How often do you check your bank account?

I used to be terrible about checking my bank balance, mainly because I was in denial about it!

I've since cleaned my act up. While I'm not rich, I'm no longer overdrawn at all let alone soon after payday, and part of this is by regularly checking my account so I know if I can actually afford something. I check it about 5-7 times a week and it helps me stay on track financially without a doubt.

Twice a month, on payday and about halfway through or near the end of the month. I always get an alert anytime a payment is made so I have a kind of idea what's going on on a daily basis anyway.

Marmite27 · 04/10/2022 09:53

Every working day, unless I’m on annual leave.

I know roughly what’s what when I’m on leave though.

OnTheBrinkOfChange · 04/10/2022 09:56

Every night before I go to sleep. I also round down to the nearest £5 or £10 and pay that into my credit card account. I don't miss it from my current account but it is all adds up in the credit card account.

FruitPastilleNut · 04/10/2022 10:00

Every day, sometimes more than once.

I'm often on my Monzo app anyway though for random things - to move money about, pay £3 for someone's birthday in work, transfer £20 to my sister for a joint gift we're buying for mum etc.

The only time I didn't check regularly was years ago when we were in absolute financial shit because I just couldn't bear to see it.

OrangePumpkinLobelia · 04/10/2022 10:02

I check our joint account most days. Mainly because I am trying to really rein in our spending and want to be really aware of it.

35965a · 04/10/2022 10:04

Daily since my friend didn’t notice her account drained by some kind of card fraud. Put the fear in me!

SatinHeart · 04/10/2022 10:05

A couple of times a week probably. Definitely the day before I know any bills are going out.

Rutland2022 · 04/10/2022 10:05

Daily-via app

BMW6 · 04/10/2022 10:07

At least once a week to update my spreadsheet detailing all income and expenditures. My budget forecasts every month for the whole year ahead so I can plan for all eventualitys.

Glittertwins · 04/10/2022 10:09

Pretty much daily. I like to know what's there and what I can move out to savings etc

Notjusta · 04/10/2022 10:10

I see my balance multiple times a day as I have a widget on my phone that shows my balance without even needing to log into my banking app.

Electricalstress · 04/10/2022 10:12

Prob a few times a day and I wait till 12-1am on days moneys going in (x3 a week) so I can transfer it to savings pot so that bills don’t go out before I can get food or pay rent

YumYummy · 04/10/2022 10:12

Two or three times a day on the app.

SarahShorty · 04/10/2022 10:14

Every day. I check and adjust balances as we have multiple accounts.

Quizzed · 04/10/2022 10:15

3/4 times a week. I used to hardly ever check my bank account but since getting the app I do check it more. Its helped me to understand where I spend money and to save better.

middleofthelittle · 04/10/2022 10:17

Once a week or so, but always on payday to ensure we've been paid correctly

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/10/2022 10:18

Daily and every time I get a"ping" on my mobile banking app. I worked for a high street bank in the 80s and even then I checked daily.

Refrosty · 04/10/2022 10:24

Daily. After pay day, I send money to savings accounts and CC. Then the rest of the month, I do a lot of juggling to ensure it lasts... It gets mighty tight that week before payday lol.

nipersvest · 04/10/2022 10:29

Daily, and I have alerts set up for all transactions. To be fair though, we have our own business and I do the bookkeeping, prior to that I was a bit more bury head in sand. I have no choice now but to be all over it but it's a good habit to get the kids into. As with many businesses, it's a case of feast and famine which needs managing constantly.

WeeblesWibbleWobble · 04/10/2022 10:33

daily to 2 days for mine and joint account.
Daily on dh business account to ensure money is being paid by customers etc. And to pay any bills and pay invoices for work hes outsourced

cookiecreammmpie · 04/10/2022 10:36

About every 2 days

GnomeDePlume · 04/10/2022 10:37

Every few days. I put all our transactions into a spreadsheet to categorise them. Started this a few years ago. It doesn't take long and has helped me to keep a good eye on our spending.

LucyLoopyLu · 04/10/2022 10:43

Personal account - a few times a week, less often if I'm not doing / spending much

Joint account - once a week

However these are with Monzo and Starling respectively, and the app notifications / predictions of your regular outgoings make it easy to keep on top of your money, so I feel pretty clued up all the time!

I love monzo more than starling though; find the app more user friendly and the colours work for me. Starling looks very pretty and sleek but I find it harder to use

Dougieowner · 04/10/2022 10:46

Once or twice a month, just to see that bills etc have gone out ok or if I am making a transfer.
We are always in credit (and have a float) so am not concerned about going overdrawn.

Shinyhappyperson22 · 04/10/2022 11:04

15 years ago I was crap and on low wages maxed my overdraft. I hated knowing how crap my bank account and finances were so only looked if it had
I sorted myself out and became debt free of it all and now thanks to banking apps I check daily and no longer scared of my balance and I’m on top of my finances.
