the best place to live if only can afford £300K for buying a house?

hello everyone.
recently My DH found a full 5-day WFH job. And as I quit my job for my DC, now just have some freelance job. So we don't have to stay in London anymore.

we both don't like crowded places, living in London is just for work.
We never live in other cities before, not sure if we can fit in.

Now I live in London in a 2-bedroom flat.

And I really want to move into a house with a decent garden, at least 3 bedrooms, as the second baby is coming and My DH need a room for his home office.

And I need a good school catchment!!
good primary school (maybe move again for a good secondary school 5 years later?)
or give up primary school, only target good secondary school.

I have a look many many places, £300K is really not enough.

  1. three bedroom house
  2. garden (I am happy maybe just 300 ft )
  3. in good school Catchment
  4. good area, less crime and less racism

Any recommend? thanks a lot

Look north - it's gorgeous up here

As well as the north east, think about the North west:
Around Lancaster - two of the best grammar schools in the UK
Preston (but not sure of schools)
On the north west coast - you'll get a look for your money in Morecambe, but it's not as nice as Lancaster

How about the Isle of Arran in Scotland.

North East Wales

Titsflyingsouth · 18/09/2022 15:10

Lincoln is a lovely place and house prices are very reasonable.

FKATondelayo · 18/09/2022 15:11

I agree with Worcestershire. Lots of good schools, Worcester has 3 stations that go direct to London in 2hrs 20 and easy access to very urban and very rural areas depending on the mood you're in. Only warning is that some areas can be a bit floody so research.

generalh · 18/09/2022 15:13

Lots of places in Wales 😁😊

Reluctantadult · 18/09/2022 15:14

You'll get a 3 bed for that in Gloucestershire or Worcestershire but not in all parts and you'll struggle with that garden criteria.

Chipsahoy · 18/09/2022 15:14

Scotland. I got two acres and farmhouse for that last year.

CakeCrumbs44 · 18/09/2022 15:15

300k will buy you a house pretty much anywhere outside of London.

Thehonestbadger · 18/09/2022 15:20

I’d recommend the commuter towns/villages around York (avoid Selby though) and if you don’t mind being close to Hull then Beverley is beautiful and has really lovely schools, they’re pretty much all fantastic around Beverley and it’s a very pretty place

Ea134 · 18/09/2022 15:23

Merseyside has loads! We paid £320,000 for a 5 bed with big garden last year. Great school catchment (we’re both teachers so knew a bit of what to look for!) and really near to the beach and city centre

GiantKitten · 18/09/2022 15:24

My daughter recently bought very near here - nicest part of Bury, which is on the Manchester tram system, good schools, dead handy for loads of shopping centres.

The North East i.e. Northumbria. Property and the general cost of living is cheap. It's beautiful up there with beaches, forests, moors, lots of pretty villages and towns and other places of interest. Plus Newcastle and Durham are within driving distance.

No it won't!
There's quite a few areas of UK where you'll not get a house with garden In good areas with low crime and good schools for under 300k

Mannymoomin · 18/09/2022 15:40

I’m in Lincoln, and although house prices have risen loads here in the last couple of years, they are still cheap.
For what you’re after, you’d easily get something within your price range and change left!
The city is great, the schools are fantastic, it’s cheap, it’s safe, it’s friendly, no crime.
There are some lovely villages and an hour away from the coast.
Roads are pretty shit and if you want to get anywhere outside of Lincolnshire you’ll have to add 45 mins to your journey, but then London is 90 minutes direct train from Newark so not too much off the beaten track.
Like anywhere there are some awful places to live here, but mostly it’s wonderful.

I’m guessing OP meant 300 sq ft.

yeah..... sorry for the confused.
I mean
just 300 sq ft
not 300 ft long......lol
I can't even imagine it

thanks for point it out
Because when I saw first, second replies, make me thought 300 sq ft is an unreasonable request

Near amazing schools, beaches, near both Liverpool and Chester. That would be my pick.

wrong area of the Wirral for decent secondary schools.

Gr33ngr33ngr4ss · 18/09/2022 15:53

Lancashire. You'll get a lot for 300k. And good grammar schools & private schools as well as great state schools.

Lots of Lancs towns are old mill towns and the racial demographic is generally happily mixed.

Floralei · 18/09/2022 15:53

Don’t go to Scotland - more income tax, heinous politics, education etc. Lots of lovely parts of rural England to find.

Chicheguevara · 18/09/2022 16:00

Norfolk. Good train line into Liverpool Street form the Norwich area, or King’s Cross from the West Norfolk area. Good schools, colleges and University. There is a lot to be said for East Anglia.

HangerLaneGyratorySystem · 18/09/2022 16:00

That house on Arran is amazing!!

Wheredoestheblackfluffcomefrom · 18/09/2022 16:06

Oswestry

GarlicCrackers · 18/09/2022 16:08

York

We have excellent schools generally bar one dogshit high-school.

Good transport links, 2.5 hours to London on train

Just generally a nice place. Its more expensive than some northern places but it's because its pretty ace here

OldTinHat · 18/09/2022 16:15

Isle of Wight.
