I made cheese on toast today and it was a let down.
Anybody any hints to make it tastier.

Maybe one for kids rather than adults, but during the first lockdown my 6 year old wanted pizza for lunch which I didn't have so we invented Mummy's pizza.

Toast one side of the bread then turn over spread with red sauce, ham and cheese and put back under the grill. He absolutely loved it and over 2 years later he will still ask for Mummy's pizza Smile

Had this yesterday made with Red Fox Red Leicester. Lightly spread with chilli jam (think it came from Lidl?). Absolutely lovely.

That's the bread first, needs to be proper white bread, butter, always grate the cheese and make sure it goes to the edges so the already toasted bread doesn't burn. Grill it till it's properly melted, nothing more disappointing than not properly melted cheese.

I like a bit of onion on mine or Lea and perrins.

Alternatively make it into a sandwich, butter the outside and fry it in extra butter until both sides are crispy and cheese is melted.

Toast the bread!

Brieeeeeeeee · 28/09/2022 10:41

Try Wensleydale cheese

BettySweaty · 28/09/2022 10:43

Sourdough toast. Then cheese. Then salad cream 😋

bellac11 · 28/09/2022 10:44

Wensleydale doesnt melt right

Also agreeing with another poster about peanut butter, peanut butter, then cheese, then chilli flakes. And just like others are saying the cheese must be grated and all the way to the edge and very hot, dont leave any unmelted

AlternativelyWired · 28/09/2022 10:47

HP sauce.

Following. Love cheese on toast and some of these sound great. I have some sauces from Cottage Delight that i add, very nice!

Sometimes I spread the melting cheese with a knife mid-way through grilling to make sure it goes to the edges

RaRaRaspoutine · 28/09/2022 10:52

Salted butter, strong cheddar, worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper, a little bit of paprika... yummy.

Vastlyunderrated · 28/09/2022 10:53

Toast bread
Chuck in air fryer
Add grated cheese
Cook for a couple of minutes
Best cheese on toast I've had since I was a kid and my mum had an eye level grill

This is absolutely key.

allflownthenest · 28/09/2022 10:53

grate your cheese and add fresh chopped chili and coriander

And the grills inside ovens are never even, half the bread not touched, the other end burnt to a crisp

Rotating your bread half way through solves that issue.

I don't like the cheese too strong. We buy mature and extra mature cheddar and all the other cheeses and I find them too cheesy for cheese on toast.

But I do like Wensleydale on toast, or a smoked or flavoured cheese like double gloucester with onion in.

maddy68 · 28/09/2022 10:56

String cheese. Grated for full coverage. With Worcester sauce yum. Youve made me want it for lunch

ChangedNameAgain99 · 28/09/2022 10:57

Eye level gas grills absolutely the best.

TheScorpionandtheFrog · 28/09/2022 10:58

French's or English mustard on the bread.

blockpavingismynightmare · 28/09/2022 11:01

The best cheese toastie you will ever eat is a cheese sarny toasted in butter on both sides in a frying pan. Add a tiny bit of oil to stop the butter burning. I use mature cheddar but honestly I do not think it matters about the cheese. It is fab and my mouth is watering now at the very thought of it

Rosehugger · 28/09/2022 11:02

Need thick cut wholemeal or granary bread. Some really nice mature Cheddar which melts well, perhaps a bit of Gruyere. Toast one side of the bread under the grill, flip over, turn the grill down a bit, apply cheese right to the edges and cook until it bubbles and browns in places. Bit of black pepper on top. Picked beetroot is amazing with it.

Next level. Put ham in the sandwich as well as cheese (or substitute with onion, pickle or tomato), cut into quarters and dip into beaten egg, then fry in butter.

Eggy bread sandwich. Yum.

Em308 · 28/09/2022 11:06

How has no one mentioned tomatoes yet? Pre toast the bread, butter, mustard, sliced tomatoes, strong cheddar, grill, eat. Lush.

Rosehugger · 28/09/2022 11:07

Ooh yes, grilled tomatoes.

Moonatics · 28/09/2022 11:08

Add any from
Mustard
Shallots chopped small
Spring onions chopped small
Ham under the cheese
Marmite
Worcestershire sauce
Olives
Sliced tomato
Chilli flakes
Chutney of choice
Crisps of choice
Pesto
Use a different cheese like goats cheese or gruyere and add honey or brie and grapes?
My all time favourite is strong blue cheese like stilton on fruit bread. Just bloody lovely.
Oddly I had cheese on toast this morning, but just plain old cheese and lea and perrins cos theres not much left in my fridge.

That sounds good, do you need much butter in your pan or is it just enough to stop the bread sticking?
