I've just had a WhatsApp message from a number I don't know with my daughters name on it saying she dropped her phone down the loo and is now using this new number . I sent a couple of messages back and got no reply .
I called my daughters original number and she hasn't dropped her phone down the loo !
Has anyone else had this ?

I haven't but I work in the industry and this is a pretty well known scam.

Weirdlynormal · 17/09/2022 22:35

Well known scam

ZombieKettle · 17/09/2022 22:38

Well known scam. You did the right thing in calling her original number to check.

Here's a link to a Mirror article about it.

Yes I’ve had this. They’ll ask you to help them pay for a new phone and send pictures of the front and back of your credit card! Block and delete

Vapeyvapevape · 17/09/2022 22:38

What's the scam? Will they ask for money?

burnoutbabe · 17/09/2022 22:39

I got this on Wednesday. Luckily I have no kids do recognised it immediately as a scam

Noname9 · 17/09/2022 22:39

What is the scam though please? I had the same and called the phone. Got no answer. Then realised it might be faked and rang DS to discover is was fake. But what does it gain the scammer?

Always4Brenner · 17/09/2022 22:40

They ask you to transfer money to their account or give them your credit card details.

Vapeyvapevape · 17/09/2022 22:40

Oh here it is ! They've just asked for £1249.00 !

My poor friends dad did this. He lost 3000 before he realised!

SafeHeaven · 17/09/2022 22:41

racquel86 · 17/09/2022 22:42

That isn’t normal 🤔

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 17/09/2022 22:45

My friend had similar

she lost £200

Vapeyvapevape · 17/09/2022 22:45

Apparently she's bought a laptop on Afterpay (whatever that is) I've messaged with lots of questions about why did she needs a new laptop, she shouldn't go wasting so much money !

Yes it's well known. My DD was away abroad with her BF. The BF's DM got this text and ended up sending £1500. She was scammed.

1994girl · 17/09/2022 22:48

Boyfriend had it two days ago.

RaininSummer · 17/09/2022 22:49

Seems very common right now. I had it last week and two colleagues also mentioned it. They don't know your children's names usually but when questioned come out with vague responses like 'the sweetest child'or 'the one who loves you most'. Block the grifters.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 17/09/2022 22:50

Blimey, how many people just send their kids £1500 if they message saying they have dropped their phone?

Vapeyvapevape · 17/09/2022 22:51

Actually, thinking about it, it might not have had her name on it . I saw the message and saved it under Daughter New Number so all the messages now have her name on . I was a bit panicked because she (scammers) said they'd lost all the photos and videos which meant dd lost the video where her dad says her name for the last time.
