Overheard in Waitrose

Overheard in Waitrose today a couple talking about how they coped with the mortgage rates being 15% and that people are over reacting about the percentage creeping up. I was really trying not to say anything but loads of people lost their houses when the rates where are 15% in the 90s and I don’t think the rates need to even reach 5-10% now days before we see people loosing their house.

i just looked and our mortgage of just over £200k would be nearly £3k a month at 15%.

just to add fuel the fire they talked about the line up for strictly saying theirs someone disabled who will end up winning as they will get all the sympathy votes, if disabled people want to take part it should be against other disabled people so it fair. 🤯🤯🤯

Any other overheard in Waitrose stories?

OP posts:

'Oscar! Behave or you won't have sushi for lunch'.

Yes! That was one of them, Maybe we could find a lot more to amuse ourselves at the end of the week instead of taking pot shots along fairly predictable lines.

Of course they are but not when they're bashing disabled people. Just makes them assholes.

Pair of cunts. Absolutely

So is it relevant this was said in Waitrose because we are meant to think everyone who shops there is a dick? In which case you are according to that stereotype. Or is this a very boring anecdote that could have (and probably does) happen at any supermarket?

I think the mention of Waitrose is meant to double underline that people who shop in naice supermarkets like Waitrose are out of touch with normal mortals' struggles. All the lazy stereotypes are out in force tonight!

Never heard in Waitrose "I haven't got enough money for that, I'll have to put it back".

Come with me, you'll hear Bloody hell, I'm not paying that! Having said that there are a few things I buy which are more expensive at Morrisons than Waitrose.

Who shops in Waitrose these days ?

I was today. Next time I’ll take my EarPods. Drown out the performance parenting.

No, but a lady in our coop told me not to buy Dutch tomatoes because "they only put water in them". No idea who 'they' are (maybe Dutch farmers?) or why they are putting anything at all into tomatoes.

It's basically true, they are grown 'hydroponically' that is without soil.
It's why, I think, Dutch tomatoes tasteless. 🍅

Mojitoo · 23/09/2022 21:27

No - it means anyone who can afford to shop in Waitrose must be a Tory and therefore their opinion doesn't count

Jeez. Steady on. Most people I know shop at Waitrose, and it's unlikely that many of them votes Tory.

Just need to get that out there Grin

IncessantNameChanger · 23/09/2022 21:30

No. But in Lidl today I was standing next to someone who overwhelming stank of weed. I said to my son how strong the smell was. I said to my son back at the car you wouldn't get that in Waitrose.

Who shops in Waitrose these days ?

Quite a lot of people. It is the only supermarket we have nearby. Nearest other supermarket would be 6 miles away (and require 2 changes of bus for those without transport).

Ooh those horrible boomers shopping in Waitrose with their opinions. I bet they'd have a field day about education nowadays as well and how no one can spell simple words like 'losing'.

😂😂😂

Moonshine5 · 23/09/2022 21:33

OP I believe there's a Twitter page or Reddit maybe called "overheard in Waitrose". It's been around for years.

Boomers have very little understanding of compound interest

My O level Maths paper (1969) had a compound interest question in £sd. There were no calculators then.

Excellent response!

Clarissa111 · 23/09/2022 21:34

I actually work in waitrose. In a service station. I've been there 2 years. I've never heard these sort of conversations. In fact, most customers are normal, friendly, and sometimes shocked at the prices!

PickAChew · 23/09/2022 21:36

My trip to Waitrose today was nowhere near as entertaining. The high point might have been a man standing 2' to the left of me coughing and turning out to have breath like shit. There's no wonder the store is closing.

ShowOfHands · 23/09/2022 19:54

Well of course they can. And op can react to that opinion. And you can have an opinion on that reaction. And then I can have an opinion on your opinion. And eventually MN will eat itself. What larks, eh?

😁Brilliant!

catsnore · 23/09/2022 21:38

In my local Waitrose it's very down to earth and is mainly farmers and people talking about cows. However, in a Waitrose in a posher area (ahem, Oxfordshire, ahem) I was attacked by a very entitled lady trying to get past me to the grapes.... literally tried to ram me out the way with her trolley. I was pushing my daughter in her buggy too 😱

IncessantNameChanger · 23/09/2022 21:41

Omg I wonder if its even possible to post without a few posts in "what do you expect when you vote tory?! Shame on you"

I think I've got gentail warts - that what you get for voting tory!

Dh has been shaging my sister - well that's what happens when you vote tory!

My cat died today after being locked in shed - you asked for this when you voted tory!

My mum has dementia- well you shouldn't have voted tory!

My local lib dem councilor wants to build luxury flats on our historic, market town car park - what do you expect when your town voted these tory scum in? Shame on you!

Putin? - you voted for this because of fucking tory!

My toddler fell over - karma because she voted tory.

Piss off kier, get a hobby!

Can we mix it up for democracy?

I had great anal - that's because you voted Labour? No?

JuliaDorney · 23/09/2022 21:45

Wasn't this 'Overheard in Waitrose' a thing some time back @Clockwatching54321 ?

It was a comedy sketch or a column somewhere.

Have you pinched the strapline? :)

And this is why I read crap threads like this. There's always a little gem hidden away

WildfellAnne · 23/09/2022 21:50

I don’t know anyone who shops at Waitrose. I’ve no idea where the nearest Waitrose is. I live in a very expensive area.
