Where were you when you found out The Queen had died?

I always found it fascinating when my parents could pinpoint a particular period in time when someone famous passed away. I was young when Princess Diana died and so don't remember anything about it.

When the Queen died, I was at my favourite hotel abroad. My husband told me at dinner.

The hotel had beautiful tributes around the lobby within hours, the theatre had sky news playing on a massive screen and the flags outside were taken down aside from the Union Jack which was flown at half mast.

On my sofa

I would've been at home but I have no idea what I was doing, clearing up after dinner possibly?

I do remember coming downstairs to the news that Lady Diana had died though. I usually have a shocking memory for such things.

In the bath. DH came in to tell me.

At home having spent the afternoon in Windsor Castle seeing the Queens Coronation robes.

We saw the news before we went in that it looked like she was dying. Had a little cry when looking at the exhibition.

zurala · 11/09/2022 20:42

Diana I was in bed just getting up for the day and it was on the radio

With the Queen I was in a caravan on holiday and DH told me as it came through on his phone as breaking news

On my sofa. Logged in to MN and the 5 active chats were all about her.

Whatthetrolley · 11/09/2022 20:44

At the table. Because we were expecting something to be said, at 5pm, 6pm and then06.30pm (by pure fluke) we were switching between Nick Jr and Sky News! At 6.45 my youngest asked if I could record the news to watch later so that he could continue with his programmes!!

DramaAlpaca · 11/09/2022 20:44

In the office, just about to come home. Picked up my phone and saw a WhatsApp message.

namedhange · 11/09/2022 20:45

Putting my kids to bed, something she probably never did 🤣

Bouledeneige · 11/09/2022 20:46

In my car on my way to an evening meeting - I rang DD to tell her and then listened to the radio for the rest of my drive. The meeting was cancelled so I had some food with them and chatted and then drove home.

TortieQueen · 11/09/2022 20:46

At work, exactly the same as I was when Diana died.

Littlemissprosecco · 11/09/2022 20:47

I was working, totally absorbed in a patient, when the national anthem from the background radio flowed over me! I’ll never forget that sinking feeling.

PrimrosesandPears · 11/09/2022 20:47

Diana - my younger sister came into my room to wake me to tell me. She was confused that the cartoons she normally watched weren’t on.

The Queen - my husband came in to tell me immediately after the 6.30 news announcement which he’d been watching live. I was in bed (again!) feeding our baby to try to get him to sleep.

Fluffygreenslippers · 11/09/2022 20:48

I was reading the news all day as they said she was ill. As there was no further announcement I actually though ‘oh maybe she’ll get better.’

I went upstairs, came back down, picked my phone off the charger and saw the notification that she had died. I said ‘oh no’ out loud. The dog and the baby both ignored me. 🤣

mnahmnah · 11/09/2022 20:48

I was at work. I’m a teacher and I was just about to give a presentation to parents. Felt pretty emotional, surprisingly. Not the best presentation I’ve done.

As they were your kids, dear, probably not.

Me too!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/09/2022 20:49

At work, doing a set of observations on a really lovely teenager. I feel really bereft, and I don't really know why!

ShirleyJackson · 11/09/2022 20:50

On a beach in Mexico. I had to do something, so I went up to three women I heard speaking English, and told them. They turned out to be Canadian, and were shocked and full of respect for her. One offered me a drink ‘to drown my sorrows’, which was sweet, although I declined.
