I've just had a WhatsApp message from a number I don't know with my daughters name on it saying she dropped her phone down the loo and is now using this new number . I sent a couple of messages back and got no reply .
I called my daughters original number and she hasn't dropped her phone down the loo !
Has anyone else had this ?

I had this, my only child is 5 😂

It is a well known scam . However my friend got caught by it. Due to her circumstances at the time (working away) she wasn't able to make phone calls to check and just communicated with who she thought was her son through text. She was in a position of stress and didn't give the headspace to check it out that she should have done .

My mother in law nearly fell for this scam recently. Thank goodness she can't do internet banking! She still didn't understand when ringing sister in law the next day on her old number and sil denying that her phone had fallen down the toilet so kept questioning her on if she still needed the £1000!

allboysherebutme · 17/09/2022 22:55

My cousin had this and they asked her for £4000 the dopey cow only transferred it to them 🙈🙈

It does panic you though, poor people that have been caught by this.

The one my friend has referred to 'mum' and she text back saying 'is that you son's name?'

CombatBarbie · 17/09/2022 22:56

My mum got this thinking it was me..... She called my daughter to check thankfully.

What is the scam though please? I had the same and called the phone. Got no answer. Then realised it might be faked and rang DS to discover is was fake. But what does it gain the scammer?

They told my mil, while pretending to be sil that due to new phone they were locked out of their back for 24 hours and have some urgent bills to pay.

My mil would have transferred the money if she was able too! Thankfully she doesn't have internet or telephone banking.

Blimey, how many people just send their kids £1500 if they message saying they have dropped their phone?

I'm happy to be adopted by those generous types!

Vapeyvapevape · 17/09/2022 22:59

They're getting quite persistent, promising they'll pay me back. I said they still owe me for the trainers I paid for .

My mom nearly fell for it we were talking about my sister getting a new phone she said I know she has just sent me her new number how stupid breaking her phone like that! I said?? She has upgraded not broken her phone mom was insisting her phone was broken so I contacted the original number sister responded I told my mom not to send any money it was a good job I did as the request just came through she was appalled normally she was very good scam spotting I said how often does my sister put kisses on things? 🤣 apparently this was a very good point

Sisisisi · 17/09/2022 23:00

Ive discussed this with my DC and we came up with a fanily password .
Any " Hi Mum" texts/ WA and they have to tell me the password .

VladmirsPoutine · 17/09/2022 23:00

I have to admit that I absolutely LOVE wasting their time. I send back messages talking as though I'm talking to my daughter/son and drop in random names of non-existent family like"Did you remember to wish your aunt Mildred a happy birthday?" Grin
Question to those who know someone who was scammed via this route, did the bank reimburse the money without much fuss?

They need to pay for a laptop that they bought but can't because their online banking doesn't work.

Oh I think my mum got this message! By coincidence I rang them just afterwards and she and dad rang were insisting I'd messaged about dropping my phone in the bath. I kept saying I hadn't but they said the message had my name on it. I bet it said "hi mum" I can see how that would look to them (they're both in their seventies). Although they never lend money so the scammers wouldn't have gotten anything out of them!

Deadringer · 17/09/2022 23:03

My brother nearly for this about 2 years ago. His 'daughter' said she had left her phone in a taxi and was using another number, they were texting him back and forth all day, very plausible. Then they texted in an apparent panic that their rent was due but their account was locked (something about their account being on their phone.) He nearly fell for it because it was his dds rent day, and she is always losing her phone, luckily he rang her 'old' number before he transferred over the money.

And the great thing is, while you are wasting their time, they have less time to scam someone else who might not be wise to it. Win/win.

britsabroad · 17/09/2022 23:04

It's a scam. Happened to my mum and the person kept messaging her pretending to me. She got as far as going to the bank to transfer a thousand pounds across for a new phone. I don't know how she fell for it but really shook her up when she realized it was a scam, luckily the bank stopped her transferring the money. I think because I live overseas she freaked out at the thought of not being able to reach me/me being in trouble. The other person messaging didn't even sound like me in the WhatsApp messages sent through and I never ask my mum for money let alone for a large sum like that. For the scammers it will just be a numbers game, message hundreds of people and someone will fall for it

Vapeyvapevape · 17/09/2022 23:04

I've just asked if they managed to get a doctors appointment 🤣

They've sent me bank details with their (scammers) name on it . Would it be worth taking this to the police?

I had this today and initially I responded because my DD is cabin crew and is currently out of the country and unexpectedly delayed. I replied to the initial request to confirm I'd received the text then I texted her number asking if her phone was ok and she just replied yes! I'll ignore any ask for dosh
