DC can’t find accommodation in Manchester (not a student)

Very excited to have secured first job there. Young professional. But impossible to find a houseshare.

Might have to decline the job. Absolutely heartbroken.

Is it always this difficult?

Do they have to live in Manchester or can they live just outside and commute?

indigoemerald · 25/09/2022 17:38

There is a bit of a housing crisis in Manchester for student this year, and many have had to resort to taking rooms which would otherwise be occupied by working professionals.

Have they looked on Spare Room? There seem to be a lot of adverts on there, especially when broadening the search criteria to include suburbs such as Stockport.

ChesterManChester · 25/09/2022 17:38

Job is in city centre and no car so just looking at city centre.

Try some of the satellite towns on the metrolink routes. Easy commute into Manchester x

Tell them to look at Salford quays - easy metro link into the city centre that runs early and late, takes 15 ish minutes and is relatively affordable.

Blix · 25/09/2022 17:42

It's very difficult. One of my DC was months looking for somewhere in Leeds.
Have they tried Spareroom?
Or Openrent?

Openrent a bit better than estate agents because you can jump in quickly and communicate directly with landlord.
DS2 found a house share through spare room when he got his first job in a city. Second time of moving he wanted a flat and that was much harder, especially from a distance.
Any old uni friends in that area?

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 25/09/2022 17:43

Eccles is easy metro link into city centre. Good night life on doorstep in Monton too.
The busiest bus route in Europe is into mcr (don't know the number but its well known) buses every 5 minutes.
Don't give up and decline the job, public transport options aren't dire to all out of city locations you just have to know where the good ones are.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/09/2022 17:43

I was also going to say look at anywhere on the met routes. Stretford, Sale, Chorlton have decent night life and he will find rent so much cheaper than the city centre. Yes he'll have the pain of commuting but I know a couple of young professionals who have enjoyed the break from the noisy town centre.
What is his budget per month?

Blix · 25/09/2022 17:44

Cross posted with a few here. City centre isn't as crucial as you might think. Just make sure you are near a railway station.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/09/2022 17:44

Sorry meant also to ask what sites are you searching on?

MikeWozniaksMohawk · 25/09/2022 17:44

Yes would echo looking further out in Chorlton/Didsbury, sale, altrincham, Salford quays/mediacity - they all have good transport links into the city centre.

karmalama · 25/09/2022 17:47

Also worth filling out the wanted form on right move. We had a similar issue finding a flat for dd a few weeks ago as students had snaffled all the accommodation.
I filled out the right move thing and an estate agent contacted me before flat went onto rental market, so we could snap it up.

Hi OP

Lots of or

ivykaty44 · 25/09/2022 17:48

Job is in city centre and no car so just looking at city centre.

you don’t need a car to live in many places surrounding Manchester City Center as there are trains and trams to get about easily

dd used to commute in and what she paid for team each month she saved on ctax not living in city center

CreepyPasta · 25/09/2022 17:49

Sorry, posted too soon!

Lots of professional house shares on Trinity Way, it's classed as Salford but is a 10 minute walk to the city centre

pigalow27 · 25/09/2022 17:50

Even 30 years ago when I was a student lots of people, me included, lived in Chorlton, East Didsbury, Stretford, Sale etc and got public transport into the city centre. Fantastic transport links in Greater Manchester.

bellac11 · 25/09/2022 17:51

Why are people so reluctant to commute?

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 25/09/2022 17:53

Try the Chadderton side of Moston. I lived right across from Moston train station (classed as OL9 Chadderton) and that's a 10 minute train journey to Victoria station

ivykaty44 · 25/09/2022 17:55

Near 3 tram stops

ivykaty44 · 25/09/2022 17:57

Again near tram stops

bellac11 · 25/09/2022 18:04

Theres a lot of ensuite rooms on spareroom.com right in the centre. I dont know the area however. They seem cheaper than rightmove.

Skelligsfeathers · 25/09/2022 18:08

There's loads of stuff on spare room.
Why are you finding it so difficult? Is the budget tiny or something?

Eve · 25/09/2022 18:10

been through similar a month ago DS starting grad job other end of the country from us and couldn’t find anywhere.

I had visions of him being in a tent.

are there others starting? Can he ask employer to put him in contact to arrange shares?
