Overheard in Waitrose

Overheard in Waitrose today a couple talking about how they coped with the mortgage rates being 15% and that people are over reacting about the percentage creeping up. I was really trying not to say anything but loads of people lost their houses when the rates where are 15% in the 90s and I don’t think the rates need to even reach 5-10% now days before we see people loosing their house.

i just looked and our mortgage of just over £200k would be nearly £3k a month at 15%.

just to add fuel the fire they talked about the line up for strictly saying theirs someone disabled who will end up winning as they will get all the sympathy votes, if disabled people want to take part it should be against other disabled people so it fair. 🤯🤯🤯

Any other overheard in Waitrose stories?

I shop in Waitrose but don't vote Tory so I don't know if my story will be welcome but I was once stood looking at the headlines of the paper and two old people starting bitching and moaning about how rude I was to be blocking their way. I smiled, said 'you should try excuse me next time' and walked off. Fucking Waitrose customers.

justasking111 · 23/09/2022 21:51

Well the OP didn't get the decade right for high interest rates on mortgages

Crazykatie · 23/09/2022 21:53

It was tough and scary when interest rates were 15% but remember inflation was 25% wages rose fast and most of us were OK. Today the conditions are similar, we havn’t got the wage rises yet but they will have to come. Todays budget is going to make inflation worse, if your wages don’t pay the mortgage change jobs.

I haven't heard anything like that in Aldi Grin

But you wouldn't have said that about Aldi. You'd have said you heard it at the Supermarket.

It's something I've noticed.
Most people: "I'm going to the shops" or "I'm off to the supermarket".
Waitrose customers: "I'm going to Waitrose". 🤣🤣🤣

MyStarBoy · 23/09/2022 21:59

After that, you really should switch to Aldi 😂

AdamRyan · 23/09/2022 22:00

My personal favourite was after brexit, in November. An older person saying it would be good to get back to buying seasonal veg....in the fruit aisle putting strawberries in their trolley 😂

Well the OP didn't get the decade right for high interest rates on mortgages

In 1989-90 BoE base rate was around 14% mortgages were around 2% higher, there was a similar peak 10yrs earlier.

Ffsjustltb · 23/09/2022 22:05

Overheard in Wetherspoons from a very tired but glamorous looking youngish mum who said to her friend: 'Basically, at this stage, I am just held together with hairspray and eyelash glue' Had to laugh 😃 .

@MrAutumnal So is it relevant this was said in Waitrose because we are meant to think everyone who shops there is a dick?

No - it means anyone who can afford to shop in Waitrose must be a Tory and therefore their opinion doesn't count. 😁

Not everyone who shops in Waitrose is a Tory!

In the 80s a house on average cost around 25K, now it's 250K (I'm being very rough in my numbers on purpose here). Boomers have very little understanding of compound interest. I'm in my 40s and I know for certain that the 20 year olds are having a far worst time trying to get on property ladder than anyone else in the last 75 years. Boomers didn't have a housing criss because of the spurge on 1920-> 1930 housing.

Worse

Princessglittery · 23/09/2022 22:09

The comments were unacceptable. In particular the ableist comments.

I recall interest rates much higher than today. I also recall I did not have to find money for:

  • Broadband
  • Mobile Phone
  • SkyTV/Netflix/Amazon Prime
  • iPad’s/tablets/PCs/kindled
  • Coffee
  • Takeaways - rare occurrence
  • Meals out - rare occurrence
  • Destination weddings - lower cost for guests
  • Hen/stag weekends - bit more than a normal night out
  • Baby showers/Gender reveal parties
  • Holidays were more modest.
  • Regularly replacing functional items e.g. washing machines, TVs etc. which these days seem to have in built obsolescence.
  • Christmas was not the orgy of over consumption it is today, Christmas Eve boxes etc.
I am sure there is loads more.

I am not saying it isn’t hard for people today to save a deposit, pay higher interest rates etc., but there is definitely far more things that people spend their income on.

xsquared · 23/09/2022 22:19

Do people actually believe this happened?

I'm astonished the OP was loitering long enough to hear all that.

SpinCityBlue · 23/09/2022 22:22

Boomers stole all the air

Banrockmystation · 23/09/2022 22:23

I do like Waitrose though. When I go, it’s for just bits or special things. I instantly feel calm there. It’s lovely.
misses point of thread

Ooh those horrible boomers shopping in Waitrose with their opinions. I bet they'd have a field day about education nowadays as well and how no one can spell simple words like 'losing'.

😂😂😂

I shop in Waitrose and am proud to say that I have never voted Tory 😊

I think you missed avocado from your 'it's young people's own fault they can't buy a house' list.

TittleTattleOh · 23/09/2022 22:31

Are they not allowed to have an opinion?”

“Well of course they can. And op can react to that opinion. And you can have an opinion on that reaction. And then I can have an opinion on your opinion. And eventually MN will eat itself. What larks, eh?”

Brilliant! 🥂

They sound like my parents...

justasking111 · 23/09/2022 22:36

A lot was built after both world wars. They built so fast that the wood wasn't seasoned which caused other problems.

Baby boomers borrowing money was harder because a woman's salary wasn't taken into account when borrowing because well you know we weren't as reliable with getting pregnant and all that.

Women couldn't get hire purchase goods the Man had to sign up for the sofa, car, carpets etc

My DS worked out the other day that our first home was eight times OH salary it would be eleven times now. But the little woman is taken into account.

This causes a huge surge in house prices.

Planning was different after the war government compulsory purchase of huge areas of land. No-one talked of TPOs bats, great crested newts, SSSIs . Land is very expensive, as is getting planning NIMBYism is a hobby for many.

The government cut through the red tape for HS2 They could do it for housing but don't.
