Very excited to have secured first job there. Young professional. But impossible to find a houseshare.

Might have to decline the job. Absolutely heartbroken.

Is it always this difficult?

Can’t he commute in? Lots of reasonably cheap towns 30/45 minutes from central Manchester by train?
it’s what most people have to do.

floppybit · 25/09/2022 18:16

Greater Manchester has excellent public transport, get a room just outside the city centre, there's loads going on in the inner suburbs so won't be boring. Also bear in mind that lots of ads that say Salford will be right next to the city centre

mumda · 25/09/2022 18:17

Look for tram routes. Tram is brilliant compared to the bus service.

Neverplayleapfrogwithaunicorn · 25/09/2022 18:17

My family are from that area.
try Bury as that has very good transportation links into Manchester.

Allywill · 25/09/2022 18:18

I live in Burnley which I appreciate might be a bit far out of Manchester but public transport links are good (40 mins by train and less than an hour by bus - buses every 20mins weekly ticket £35). Loads to rent around here. Maybe extended search to Bury?

Thestagshead · 25/09/2022 18:18

What’s his budget op?

Hi, my DS was in the same position about a month ago- he managed to get a house share just on the edge of Chorlton, is really happy there and it’s less than 15 minutes by tram (one every 5 mins or so) into the city centre. It did take some serious searching and a bit of luck though- tell her not to give up. He found that a lot of letting agents were unresponsive as they get so many enquires, try going to the sales team instead to get viewings arranged quickly.

bellac11 · 25/09/2022 18:26

Theres a lot of good options in Bury, right near tram stops

ThisIsNotAFlyingToy · 25/09/2022 18:29

What rent pm is he looking at?

dancinjo · 25/09/2022 18:32

Have you tried Stockport. It's a good train line to Manchester and only takes 10 minutes .

Igmum · 25/09/2022 18:33

I live in Manchester. Have just googled on my spare room.com and a few have turned up which are easy commutes into the city centre from Withington (studenty area great buses), Didsbury (middle class, lovely shops and restaurants, great buses, local trains and the metro) and Salford (Metro). Some are pretty pricey (North Manchester is much cheaper but less nice).

If you don't like looking online why not ask the new work colleagues whether anyone has a spare room or knows of anything suitable? Or book a hotel or Air bnb for the first week while you look.

Don't give up the job, Manchester is massive and a great place to live. You will find something

Whiskeypowers · 25/09/2022 18:42

Chorlton, Didsbury and Altrincham / Hale will be v expensive In terms of south of city centre
second Stretford it’s v close to Cholrton and on the tram line or possibly Urmston too? Sale a bit cheaper than Altrincham but again and good bus routes into central Manchester

North in less familiar with but certainly Salford v close and Bury does indeed have great transport links

ChesterManChester · 25/09/2022 19:06

Thanks so much for the local knowledge!

We were originally hoping she would be financially independent once working but we’ve now offered to help with an extra £200 or so a month just for the first year, so budget health ish - it’s just the lack of availability. Every time we call the agent they’ve already gone, so many people are looking.

It’s a very early contractual start time hence not wanting to spend too much time commuting. New job, new city, going into winter etc.

I live in Manchester and there’s absolutely no need to live in the city centre if that’s where she’s working.

Look at Chorlton, Didsbury, Sale, Brooklands, Eccles/Monton or tbh anywhere on the tram lines.

It’s perfectly normal round here to travel into the city centre for work, most of those places will be 30mins max on the tram.

ChesterManChester · 25/09/2022 19:37

Thank you

The train from Guide Bridge takes 8 mins to Manchester pic station, worth a look around that area.

hennaoj · 25/09/2022 20:02

Try somewhere like Hindley, 30 min train ride from Manchester. Plenty of cheap, small towns with Train stations near Manchester. Might not even have to share that way. I live in Hindley, it's quite nice.

Also here to suggest Stockport. Great place to live, the bar scene and independent shops etc are excellent now and the transport to Manchester is really good. Train 10 mins and all night bus down the A6.

AnyFucker · 25/09/2022 22:06

Prestwich has a young scene and is an easy commute to city centre

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 25/09/2022 23:10

@PauliesWalnuts hi! I lived on firwood park for a few years so used to be a bit closer to you!

ZenNudist · 25/09/2022 23:20

I tram it in from Stretford ( live in Urmston). It takes all of 15 mins. Trams every 6 mins.

Used to live in chorlton pre tram going in there. Used to bus it into town in 30mins. Easy peasy. Now its 15 mins or less on the tram and a great place to live.

All my uoung colleagues live in town seems an expensive way to rent to me. Better off living out of town and saving up more to buy a place.

Dartmoorcheffy · 25/09/2022 23:32

Bury is on the metrolink line. Easy commute into the city and has a great shopping centre, and fantastic market, easy access to motorways, decent bars and restaurants, and plenty of countryside on the doorstep too
