the best place to live if only can afford £300K for buying a house?

happyfishcoco · 18/09/2022 14:20

hello everyone.
recently My DH found a full 5-day WFH job. And as I quit my job for my DC, now just have some freelance job. So we don't have to stay in London anymore.

we both don't like crowded places, living in London is just for work.
We never live in other cities before, not sure if we can fit in.

Now I live in London in a 2-bedroom flat.

And I really want to move into a house with a decent garden, at least 3 bedrooms, as the second baby is coming and My DH need a room for his home office.

And I need a good school catchment!!
good primary school (maybe move again for a good secondary school 5 years later?)
or give up primary school, only target good secondary school.

I have a look many many places, £300K is really not enough.

  1. three bedroom house
  2. garden (I am happy maybe just 300 ft )
  3. in good school Catchment
  4. good area, less crime and less racism

Any recommend? thanks a lot

Of, given you cannot lie out full length with a partner, a chaste longue!

🤣 I'm off to Google. I need one of those.

Sorry, I meant wouldn't recommend Wales as regards educational standards.

How very rude.

Norfolk any good?
Very quiet for sure. Fits your budget.

DancingDragonfly · 18/09/2022 19:06

North Yorkshire/North East

BloodyCamping · 18/09/2022 20:50

What are you wanting? A village? A town? Suburbs? In the sticks? Hills? Left or right leaning? Sea side? Transport links? Family location?

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/09/2022 20:54

Definitely look at the north east. Anything near Newcastle or Sunderland will be good for train links to London if you still need to check in with work or family or friends there or there are flights from Newcastle and possibly Teesside. That budget can get you a decent sized 3 or 4 bed house with a garden, detached in some areas.

Near amazing schools, beaches, near both Liverpool and Chester. That would be my pick.

I live very near to this place and can confirm its lovely. Knew it would be Wirral before I clicked the link. So yes Wirral you can get a four bed detached house for £300k, close to the sea, plenty of good schools.

Scotland.

thesugarbumfairy · 18/09/2022 21:02

Out of interest i had a look near me. This cutie character property is for sale. Near three good primaries and two secondaries. www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/124251131#

Such an open question OP. Do you have a preference of atleast the region of the UK?

Whipmawhopma · 18/09/2022 21:05

Barleysugar86 · 18/09/2022 14:23

I'd probably look towards the North East, perhaps around York/ Scarborough, Durham something like that.

You won't get anything with three bedrooms and a garden in a decent catchment area in York for £300k. You might, if you are prepared to do some work, get one of those things for that price.

This, for example, is in a good catchment area, but doesn't tick your other boxes: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/126294743#/?channel=RES_BUY

Another one saying Lincoln

Isithotinhere · 19/09/2022 00:54

Northern Ireland is likely to have a very divisive debate/demand for a referendum on unity with Ireland soon, could be difficult for you and your kids in school.

There hasn't been a government for months, it's not really a functioning state. It is generally very safe, and the people are friendly, but there are flash points still.

I don't think it's worth the hassle, lots of places in the UK - though in Scotland there's the issue of independence and in Wales the language to learn - so England?

Norfolk is hit and miss for secondary school performance.

You say you want somewhere quiet, but I’d have an eye on long term employment opportunities. You’ve given up your job, and gone freelance. Is that well paid freelance that’s likely to be sustainable and can be done from anywhere?

Darlington, Northallerton and Eaglescliffe also have good train links with London.

I don't think there is a flight from Teesside though.

Northern ireland - we bought a sizeable house with several acres of land for a good bit less than that several years ago. Cost of living here is significantly lower and if you can get past the fact that the weather can be pretty crap it’s not a bad place to live!

GrunkleStan · 19/09/2022 08:48

Wirral. Some areas don't have large gardens tho.

Thanks for everyone's answer! will have a look for someplace I haven't checked before.

York is the place I quite like, been there for days.
and surely already check the house price, not something I can afford.

Posted too early! This is an example near me in Doncaster South Yorkshire. It's a village call
ed Bessacar, 2 really good primary schools in the area and its walking distance to both. The high school is a 10 min walk with no major roads to cross. 10 min drive to the M18 and the A1. Its about 5 minute drive into Doncaster, 25 to Sheffield which has a big shopping centre.

Heidi30 · 19/09/2022 09:08

South Tyneside such as South Shields (just been voted the best beach in the uk) lovely properties and spacious for your money

already checked Norfolk, House price is at least £3XXK, (around good schools) a bit out of my budget but will be on my watch list.

my freelance job wasn't paid well but can be done from anywhere anytime.
and may wish to start some business like doing photography in Local area.
