I made cheese on toast today and it was a let down.
Anybody any hints to make it tastier.

Since the end of eye level grills, anything grilled or toasted is always a let down

I find

Really good strong cheese
And marmite underneath it. Though some heathens (nearly everyone I know) think this is a terrible idea.

JohnsShirt · 28/09/2022 10:06

What was a let down about it?

GetOffTheRoof · 28/09/2022 10:07

Toast one side of the bread. Grate enough of the strongest cheese you can buy. Then grate a bit more. Place cheese on untoasted side of bread. Shake on a few drops of Lea and Perrins. Add a bit more a few times during grilling. Serve when cheese is properly bubbled and the sauce looks very black.

Don't use mild cheese, it's like rubber and tasteless.

Good cheese is required. Onion, pesto, tomato, pickle, marmite...all things you could add to make it tastier

Margo34 · 28/09/2022 10:07

How did you so it? What was it that let you down about it?

Margo34 · 28/09/2022 10:07

*do

AdaColeman · 28/09/2022 10:09

Plenty of mustard!

Cheesybread222 · 28/09/2022 10:09

I think it was the cheese it wasn't strong enough.
And I used Lea and Perrin's but obviously not enough.

I did lightly toast the bread and I've never tried marmite, might give that a go.

Toast the bread thoroughly on one side under the grill, put cheese on un-toasted side, then grill. And add Worcestershire sauce at the end.

toastofthetown · 28/09/2022 10:14

Adding Henderson’s relish makes a big difference.

Also if you are willing to make a little more effort eggs kejriwal is delicious. Add a thin layer of mustard to your toasted bread, add mixed grated cheese and chopped chillis, toast under the grill to melt the cheese and top with a fried egg. It’s also delicious without the egg as just chilli cheese on toast.

Extra mature cheddar sprinkled with lee and perrins sauce. White bread

I long for an eye level grill...or at the very least a separate grill. The grill is inside the oven, what's that all about.

bellac11 · 28/09/2022 10:18

And the grills inside ovens are never even, half the bread not touched, the other end burnt to a crisp

MrsSwnllyd · 28/09/2022 10:21

Toast both sides but not too much, add loads of strong cheddar when it's melted enough spread a good blob of Dijon mustard on it and grill some more.

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 28/09/2022 10:22

Layer of English mustard under the mature cheddar for a poor man’s Welsh Rarebit. Absolutely delicious

Sprig1 · 28/09/2022 10:22

Chutney under the cheese and make sure you cook it for long enough.

Cheesybread222 · 28/09/2022 10:24

Some great ideas I'll be trying

WaltzingWaters · 28/09/2022 10:25

Dijon mustard. Red onion. Tomato. Chutney. And yep, extra mature cheddar (or strong version of whatever cheese you’re using.

MessingWithTheBlessing · 28/09/2022 10:25

I could eat (microwaved) cheese on toast every day three times a day. Any cheese.
Especially with lots of Tabasco. You could also put some tomato Slices under the cheese before you melt it. I once tried peanut butter under the cheese which was utterly butterly heavenly.
