Must buys when on holiday in Scotland

We are going to Scotland for a week on Friday, and wondered what things we should buy when there to bring home. We are staying in Kyle across the water from Skye, so interested in things from that area in particular, but also from other areas we should look out for which we might be able to find in shops near us. Many thanks.

Stornaway black pudding from Charles McCleod , so much tastier than the English

Home made tablet, local shortbread is often lovely, local gin is often very nice. The fish can be very fresh as it's often caught locally on the west coast.

They do - but you can get other crisp flavours and chocolate in Scotland.

Pretty sure 50% of my body weight is made up of their pickled onion ones. So good. Dipped into a glass of milk, sounds so wrong but tastes so right!

I spent 2 blissful weeks in Scotland over summer.

I bought a sequinned thistle Christmas decoration, & some whisky from Skye.

TheClitterati · 21/09/2022 20:33

I bought some tablet in Scotland and was thrilled to find it is what we made & called fudge as kids in nz.

Ive never understood why fudge outside of nz was so soft and smooth. And now I know.

grafittiartist · 21/09/2022 20:35

I always bring back my guilty pleasure- a macaroni pie!
Sorry that's not very sophisticated!

TheClitterati · 21/09/2022 20:35

Also my kids had Irun Bru and both said how strange it was to have banana flavoured soda.

Reading the ingredients we saw it is indeed flavoured with banana essence. Not that Scottish 😬

Very Educational trip.

Have a look at cathwaters.com/ She’s based on Skye and her stuff is lovely. There used to be a shop in Kyle called The Kyle Art Market but I’m not sure if it’s still there. The Studio in Plockton does lovely art and jewellery too. There’s the Raasay Distillery for whisky and gin as well.

Daisy38 · 21/09/2022 20:41

And there’s Ragamuffin in Armadale on Skye too for knitwear and gifts.

BluebellsareBlue · 21/09/2022 20:47

Do you mean Kyle of Lochalsh OP? Not sure the locals would like to hear it just being called Kyle.

Tattie Scones to take home
Original stornoway black pudding
Butteries, just lather some real butter on the bottom and eat it, amazing.
Tablet as been said before (But I just make my own)
Macaroon bars
And for something really nice for yourself, get a nice tartan scarf.

  1. Tablet

ad infinitum...

We really enjoyed a visit to SkyeWeavers and stocked up on Christmas presents for family.

FatMog · 21/09/2022 20:48

Went to Edinburgh once (I know it's not the same!) and fell in love with lorne (square) sausage. I've tried Scottish butchers in the South, and online, but it's not the same...and YES the black pudding is far superior!

Non-food: cloth, woollens (the proper stuff not the imported nonsense), and maybe a stuffed toy highland cow?

Lochroy · 21/09/2022 20:49

Rowies!!!

hobbledyhoy · 21/09/2022 20:49

PP has beaten me to it but you need to have a square sausage and tattie scone in a morning roll.
Breakfast of the gods!

stargirl1701 · 21/09/2022 20:51

Isle of Harris gin!

NotMeNoNo · 21/09/2022 20:51

Have a look at Strom (shop). I have some Gilly Langton jewellery, she is based in Plockton but I think they sell it.
Agree with Isle of Skye candles.

user9825401 · 21/09/2022 20:51

Sausage supper (2 sausages as standard)

Deep fried Mars bar

Tablet if you're into that but I hate the stuff

A see you Jimmy hat. Everyone loves them for some reason.

HauntersGonnaHaunt · 21/09/2022 20:55

Where in Skye sells deep fried mars bars?

starsareblazing · 21/09/2022 20:55

Raasay whisky and gin are so delicious, you can buy them on Skye but the distillery on Raasay itself is gorgeous and definitely worth a visit. You can get the ferry from Skye and it’s only a 5/10 min walk to the distillery, they do great tours and tastings, and they can go on to Raasay House Hotel which does a great fish and chips! x

starsareblazing · 21/09/2022 20:56

*then can

nevertoooldforindie · 21/09/2022 20:56

Tattie scones. And Scottish plain bread. Makes best toast ever

marsdon · 21/09/2022 20:57

When I go I love the woollen shops I usually bring back a nice jumper and always something tartan either a scarf or a throw or a shawl

starsareblazing · 21/09/2022 20:58

Also Edinbane pottery is so pretty!

Itsmeagainyes · 21/09/2022 20:59

Irn bru now tastes like crap since they took out the sugar I'm afraid.
