Overheard in Waitrose

Overheard in Waitrose today a couple talking about how they coped with the mortgage rates being 15% and that people are over reacting about the percentage creeping up. I was really trying not to say anything but loads of people lost their houses when the rates where are 15% in the 90s and I don’t think the rates need to even reach 5-10% now days before we see people loosing their house.

i just looked and our mortgage of just over £200k would be nearly £3k a month at 15%.

just to add fuel the fire they talked about the line up for strictly saying theirs someone disabled who will end up winning as they will get all the sympathy votes, if disabled people want to take part it should be against other disabled people so it fair. 🤯🤯🤯

Any other overheard in Waitrose stories?

Wasn't this 'Overheard in Waitrose' a thing some time back @Clockwatching54321 ?

It was a comedy sketch or a column somewhere.

Have you pinched the strapline? :)

Yes I think it started off on a radio station years ago then a Facebook group? I can’t quite remember

Do people actually believe this happened?

I'm astonished the OP was loitering long enough to hear all that.

@xsquared i should have stated we were in the cafe, they were sat behind us reading papers and having a coffee. Definitely didn’t follow them round the shop like a weirdo hahahah

So you overheard people in a café holding different views to your own. It's nothing to do with Waitrose.
Fortunately, we live in a democracy, we have free speech, and views differ.
Just tune them out and get on with your life.
Also the "Overheard in Waitrose" thing contains some very funny stories usually.

If I were you, OP, I’d have sited this imaginary conversation next to the Waitrose Essentials range, so you could have fitted in a crack about Waitrose Essential Quail Eggs along with the cod-economics and ableism.

@Psychogeography I really wish I was making this up, I was a bit surprised by their opinions. I honestly thought people like this were made or exaggerated.

I don't know why you're surprised by their opinions.
Surely you know that people have differing political views?

Crikeyalmighty · 24/09/2022 11:28

@Notcontent absolutely! I shop only at M&S and Waitrose , am queen of yellow stickers and 3 for '£8 etc- and don't seem to spend anymore than people on here do- I don't buy snacks though or cakes or the general shit that people on here are always comparing prices on - if you are hungry between meals, we eat toast or fruit or a yoghurt.

told to buy Spanish tomatoes instead of African because did I really want those people growing them. So tbh I can believe a lot.

No. But in Lidl today I was standing next to someone who overwhelming stank of weed. I said to my son how strong the smell was. I said to my son back at the car you wouldn't get that in Waitrose.

There was an overwhelming stink of weed near my local Morrison's the other evening. But aren't most controlled drug users middle class these days?

As for interest rates, I am younger than a "boomer" but I remember my parents paying those sorts of percentages.

I wonder if it was my mum giving the advice about Dutch tomatoes, she will only ever buy local...though I can't think of a Coop near her.

Really? Someone actually told you, a stranger, that in a shop?

They have a point about the sympathy vote. Although not that they should be only up against other disabled people!

and as for their comments re rates… either not true or they sound as thick as shit. Simple as that really.
