Must buys when on holiday in Scotland

We are going to Scotland for a week on Friday, and wondered what things we should buy when there to bring home. We are staying in Kyle across the water from Skye, so interested in things from that area in particular, but also from other areas we should look out for which we might be able to find in shops near us. Many thanks.

Empire Biscuits

@Itsmeagainyes I should probably be thrown out of Scotland because it’s Diet Irn Bru I drink! I like having teeth Grin

Violettaa · 21/09/2022 21:20

Harris gin is lovely, and comes in the most beautiful bottles.

Pretty sure 50% of my body weight is made up of their pickled onion ones. So good. Dipped into a glass of milk, sounds so wrong but tastes so right!

HOW the monumental feck did you discover that???Shock

Irn bru now tastes like crap since they took out the sugar I'm afraid.

You can buy the original stuff in a glass bottle.

I’ve never seen a deep fried mars bar anywhere in Scotland, there must be more chance of finding the Loch Ness monster. There’s a wee shop in Skye that sells nice soap and bath stuff. I love any kind of soap bar with oatmeal in it, makes your skin lovely and soft.

hippityhop80 · 21/09/2022 21:27

Ps the house is beautiful!

TeddyTed · 21/09/2022 21:27

If you are heading past Loch Lomond on the A82 at all I’d say stop at Luss Stores and pick up some of their lovely candles and diffusers. I have the geranium and bergamot diffuser in my living room now and it’s gorgeous, I wish I’d bought in bulk to last me til I next to go Scotland next year.

I've been a crisp dipper since a kid. Pombears dipped in milk was my gateway drug to sensations, mackies etc all dipped in a cup of milk.
Come on over to the darkside it's delicious

Also Edinbane pottery is so pretty!

Eye wateringly expensive though, I was in there the other day.

If you're staying in Glenelg OP, don't miss the fish & chips at the pub.

Assuming you're in self catering, pick up a Stuart's steak pie from the Co-op at Kyle, they're fab.

Someone mentioned Cath Waters earlier. She has a shop at Dunvegan now. And there's an Alpaca shop a couple of doors down.

Bratnews · 21/09/2022 21:40

Skyeskyns, you can visit them on Skye - not everyone’s cup of tea but the fleeces are lovely - one on a chair would help keep you warm this winter!

Oh I'm so jealous I have such beautiful memories of Skye. All ghosts now.
Have a lovely time op.

Pinksmyfavoritecolour · 21/09/2022 21:44

I was going to say about luss stores too, if you pass it on route, nice gifts, delicious cakes, and had an amazing strawberry milkshake from a van outside it. We also stayed on a campsite there in our camper van and it was beautiful. Skye was beautiful, so was Harris and Lewis, but our favourite was the uists, benbecula and Berneray. Caim candles shop on the uists was a wonderful find.

Home Bargains sell the glass bottle Irn Bru.

Get the Irn Bru with the "1901" label. Full sugar 👍

weebarra · 21/09/2022 21:59

Isle of Skye candles
I bought a beautiful print from Orbost Gallery
Scotland in general: square sausage, proper black pudding, gin!

Moonatics · 21/09/2022 22:03

Square sausage, I'm not keen on sausages in general, but my word these are nice.
Other than that
Whisky
A sporran but i dont know why.
A kilt, again why?
A tartan scarf, at least useable
Shortbread, pick a tin or box you like the look of.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 21/09/2022 22:07

I can't remember if it's called drumgray or dumgray but it's essentially Scottish Baileys that glides down your throat.

FlamingGoat · 21/09/2022 22:09

There's lovely shops in Portree. Look out for the local ceramics. Also a little gift shop in Broadford by the coop that sells Heather Gem jewelry.
I second Skye candles too.

Ah Luss. Love the place.

OP if you are that way then just before you get to Luss another stop is Loch Lomand Shores. The shops themselves are not that great for a designer outlet, but sometimes they have a farmer’s market that will have lots of Scottish delicacies

If you are driving alongside Loch Lomand, another good pit stop is the Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum. Not much there but good place to stop for petrol and to stretch your legs. The Green Welly Stop itself is a massive gift shop where you can get lots of (cheesy) Scottish merchandise

Bicthebiro · 21/09/2022 22:17

Empire biscuits
Red cola
Them cakes that are like fondant fancies with pineapple on top
Edinburgh Castle Rock

My kids keep asking me to take them on a road trip to the motherland just to buy all this stuff!

Pineapple tarts!

And to add to this cake theme…

Snowballs (the ones from a bakery are nicer than Tunnocks)
But talking about Tunnocks you need to get some tea cakes
They also do caramel logs and caramel wafers that I am not a fan of but give them a try

I think I need to book a trip home soon…

TheTeddyBears · 21/09/2022 22:26

Aw it's got to be square sausage! Bloody amazing. Proper stuff though Preferably from butchers or steak Lorne if from supermarket. Aldi actually have a lot of good local produce.

Get yourself a crispy morning roll (Mortens), square sausage and can of irn bru, yummy!

Tablet is also very good though and black pudding.

pheonixrebirth · 21/09/2022 22:26

Tablet and dumpling, it's a steamed fruit pudding and it is amazing. Traditionally you are supposed to sprinkle some salt on it. Food of the gods!
