I've just had a WhatsApp message from a number I don't know with my daughters name on it saying she dropped her phone down the loo and is now using this new number . I sent a couple of messages back and got no reply .
I called my daughters original number and she hasn't dropped her phone down the loo !
Has anyone else had this ?

This is from HSBC website
If you think you've been targeted
Call us straight away on 03457 404 4044, or +44 1226 261 0100 if you're outside the UK.
If you're a Premier customer, you can call us on: 03457 707 0700_.
You can also forward any suspicious emails or texts to us at [email protected]k_.

I'd give them a call straight away if you have time.

I tweeted HSBC , the reply this morning was to report it to Action Fraud .

@Vapeyvapevape I know! Even if it's not a crime, you'd think they'd want the intelligence (details of the WhatsApp account to share with Meta, bank account details of the mule/fraudster) to help build the picture of the scammers but they're so useless.

Seems so strange that they are able to literally look at this account and watch money being fraudulently paid into it without being bothered.

I have to admit that I absolutely LOVE wasting their time. I send back messages talking as though I'm talking to my daughter/son and drop in random names of non-existent family like"Did you remember to wish your aunt Mildred a happy birthday?" Grin
Question to those who know someone who was scammed via this route, did the bank reimburse the money without much fuss?

I love to drag scams out. Have you made any so angry that they sound like they're on the verge of tears?
It's just so beautiful.

Oh that lovely cursing and raging at you when you get all confused and they have to talk you through the whole thing again.
Or when you tell them you left the cash in an envelope in a certain fiction book at xx street library. They had better hurry if they want to go get it but as you know they (the person they're pretending to be) work next door they'll be able to. I'll always wonder if a scammer does ever travel to get that imaginary cash.

I suppose perhaps if no money has actually gone in, they have to guard against malicious accusations. E.g. person rings up saying their ex's bank details are being used in a scam, for revenge reasons.

Grrrpredictivetex · 18/09/2022 11:25

@Vapeyvapevape when they next text ask them to tell you your middle name. Doubt you'll hear from them after that.

LosttheremoteAGAIN · 18/09/2022 12:09

I’ve had loads of these-I never chat to mine on WhatsApp and if they need money, they ask and I ring them to confirm

anyway,my mil had one last week from from her dd asking for money for a new phone or laptop (I’m not clear) as hers had broken

her dd died 20 years ago from an illness called battens disease

she was in bits-and if I ever track the bastards down,I will rip their fucking head off

Vapeyvapevape · 18/09/2022 13:14

That's awful @LosttheremoteAGAIN , it's not just the lost money it's obviously the emotional distress these scams cause that's so vile.

@Vapeyvapevape
Also, don't forget to report the number where the scam text from. INFO HEREE*

"Report a text message you think is a scam"
"Most phone providers are part of a scheme that allows customers to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726. If you forward a text to 7726, your provider can investigate the origin of the text and arrange to block or ban the sender, if it’s found to be malicious."
"If 7726 doesn’t work, you can find out how to report a text message by contacting your phone provider".

EndTheMonacyNow · 18/09/2022 13:39

This is how to report a scam WhatsApp

Report a contact
1 Open the chat with the user you wish to report.
2 Tap More options > More > Report.
• Check the box if you would like to also block the user and delete messages in the chat.
3 Tap REPORT.
Note: WhatsApp receives the last five messages sent to you by the reported user or group, and they won’t be notified. WhatsApp also receives the reported group or user ID, information on when the message was sent, and the type of message sent (image, video, text, etc.).
You can also choose to report an account by long pressing a single message.
1 Long press an individual message and tap on the overflow menu.
2 The option to report the contact will appear along with a confirmation notification and the option to block.

EndTheMonacyNow · 18/09/2022 13:39

I copy and pasted that from WhatsApp

Vapeyvapevape · 18/09/2022 14:22

I've reported to WhatsApp and 7726

OP
This is the message I got from Action Fraud

Home Office Counting Rules set out the circumstances under which we can record a crime and on this occasion the matter you reported to us cannot be classified as a police recorded crime

How can this not be a crime ? I know I didn't part with any money but obviously some people have . It's also clear from the way the wording of text messages changed that it was at least 2 different people messaging me, so as a pp pointed out, it's probably lots of people all sitting in a room doing this

Oh!! That's crazy! It's hard to believe that's true but I guess this won't have been the first time this trip of thing has been reported to them. What about the account where the money was meant to be sent? It seems ridiculous that neither the bank or action fraud want to know. How very depressing

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 18/09/2022 15:18

That is a really shit response from HSBC. They should be taking the details and then raising an incident within their internal departments to investigate that account.

Poor show.

Nocaloriesinchocolate · 18/09/2022 16:15

Ive had it just a couple of hours ago. I hope I would have spotted it was a scam anyway but I knew for sure because adult DS always texts me and DH together, he’d been texting not 2 minutes earlier and if he had in that time smashed his phone (quite likely knowing DS!) I know he was with DIL so she’d Have texted us if need be, I hate these scammers with a passion

Always4Brenner · 18/09/2022 17:16

GretaVanFleet · 18/09/2022 08:12

And I can guarantee that they will. But Action Fraud is who it should be reported to. I work with the team that review all the cases that come in from Action Fraud and where appropriate arrange victim welfare visits as if someone has been targeted they may get further requests. Regards the fraudsters these types of investigations take time, these types of scams are a small part of much bigger organised crime that is going on. Just because someone might not hear from the police after reporting to Action Fraud doesn’t mean nothing happens.

I’ve had my visit so action fraud have been brilliant with me just waiting now to see what happens.

TeenDivided · 25/09/2022 07:00

I've just had this. Apparently my DD smashed her phone (quite possible, she has dyspraxia and her phones do get dropped a lot.) Major giveaway was she spelt 'their' correctly referring to friend and borrowing 'their phone'. Smile

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/09/2022 07:50

I'm still hoping to get one of these. I'm going to ask something like,
"Oh that's awful. Where are you now? Are you still in Vietnam or did you go back to Bangkok?"
I just wonder how they will respond!

MrsLargeEmbodied · 25/09/2022 08:27

thank you @EndTheMonacyNow
i had already blocked but have also now reported

Nsws2015 · 25/09/2022 08:40

I had a lady come to me on customer services when I worked in a supermarket wanting to buy iTunes vouchers but she didn't know what to do. My radar immediately went ping, it's one of the scams we are taught about. So I gently started asking questions about how much and who they were for etc, and she said it was for a friend who had emailed her saying she needed them sending over urgently for a birthday present for a nephew.

I asked if she had spoken to this friend on the phone to confirm that it was her and she said no. I explained about iTunes vouchers being used for scams and how she would lose the money because they ask for the codes and pin to be sent back via that email and if she sent them she would have no comeback etc, she eventually agreed, after insisting that the email was from her friend, to call and check. The poor woman's face dropped when she spoke to her and her friend told her her email had been hacked and she had had numerous calls from friends and family all asking about that email that morning.

I'm just glad she didn't know how to buy the vouchers and came and spoke to me!
