M&S statement re The Queen

nachoavocado · 09/09/2022 13:19

I find it really odd that M&S have chosen to email me a statement about the Queen. Everywhere else just seems to be putting it on their website. It's not saying their shops are closed or anything. It just seems a strange thing to do. Is that just me?

Oh my fucking god.

It’s shocking.

I am wondering if they couldn’t just put the banner up and have the drop down menus only as websites are designed a certain way.

NotYourOscarSpeech · 09/09/2022 14:32

I’ve had two - I’m not on loads of mailing lists as I periodically unsubscribe, but I got one from Trotters (childrenswear) at about 9pm which seemed very odd to me, and one from Selfridges at 10:30pm also saying they were closing until Saturday.

Performative for sure.

See the Selfridges one again I can understand, they are letting you know they are closed. I got one from feel unique which just had pictures and a tribute to the Queen.

I've had one from the Chair of the Royal Horticultural Society, of which I'm a member. But like a pp mentions about the Royal British Legion, she was their Patron.

Rapidtango · 09/09/2022 13:44

The only one I've received was from the RSPB - the Queen was their patron, they're not trying to shill bird seed or binoculars so I think it's in keeping, but businesses as above - cynical marketing ploy only fit for deletion.

Same.

fruitbrewhaha · 09/09/2022 14:43

Its really grating on me. You cant do anything now without someone sycophantically saying "RIP Ma'am" etc Facebook is full of it.

You're not wrong.

I had one from Community Clothing (Patrick Grant) unfortunately it was white writing on a black background and I couldn't read it.

londonmummy1966 · 09/09/2022 15:05

I've had loads and it is irritating. The only one that had any point at all was the Royal School of Church Music which included a link to resources for those wanting help with planning Sunday's service which is actually very useful.

ifonly4 · 09/09/2022 15:11

No one obviously likes me or wants my trade, I've not had one email in last 24 hours referring to the Queen, including M&S.

Stay off social media for the next couple of weeks then. Problem solved.

PooWeeBum · 09/09/2022 15:19

The oddest one I got was from Hush, as in the clothing brand

vroom321 · 09/09/2022 15:20

I got one yesterday tea time from the entertainer toy shop. It said all their stores would be closed today.

Yes that sounds useful

I had one from Community Clothing and eyerolled.

Veeragall · 09/09/2022 15:23

I've had them from several companies and organisations. We haven't had a monarch die for 70 years. If you don't want to read it just delete it.

I am. I just find the concept really odd. Facebook posts, Instagram sure. But sending me an email? Nah just seems weird.

Now I'm curious. I'm pretty diligent about avoiding/unsubscribing from marketing email lists and haven't had any (yet).

Can anyone post examples of what they've received so I can judge the senders?

ThickCutSteakChips · 09/09/2022 13:26

Have you seen the Ann Summers website?!

Lordy. Her picture on the same page as the toys!😳
Well it could have been worse, they haven't got the models in union jack undies. Yet.

Cheeselog · 09/09/2022 15:37

I had emails from Selfridges and Molton Brown as well. Both of them have closed their stores today so it makes a bit more sense that they are emailing people though tbf.

It’s stealth marketing

This. Is in poor taste I feel.

The only email I’ve had on it so far was to assure me that an event tomorrow is not cancelled, which makes sense to me.

I remember Waitrose doing this when Prince Phillip died - must go and see if they've done it again.

But they held her Royal Warrant, so I see the connection. I don't think M&S hold a warrant though. So I guess they simply think it's something that goes down well with their core customers

I thought they supplied the royal household with something or other either currently or in the past.
Whether that was clothing or oranges.

I unsubscribed from all their emails after receiving it- I did read it as hair loss

KINDNESS, COMPASSION AND TOLERANCE - A LETTER FROM PATRICK GRANT, OUR FOUNDER.

We are deeply saddened by the death of her Majesty The Queen.
She had an endless capacity for kindness, compassion and tolerance. She provided an unwavering moral and spiritual example in a society which increasingly needs one. She was goodness personified.
Intolerance diminishes us. As many in positions of power seek to create divisions, Her Majesty sought always to encourage us to live graciously. She was a wonderful reminder to us all that we might be happier and live more peacefully were we to be supportive of all. Whatever her judgements, she never gave them public voice.
Her loss will be very greatly felt.
Patrick Grant,
Founder of Community Clothing.

The only 1 I have not unsubscribed from was one with a royal warrant.

UWhatNow my local ish M&S has a formidable woman supervising the changing rooms. I asked her once about her stance on men in the women's changing rooms. Her reply suggested that any man trying it on would be grateful to leave the shop with his genitals intact. She did admit that her policy and company policy were not completely aligned 😂

Good woman. We need more like her.

HandbagsnGladrags · 09/09/2022 16:16

I've had emails saying 'we're pausing marketing out of respect' - you don't need to fucking email and tell me that, do you!
