pounds tomorrow he'd find a way to waste it all. I'm obsessed with checking our account then I panic as we don't have enough to cover bills and food and then I check it constantly and panic more and more, its the worst thing in the world. I try to move money around so I can hide it from him but it never works. Obviously I'm too broke to divorce him or force him to move out so I'm stuck in this awful situation where we spiral more and more into debt

edwinbear · 04/10/2022 13:37

Every day. I also have a spreadsheet with all my savings and investments which gets updated daily too, particularly at the moment when the shares I own are so volatile. I work in finance though so a bit 'spreadsheet happy'! I've got one with my pension forecasts on it, one for projected school fees at various rates of fee inflation, and another two with how I'll spend my fantasy lottery and premium bond wins.....it's a bit OTT really, but at least I am fully on top of our household finances.

Always4Brenner · 04/10/2022 13:39

Obsessed with it check all the time.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 04/10/2022 13:44

I have online banking and I check daily I'm on benefits due to disability so I account for every £1

DillDanding · 04/10/2022 13:46

Every day. Mostly because I am constantly transferring money to son at uni (or it just feels that way as it’s the beginning of term).

ColonelCarter · 04/10/2022 14:23

At least every day. Usually several times a day as I'm frequently moving money around at the start of the month.

torthecatlady · 04/10/2022 14:27

Daily, multiple times on the app. Probably more cautious due to previous fraudulent activity.

BarrelOfOtters · 04/10/2022 14:30

I've set it up to send me a summary by text every MOnday morning and if there are any transactions over a certain amount. I get notifications of spends on my credit card too. Mostly for fraud prevention but also just to keep me on track.
