the best place to live if only can afford £300K for buying a house?

hello everyone.
recently My DH found a full 5-day WFH job. And as I quit my job for my DC, now just have some freelance job. So we don't have to stay in London anymore.

we both don't like crowded places, living in London is just for work.
We never live in other cities before, not sure if we can fit in.

Now I live in London in a 2-bedroom flat.

And I really want to move into a house with a decent garden, at least 3 bedrooms, as the second baby is coming and My DH need a room for his home office.

And I need a good school catchment!!
good primary school (maybe move again for a good secondary school 5 years later?)
or give up primary school, only target good secondary school.

I have a look many many places, £300K is really not enough.

  1. three bedroom house
  2. garden (I am happy maybe just 300 ft )
  3. in good school Catchment
  4. good area, less crime and less racism

Any recommend? thanks a lot

I'd probably look towards the North East, perhaps around York/ Scarborough, Durham something like that.

Yes I thought this too.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 18/09/2022 14:26

garden (I am happy maybe just 300 ft was this a typo or are you actually looking for a 100-metre-long garden? Because that’s your problem with finding somewhere, if so.

TooHotToTangoToo · 18/09/2022 14:27

North Nottinghamshire

TakeMeToKernow · 18/09/2022 14:28

I’m biased as it’s my home location, but I’d recommend Nottingham :) plenty of nice parts of nottingham where you could find your new family home for that sort of money

ifoundthebread · 18/09/2022 14:28

Decor needs some tlc as not modern but for 300k can have 5 beds and a garden.

Underscore21 · 18/09/2022 14:29

Do you have any ties to any other parts of England OP?

spicysoup · 18/09/2022 14:29

Northumberland is a good shout - specifically Hexham or Morpeth for good schools.

jackstini · 18/09/2022 14:29

Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire Or further north

Scotland?

TakeMeToKernow · 18/09/2022 14:29

@TooHotToTangoToo has a good point, looking to the north of the city and the north notts towns will have better value than the south I suspect.

qpmz · 18/09/2022 14:30

There's loads in that price range in Midlands/Worcestershire. Do a search within 5 or 10 miles of Kidderminster.

LionessesRules · 18/09/2022 14:33

I think you will struggle with your garden expectations.

Plenty of places that will do a 30ft garden, if that what you mean. House near us just sold 260k, 4 bed detached, garden, garage, drive. Walking distance to outstanding primaries and an outstanding secondary.

TakeMeToKernow · 18/09/2022 14:33

In fact, here’s a specific Notts name for you: Calverton. It’s not too big, surrounded by countryside, easy distance to Nottingham, homes in your price range :)

Lots of quiet villages, newark will get you into London in just over an hour and a half

My thoughts exactly 🤨

Misandre · 18/09/2022 14:37

Did you really mean 300ft garden? If so maybe stop looking in cities.

TickledOnion · 18/09/2022 14:39

I’m guessing OP meant 300 sq ft.

Sarahcoggles · 18/09/2022 14:42

Loads of midlands villages/small towns are near M1 and near cities and you can get a good size house with garden for that money.

BarkylLoner · 18/09/2022 14:43

Fife

Cuddlywuddlies · 18/09/2022 14:52

Cumbria?

Near amazing schools, beaches, near both Liverpool and Chester. That would be my pick.

Jogonlogonpip · 18/09/2022 14:54

Somewhere in Scotland

You wont get anything in York for £300k. I just sold me 3 bed with no garden for £467,000 in the outskirts of city centre. York prices are crazy.

bare · 18/09/2022 14:58

This looks lovely. Near the sea, Downs and get back to London if you need to
