how gorgeous is Greece?
Half a century old, travelled all
over the world and never been before.
I can't imagine going anywhere else
now. Cant believe I left it so long.
Crete: so beautiful!

Kefalonia is even nicer.

PollyCreo · 25/09/2022 17:46

I've just got back from Crete today, beautiful island!

love4189 · 25/09/2022 18:16

glad you loved Crete too!
I think we're going to have to visit all the islands now. Kefalonia and Zakynthos are next on my list!

We're going to Santorini early in the season next year, really looking forward to it.

love4189 · 25/09/2022 18:18

oh yes, I must go to Santorini too, just a gorgeous. And the fantastic Greek hospitality (and gyros and raki!)

I love the diversity of the Greek islands, no one is the same. Corfu and Zakynthos are so lush and green, Crete has that dramatic mountainous landscape which takes your breath away. Next year I plan to go to Skiathos and Skopelos 🤞

And the Greek people are so humble, kind and generous.

I’m in Crete now and loving it. It’s huge though. It makes me want to see all of it which isn’t possible in two weeks. I think next island we do will be a smaller one that’s easier to travel around on. Maybe kefalonia.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 25/09/2022 18:34

We just got home from Crete last week and it was our first time visiting anywhere in Greece, oh my I am in love.

The island itself, the food, the people, everything was just incredible.

Whataretheodds · 25/09/2022 18:34

Any recommendations for places to stay? Hoping to go next week!

Cicadanymph · 25/09/2022 18:37

I’m in Kos at the moment, just fabulous. Food, hospitality, sea, beaches, people. I could go on. I was born in the wrong country

PollyCreo · 25/09/2022 18:43

@qwerty222 yes I found that the problem too! I did the Spinalonga excursion yesterday which was amazing but 2.5 hours on the coach each way 😲

NoraLuka · 25/09/2022 18:46

I went to Crete in August and absolutely loved it! I haven't travelled much at all and I'm embarrassed to say that I was petrified of going but it was so nice I hope I'll be able to go back one day. We met a British woman who has retired there and I was so jealous! Also I'm veggie and never normally like eating out at home in France but the food in Greece was so gorgeous!

qwerty222 · 25/09/2022 18:56

PollyCreo oh sounds like you might be up our end? We are in rethymno. We didn’t do Spinalonga as I’ve done it before (interesting though) but we did Samaria gorge which is a 14 hour day. We have a car which is good but still don’t want to be stuck in it too long. Hence why we decided against elafonisi actually. The beach in rethymno isn’t up to much but it’s got an interesting old town.

AlviesMam · 25/09/2022 18:57

I got married in santorini and it was just amazing. Just came back from Crete near rethymo which was so beautiful. I've visited kos and Rhodes too. Kefalonia is next on the list I think. I just love Greece Grin

Jconnais1chansonquivavsenerver · 25/09/2022 19:05

Syros! Go to Syros!

gobblefiend · 25/09/2022 19:17

Agreed. My first time to Greece this year (Corfu), loved it. We are going to Halkidiki next year and hope to visit lots more of the islands over the coming years

PollyCreo · 25/09/2022 19:23

@qwerty222 yes I was in Rethymno, only went for four days and was slightly unlucky with the weather 😅 The old town was beautiful though! I did the Samaria Gorge over 20 years ago, didn't fancy it again as a solo traveller in case I sprained my ankle and had to be rescued by a donkey 😱😂

Crete. Relaxed, organic folk. they just have ways of living that are timeless. You can fold into those ways.

That's an interesting comment (I mean that in a nice way!) I found the Cretans very unassuming and gentle.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/09/2022 19:46

We went to Crete for our last foreign holiday in 2019 before covid - we did a tour with an archaeologist guide but then had a couple of extra days to go back to Knossos at opening time before all the coaches get there and then spend ages in the Heraklion museum. Fabulous. Athens the year before that... even moreso!

Hoping to do a day skipper course somewhere in the greek islands next year and do some sailing. we've done shore based dinghy sailing from Greek islands in the past - Kefalonia, Paxos.... gorgeous.

PLEASE PLEASE put this sort of thread in the travel topic, so that when people are searching Mumsnet for travel ideas, and opt to search in travel, they don't miss out on your thread!

Travel is quite busy. You won't be left in No Man's Land with no one to talk to over there.

I concur. Although I did feel very emotional yesterday when I visited Spinalonga and almost screamed 😱

CeeJay81 · 25/09/2022 20:17

Totally agree. Chania and Rethymno, 2 wonderful places. If I won the lottery I'd have a 2nd home out there!

Meili04 · 25/09/2022 20:19

I've travelled extensively and it was my first time in Greece in August. It was absolutely stunning one of my favourite holidays and so so friendly.

Goatling · 25/09/2022 20:20

Went to Skiathos many years ago and loved it, the people, the food, the scenery, everything! Have a villa booked for Corfu next year and can't wait, if I could move to Greece I would in a heartbeat.
