Where were you when you found out The Queen had died?

I always found it fascinating when my parents could pinpoint a particular period in time when someone famous passed away. I was young when Princess Diana died and so don't remember anything about it.

When the Queen died, I was at my favourite hotel abroad. My husband told me at dinner.

The hotel had beautiful tributes around the lobby within hours, the theatre had sky news playing on a massive screen and the flags outside were taken down aside from the Union Jack which was flown at half mast.

On holiday abroad in a restaurant though we had guessed hours previously that she was on her way out.

TraceyGerbil · 11/09/2022 20:51

I was on the Elizabeth line from Heathrow to go and see my Mum in hospital.

PeterPomegranate · 11/09/2022 20:51

On the toilet checking my phone. Bet I wasn’t the only one. Might need to adjust the memory for posterity though.

Eminybob · 11/09/2022 20:51

On the sofa. Kids were watching kids telly so it came through on my phone.

With Diana, I was 17 had stayed at my boyfriends. He went downstairs to cook breakfast and came up saying to turn the telly on as something important had happened (he had just caught snippets) then we lay in bed all day watching the news on his tiny portable.

BettyOBarley · 11/09/2022 20:51

Upstairs bathing the kids, DH got a text, although it wasn't a surprise as we'd been watching the news a few mins before and it was obvious it was coming any moment.

itsgettingweird · 11/09/2022 20:52

In exactly the same building about 3m away from where I was when my mum died earlier this year.

It took my breath away.

LeftNotRight · 11/09/2022 20:53

Sat on the sofa. It was such a horrible feeling when it was announced.

chipshopElvis · 11/09/2022 20:53

On the sofa, waiting for them to announce that the Queen had died...

Namechangedforspooky · 11/09/2022 20:55

Came in from the school run at about 3.20 and found grandparents watching tv. I said with absolute certainty ‘she’s dead’.
Then about 10 minutes later the black ties came out and we knew we were waiting for an announcement at 6ish as all programmes were on hold until then

mrsDracoMalfoy · 11/09/2022 20:56

Diana, I was a child at home, I turned the tv on to Nickelodeon, there was a message at the bottom
Please turn to the news channel for an important announcement- called my mum to see, turned it over and her death was all over the news.
I didn't really know much about the Royal Family until then.

Prince Philip - was watching THIS MORNING when it suddenly cut to the news.

The Queen - was actually watching the news.

Bonjovispjs · 11/09/2022 20:56

At work, wiping the pooey bum of the kid I'm a nanny for 😆

fernz · 11/09/2022 20:57

Watching TV at home. I happened to be watching BBC News when the news first came through earlier in the day about her being under medical supervision so I was looking for an update.

tellyiscrap · 11/09/2022 20:59

I was at work . Nurse in Cat B prison - watching a man on camera regurgitating razor blades in our segregation unit . 5 of us listening to radio - eyes on camera .

stargirl1701 · 11/09/2022 20:59

At a Cub Scout meeting with my daughter. I was on the parent rota for Thursday evening. They opened the meeting promising to do their duty to The Queen and then closed it promising to do their duty to The King.

I was quite emotional.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 11/09/2022 20:59

Having a kip on the couch. 🤣.
My DD phoned me and told me.

upinaballoon · 11/09/2022 21:00

I was on a trip out so hadn't heard any TV or radio news bulletins. The coach driver said he had to tell us something. I thought he'd run out of petrol or we'd got to go miles further round because a road was blocked somewhere, but that wasn't it.

lomoko · 11/09/2022 21:03

I was at work attending a large event. A junior staff member came running up to me and begged me to announce it for them. They said "we don't know what to do!" and I said "no one knows what to do!!" but on reflection, I guess I did somehow know.

I gathered everyone together and said The Queen is dead. Long live the King. Then we held a minute's silence together. Then we carried on.

mrsfeatherbottom · 11/09/2022 21:03

At the dinner table, DH's notifications on his phone started going off and we guessed why.

Diana, it was more interesting. I had been living in Paris for a year and was leaving on a very early morning flight to return home. We were on the runway at 7am (a friend drove me to the airport and turns out we passed quite near to the hospital but we're unaware) and the pilot announced it. I got to Heathrow and people were starting to talk about but the papers hadn't got the news in time so not everyone knew. Connecting flight to Belfast and by the time I got there, it was all over the news and the world went a tiny bit mad!

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 11/09/2022 21:05

At the lake.

I had heard the news that her Drs were attending her & were worried about her health, around mid day I suppose, then saw the notes being passed around in Parliament. I knew then. When 6pm came & went I thought/hoped that maybe I was wrong. By 6:30 I was down at the lake & heard it on the radio, then.

PP I was just at home, expecting the news.

Diana I was overseas & turned the Tv on & it was all over the news. I was so very upset, thinking if the boys.

the only other person (not family) that I remember where I was when I heard the news was Freddie Mercury. I was driving & I remember exactly where I was.

weird really as there are other peoples whose deaths upset me much more than his, but I don't remember where I was.

TwoBlondes · 11/09/2022 21:07

In a bar in my tiny French village. I was with a few Brits and the French people at the next table told us, they were genuinely upset. I came home to a condolence email from an acquaintance. For republicans, they appear remarkably traumatised. I feel I need to apologise for not being sad enough 🤷‍♀️

Chicheguevara · 11/09/2022 21:07

At home. I just looked at the news online and saw the breaking news at 6.30.

Sodie · 11/09/2022 21:08

Having a poo!!

Me too! And I'm a regular as clockwork morning poo-er normally.

Berlinlover · 11/09/2022 21:10

Sitting on my couch watching Sky News.

SallyWD · 11/09/2022 21:11

Out for a walk with my daughter. I strongly suspected she'd died already but my husband dismissed the idea. When we were out he texted to say "You were right"
