If you meet up with someone for a coffee, how long do you usually spend with them?

For various reasons I’ve been unable to do much socially for a good few years, but due to a new work role that is changing again now and I feel like I’ve forgotten how to mix!

Confidence has gone a bit, and I’m finding I can’t judge how long to spend when someone has asked to meet up. I keep coming away paranoid that they feel I’ve rushed it and not given them enough time, or spent too long chatting and bored them to death!

If you ask someone to meet for a coffee or a drink, how long would you consider a reasonable/pleasant amount of time to spend? I feel like I just need a vague yardstick!

About 45 minutes to an hour.

Roxie99 · 11/09/2022 20:26

1 hour

Rainbowshit · 11/09/2022 20:26

An hour ish. Hour and a half max.

About 45 minutes to an hour.

Snap! Was just about to write that.

FourEyesGood · 11/09/2022 20:26

Around an hour. If either of has travelled any sort of distance, I suppose a bit longer.

Mrsbclinton · 11/09/2022 20:26

About an hour

carefullycourageous · 11/09/2022 20:27

1-2 hours for me, but 'coffee' actually means 'a massive chat' as I tend to have big gaps between seeing people.

HipsterCoffeeShop · 11/09/2022 20:27

An hour to an hour and a half for coffee

For a drink could be half an hour could be all day and night and crawl home at 3am 😅

Kdub · 11/09/2022 20:27

1 to 1.5 hours

CatLadyDrinksGin · 11/09/2022 20:27

An hour ish. Prob two coffees, maybe cake if just coffee. If lunch an hour to an hour and a half.

HippeePrincess · 11/09/2022 20:29

Could be a quick 45mins but could be a few hours

Vallmo47 · 11/09/2022 20:29

I always gauge the other person’s coffee cup to be completely honest so if they’re nearly done I want to be at a similar level with mine. Once the coffee is over and no one has suggested another one I’m usually like “Right, it was lush to catch up but gotta go…” 😂 😂 I love a fellow over thinker OP!

Veryverycalmnow · 11/09/2022 20:30

Actually sitting and drinking coffee, probably an hour. Pottering around shops afterwards together adds another half hour to an hour for me.

pickledpotato · 11/09/2022 20:31

Depends who it is

But most of the time it's a couple of hours

Sometimes more

Isonthecase · 11/09/2022 20:32

About an hour maybe, longer if there's cake. I've done more like 3 hours before if we're having a good chat but obviously by then we're past just the one coffee 🤣

Geeksassemble · 11/09/2022 20:34

So so helpful! One hour is usually my “oh damn I hope they didn’t think I couldn’t be arsed with them any longer?” thought train so I’m relieved that seems to be generally considered fine..!

1.5 hours max

Arenanewbie · 11/09/2022 20:36

I would say closer to 2 hours then to 1. However I meet people very rarely so there is a big gap in between. Also it depends on circumstances: meet up, walking to the place, coffee, walking back - usually closer to 2 hours. Meet up at coffee shop, coffee and good buy - 1 hour, maybe a bit more.
If it’s 45 minutes - 1 hour , I would appreciate knowing in advance so my friend will usually txt me: we can meet up on Thursday at 2 pm for coffee but I will need to leave at 2.50 for school run. Then I will answer her : yes, it’s fine or shall do the week after then.

Solidarity!! I overthink most things but the length of time it should be taking me to drink coffee is a new low, even by my standards… 😂😩

Normally a couple of hours. But then I've got young kids and so do most of my friends, so if we've made it out with no kids or just a baby then we tend to make the most of it 🤣

Letsdancedavidbowie · 11/09/2022 20:39

Around an hour, I'm so glad to see other people saying the same! I thought i was just weird, i get tired after an hour as an introvert

CuteCillian · 11/09/2022 20:39

Two and a half hours, which is 2 coffees and a peppermint tea (and a pastry obviously).

Sparklingbrook · 11/09/2022 20:40

1-2 hours and always includes multiple coffees. If the conversation is flowing though, can be longer.

Pinkandpurplehairedlady · 11/09/2022 20:40

Another one that says an hour - after that I run out of things to talk about!

zurala · 11/09/2022 20:40

60-90 minutes usually, but longer if we are both chatting a lot. I find an hour is usually a bit short but might be all the time available.
